Default St. Pat's Day in NYC...

    ...who's going?

My ol' lady and the kids want to see the parade so I'm cagin' it. My Mom's Pop is from Ireland, my Pop is from Mexico (hence the name...Huero) so I think all good Irishmen need to go at least once to the biggest St. Pat's gathering in America, right?

When I lived in West Cork in '95, all I did for St. Patrick's day was milk the cows as usual and go to Mass. I didn't even wear green.

Gonna be a different St. Patrick's day for me tomorrow, my daughter is the flower girl in my cousin's lesbian wedding. should be interesting.

I don't think I even own any green clothing. Maybe a tee-shirt from the '90's.

Explain. Is it the holiday, the parade itself, NYC on St Patricks day? What is it that perturbs you?

Hey bud that's great. I'm glad you're coming into the city. I'm working tomorrow but it's OK because the job site is 45 Rockefeller center which is right across the street from St. Pat's cathedral, so we'll be looking out the window at the parade in the morning. Look for me, I'll be the one in the green shirt.

Firstly I am Irish and Puerto Rican, Now being in construction here for almost 20 years I have met LOADS of "Good Irishmen" from many different counties and from my experience many of them will hate American Irish feeling that we are not Irish at all but "narrowbacks" meaning that we are not as manly as they are having a narrower back and shoulders more like women than men.

One of the more interesting things I've learned is that they don't eat corned beef on St. Pats they will usually eat ham instead. Corned beef started with the poor immigrants who came to NY and didn't have money for better cuts of meat. So basically St. Pats is more an American Irish holiday than those from the isle.

Now that being said, sure it's amateur hour out there and every weekend warrior is out drinking during the day but so fucking what?? It's a fun tradition if nothing else. Throw some green on drink a little too much and eat some corned beef. Whats the big fucking deal? These people are making it sound like a fucking war zone here

People need to relax a bit and enjoy life a little more. I've heard this through the years with some Irish being too cool to celebrate with us but fuck them then enjoy the misery boys.

Huero It's a good time for the most part man. It really is. Enjoy your day out with the family. If you were alone I'd say lets go have a drink bud. Next time

It annoys me to no end when the Irish nationals get all bitch at us Americans for doing St Pats like we do. I'd say the majority I've met will celebrate and have a good time but some do stick their noses up at the very thought of somehow lowering themselves and putting a green shirt on.

    Now for you...

"We"? Who the fuck is "We"? Do you know every "good Irishman" in the entire world? In NYC? No? That's right I don't fucking know you, so stop speaking for the rest of us, we didn't vote you the fucking little green spokesman so lighten the fuck up and enjoy just another day if it means nothing to you. It's pretty enjoyable here. It's a time for family and friends to get together, maybe go to church, eat and drink together. whats the big fucking deal?

I don't give a fuck what day it is, when people get together for good times to have a few and laugh together that's a GREAT DAY no matter what the reason and we ALL need more of them for fuck's sake.

Being my first year on the East Coast this parade is definitely a novelty thing for St Pats Day and my fam. Both my ol lady and I are from Hispanic (Mexican) neighborhoods in L.A. so we weren't exposed to all the new Irish-American shit that goes on, but I like my kids to see diversity and pay a little homage to their Great Abuelito from Ireland.

Will have to throw a beer back sooner or later, Homie, just trying to piece another bike together for this riding season!

I heard that parade is ridiculous!! Heard the city has to shut the streets down for hours for it, even if it falls during the work week.

    "Patrick" wasn't Irish.

    "Catholicism" wasn't Irish.

There's nothing "Irish" about the alleged reasons for "St. Patrick's Day".

The reason it's "a fucking sham the world over" is probably a bit of a personal opinion but hey, like clitosises, every cunt's got one.

Ireland is in a serious fucking mess, financially, economically and every other way possible. At a time when the Irish People need their government to nut-up and make a fucking stand, most of it's members are in other countries around the world, "spending Irish taxpayers' money" at Paddy's day celebrations in other fucking countries. Fine - it's a "tradition" that the Irish Taoíseach (prime minister) attends the celebrations in America BUT what's to stop the ginger bastard from saying "thanks for the invite but I feel it'd be a bit like giving the Irish People yet ANOTHER slap in the face and a cock up their arse for me to go swanning around the world, spending money that could be much better used in our own economy..."

    But that's never gonna happen.

    Now... this tool.

    Hey, fuckstick. One question.

    Where were you born?

Dude, I got no problem with people enjoying themselves and having fun. Being with family, eating well, drinking in comfort - if so wished... All fine. But like you said yourself - "I don't give a fuck what day it is..." only in my mind, I don't NEED a particular date (or dates) during the year to do shit like that. If I want to spend time with my family, I will - any day of the year. St. Patrick's day being a day to celebrate "being Irish"...? As said above - he's got FUCK ALL to do with "being Irish" - FACT.

As for me responding with "No we don't"... I was speaking as an Irish person. Born in Ireland to parents that were also born in Ireland to grandparents that were ALSO born in Ireland, etc. etc.

There's a guy with almost the same name as me in Boise, Idaho who's traced his family heritage back to Devonshire (that's in England) in 1258 CE (or AD if you buy into Catholicism). Going by HIS research, I could probably claim to be of English heritage - opening myself up to all sorts of Anglo-Saxon/Norman possible bloodlines.

    But I don't.

I was born in Ireland - that makes me Irish. Not because my "mom's father was Irish" or "my dad's great uncle used to own an Irish Red Setter...".

Call me cynical but, being Irish, I (and a Helluva lotta people I know and am aware of) don't give much of a snake's ass about "Saint Fuckin' Patrick's Day" and all the crap that goes with it.

So take you and your "Wooooohh!! I'm Irish" bandwagon and go fuck yourself.

If you and the many other Americans searching for some sort of "heritage" spent that time and effort into BEING American, then I feel you truly WOULD have a United States of America, not the Miscellaneous States that exists today.

"African-American"??? Fucking BLACK or COLOURED. Not all black people are descended from Africa - that's just condescending and, to some of them; insulting. In fact... What race do I belong to?? The HUMAN fucking race - nothing to do with colour, creed or attempts to be "politically correct" and pacify specific "areas of the community". "Community" my arse!! It's about as segregated and divided as the aisles in a supermarket. That's the fucking problem.

Oh you fucking wait till I get home. I'm not gonna type this shiyt out on my phone.

Patrick could have been irish. They're not sure. He was a Briton, but historians generally believe he was either was a celt or scot. Still it's irrelevant though because It's a traddition and if you're too fucking cool to play along and have a good time, fuck you then.

I'm not on any bandwagon and I certainly don't go "woooh I'm irish" My point is dont piss on others if they do want to be and don't speak for everyone like you are the deciding vote simply because you were born somewhere else like you're superior in some way. Climb down off your high horse and don't judge the irish that you don't consider irish. Seriously man who the fuck do you think you are?

So you're effectively saying because of where I was was born I'm not allowed to have heritage because YOU fucking say so? There you go again with speaking about the "Way it is for the Irish" you're one asshole and yet you think you speak for a nation eh. Some ego you have there. Oh you wait till I get home.

So in my hungover state I'm realizing that I could give two fucks about your asshole opinion about pretty much everything. As I mentioned I have run into tons of Irish nationals who don't feel that we are Irish as well and have dealt with your kind of bigotry for years here, I have lost jobs because of it and have had many many arguments as well. Your self indulgent ideas of race and nationality are just that.

Your "too cool for school" attitude is just lame and ignorant and honestly I feel bad for you having to dissect the holiday many have come to love. No matter the reason for the day it's alot of fun and you're missing out here, not me and the millions who do choose to participate and proudly call ourselves Irish regardless of your opinion

Not only are you a self proclaimed expert on what being Irish means, but what being a United States American means too now??? You seem intelligent enough that I would think you see the hypocrisy and arrogance here no?

I lack the energy to get into your "Miscellaneous States that exists today" comment I'll just simply say fuck you and be done with it. To question my patriotism is again just ignorant as you don't know me from Adam.

To sum up, you're a sad person and I do feel bad for you. I'm not going to waste my time trying to talk sense to you as you're probably stuck in your ignorant ways for far too long.

    You're an asshole, bye now
