Ill tell ya this, when i got my bike, the PO had welded the oil tank on solid across the upper rear cross member, I rode the bike 1 time, for a total of less than 1 mile, I got home whacked it twice with a 2lb shop hammer and it popped right off. Triumphs (any bike, especially if its a hardtail) is going to have a lot of vibrations, and can easily wreak havoc on oil tank (and other) mounts. One way to help reduce vibrations is to use rubber, or springs ,or both , in the mountings. I assume your going to just use hard mount bungs, which if you are, 4 would be best. (better safe than sorry) I have heard stories of guys oil tank mounting bungs shearing off (breaking). Now with all that being said, my stock '69 Triumph oil tank has 3 mounting points, 2 (rubber bushing type mounts) at the top, and one at the bottom that locks it in ,and keeps it from swinging into the rear tire. I do see a lot of bikes with only 2 mounting bungs, I've also seen a good few with 4. I think for a vertical application 4 would be rather easy to accomplish, horizontal position may prove a bit more challenging. Though I am strongly considering an extremely custom oil tank, it isn't going to be round, and it will have 4 mounting points.
