KZ issues from a noob.

Getting somewhat close to finishing this up just in time to ride it this summer. Pretty excited.

80 KZ750 Twin
Electronic ignition off KZ440
Keihin 34mm carbs, 140 mains
Bare bones harness made myself.

Got it started for the first time this weekend. It will idle, but not happily. The RH exhuast pipe has a nice, even, strong exhaust pulse coming out. The LH side is intermittent, and the pipe didnt warm up untill I revved it. It doesnt rev too good either, and occasionaly backfires. Its sort of hard to hear here, but at least its something.

Also, when I turned the key off after this video, the bike keeps running. I then took the battery out (i have a small quick disconnect battery) and it still kept on running. I finally turned off the gas and had to sit and let it run out of gas before it would shut off.

Any clues on this one?

check for vacuum leaks, i had the same thing going on with my kz twin. that cylinder is not getting fuel. the right boot holding the carb to the head was loose. take some brake clean and spray around the boots and the carbs. If the engine reacts to it you know you have a leak some where. Start there 1st and let me know.

I think your wiring harness may be a bit too bare bones. The stator for the engine is generating it's own electricity and keeping the sparks firing. You must have pulled the engine cutoff switch out the harness when you stripped it down. Easy fix: Take the ground wire coming out of your coils and route it through the ignition switch so you break the circuit when the ignition is cut off. No current through the coils, no spark. No spark, no go.

A lot of folks here are all about 'bare bars' with no switches or buttons. While I acknowledge the cool factor of bare bars, having an engine cutoff switch within thumbs reach when your clutch cable breaks could be the difference between living and dying.

Not preachin', just sayin'.

Here is the diagram I made the harness off of.

Looks to me like the coil is grounded through the ignitor, so my problem would be with the blk/yellow wire out of the ignitor? Its weird that it worked fine one day and then not the next.

Just a little info you might not know:

Once the engine is running, the battery isn't supplying any power. It's all coming from the stator. Unless the stator isn't working, that is. Then you'll run off the battery.

Does the 440 match up okay? that seems to me to be a issue going from a 440 to a 750, although I have no kzs, even if i did, that would not mean I would know anyways!

Swinewerx - The 440 and the late 750s used the same electronic ignition as far as I know, its a pretty common swap over on kzrider.com.

Demoto - I'll have to give that a try.

Cros36 - That must have been it. I pulled the carbs again, cleaned them as throughly as I know how, adjusted the floats, and reinstalled. It was still doing it at first, but I let it run for a few minutes and it mustve worked its way out. Its firing hard on both sides now.
