How does this scam work?

ok I know its a scam ........but how does it work?

I have my 06 XL 883 for sale on craigslist , so I got this email saying

" Thank for the prompt response to my inquiry? Am very interested in
buying your item and i will like to buy this item now reason is that i
want to buy it for my company and So i want to be the best offer by
adding $100 to your money then keep other offers off and provide me
your paypal email so that i can make the payment asap for the item and
if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to
www.paypal.com and get it set up , after you have set it up i will
only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so
as to put the money through.I have a pick up agent that will come and
pick the item up after i have made the payment.

Thanks

So if he is paying via paypal ...isnt paypal supposedly secure? And I've never heard of anybody throwing 5k around on paypal.

I mean no way am I falling for this but just curious how 's it work?

They use your email address to log into your paypal account. Password? A simple program can find your password fairly quickly. Then they transfer from your paypal to theirs. Easy money

Is there a PayPal link provided in his email to you? If so, it's probably a fake PayPal page that he created to look like the real one. He gets your info when you click on the link in his email and log into it.

Highly unlikely he will use a program to try to get your password. More thank likely he will send you a fake paypal link and grab your login and email that way. Paypal has a cool feature that uses a credit card sized number generator to login. I have it and it's awesome. Got it after someone broke into my paypal and bought a computer. No idea how they did that, as I worked for Bank of America and am pretty hip to most scams.
