A quick question for you, I have a 73 head I'm planning on using. It has those ugly cast alloy, chunky intakes. Any reason I couldn't replace them with the cool ribbed ones? I'd have to add the balance tube right?

yes and no. the distance from the carb to the head in respect to the exhaust flow greatly affects the power the engine makes.
by reducing that distance you will reduce the magic rpm that all the torque curves cross each other.
the 1.75 diameter pipes make power at a real high rpm and the shorter intakes make power at a lower rpm. if you want to go with the shorter intakes it will work but Triumph was trying to make more power with those longer 73 manifolds.
and the balance tube helps but is not mandatory. my manifolds have a balance tube added in but most Mikuni manifolds don't have any.
check to see if the carbs will even clear the rocker boxes without the stock manifolds, that may decide it for you.
