Is 20W50 enough?

Just curious if anyone has any other suggestions for fluids for modern sporty's. sometimes I feel like 20w50 isnt enough... And whats the Harley Primary? like 80W?

Thanks.

Just curious what makes you think 20w50 isn't cutting it? I don't believe I've heard of anyone using anything heavier than that.

In a modern sporty the primary and tranny share fluid, which is a fluid harley calls "formula +" close to 20w50 (if you buy certain synthetic motorcycle oils they can be used in the primary/tranny. Harley, Mobil 1, royal purple all recommend their synthetic 20w50 for that use as well).

I know a lot of guys use 60 wt in the ironhead sportsters keep in mind that thicker oil doesn't always mean better. If it can't get into the little nooks and cranies it isn't lubing.

I put 75w90 gear oil in my 04 primary/tranny once...ran it for about 1500 miles...made it a bit louder...decided to stop fixing what isn't broken and went back to what was recomended 20w50 primary/tranny fluid.

Never had a problem with 20w50 in the motor.

The Formula+ is garbage though. Made my tranny annoyingly loud. I switched to 20w50 in the primary/tranny and its a lot quieter and the clutch doesn't chatter when putting it into gear when cold.

Any suggested brands for 20W50? I got some of the spectre stuff from Lowbrow... its nice I guess...

I met a guy that was adding Lucas Oil additive (its as thick as honey) to his oil bag.

Sounded insane to me.

I have never heard a complaint about using Formula+ in the primary of an Evo Sporty. I work in a shop and I am pretty sure when a customer has something to complain about, I hear it. Never heard it about Formula+ though.

I've got an Ironhead, and I've been running 60wt valvoline vr1 in both engine and primary for about a year, I made the switch to Kendall 70wt, and I'm very happy with it. Rode like a dream. Leaks a whole lot less too, but I did dress up my drain bolts as well. After a little bit the bike would turn 60wt into water. I get's 100+ here regularly
