kawasaki ninja chopper update

I started building this bike for the 2010 dirtbag challenge in SF. A buddy of mine had this zx6r sitting in his side yard...he was a little scared of it and offerred it to me for free!! . I had a machinest friend make a new neck then I used conduit to figure out how I wanted the frame...then 1 1/8" DOM tubing was bent in a elcheapo harbor freight pipe bender. I made the axle plates from some fat scrap plate. The real gas tank is the big black box under the seat...it holds about 4 1/2 gallons. The harley tank was widened and stretched to fit over the modified stock airbox (I still had to cut the top od the airbox off and fiberglass the hole)
I made the bars and used the clip-on brackets to hold them in place..built the running boards from scrap diamondplate. All in I am right around $1000...and I just got in from my first ride on it....damn fast and fun...gotta get used to the wide frame and running boards (never had a bike with boards before) Anyway..here's a little video of it if I do it right! I am still going to pull the tins for real paint and to clean up the wiring.....someday!haha

Works for me. That's pretty wild. You get kind of used to a certain engine sound coming from choppers/bobbers. That high-rpm sport bike sound will have people doing a double take.

That's pretty ridiculous. I've seen sportbike choppers but never one that went that far to look like a cruiser/ chopper. The best one I saw was just hardtailed with a sporty tank and solo seat. Is it possible to get the engine out now that you made that frame cage, or is it in there forever?

If this was a mastercard ad (And you'd charged the $1k to your Mastercard)
the tag line would be:

"Bike Nites...Priceless"

btw, how did it do in the Dirtbag?

It's just...so strange. Maybe I could wrap my head around it if it was more stripped down without those mungungous fenders on it and such but, it just boggles my mind.

Props to you for doing it, putting in the fab work and seeing it through though. Good work. Still boggles my mind though.

I've put katana engines in other frames, know what ya mean about the "damn fast" and the high revs definitely has people doing the double take, but I have not gone thru the trouble of making the whole bike look like something else, would be nice to get some good side profile shots from a little further away to get a good look at it. Props to you and the work you put into it.

Thanks guys...I've been blasting it around for a week now and it is running great...I can take my hands off the bars on the freeway and it tracks straight, the long floorboards leave plenty of different riding positions and the big harley seat is pretty comfy.
I never got to the dirtbag with it as I just never got it running in time (1 month to build a bike goes too damn fast!)
I built the frame so that the engine will still come out quite easilly (in case I blow something up!)
I love the way people looking at it can't figure out the gas tank situation as the HD tanks are just spot welded and tacked with lots of gaps still (real tank is under the seat and holds 4 1/2 gallons) All in all I would do it again...still in it under a grand and it's the fastest bike I've ever owned.

Heh. That's pretty slick. I like it. That sound probably screws with people big time. So who gives you more grief, cruiser dudes or crotch rocket jockeys?
