Seized rear axle

Has anyone ever when to remove their rear tire to find the axle will not move. Does anyone have any trick to getting this axle to budge.

According to your other post you've already ruined the axle. At this point I'd recommend a lot of penetrating oil and let it sit for a while. You will need to beat the hell out of it to break it free and when you do you will need to cut the mushroomed part off the axle before it goes through the wheel hub. Something id definitely wrong, the axle should come out rather easily. If you seized a wheel bearing you may end up needing a whole new wheel. Good luck.

It's not uncommon for Sportster rear axles to seize. When you install your new axle, grease the entire length of it. Next time, if you have to drive it out, use a drift in the center of the axle to avoid damaging it.

I usually use a block of wood and a hammer to break it loose if it is giving me too much trouble.
But after that the axle usually twists out with a lil finesse.

Be sure and use lube before you stick it in.

My axle was stuck when I attempted to take it out this spring on my GS750. I don't know about HD axles but jap axles have a hole going down through the axle end, I took a slide hammer like so...

Took a piece of an old broken screw driver, bent it into a "L" shape and welded it to a nut that fit on the end of the slide hammer. Then proceeded to beat on it until it came out. Once it started to move it came out fairly easily.

When you finally get it out use this when you replace it.....

After that headache I will not forget again.

Thanks for the help I am going to give it a few move hit with a wood black and hammer and see if see moves. Also good call on cutting the mushroomed metal off.

I use a sawsall to remove siezed axles. It requires a little surgical precision to saw through the spacers and the axle without ruining the wheel or the caliper bracket.

Sawsall cures all, I may have to break it out.
