Default Today's lack of ingenuity and uber reliance on the internet

Ya know, ever since the dawn of the internet, a lot of people are slowly losing their ability to THINK of the answer to a problem. It is so easy to run to the internet and ask how to do it than to figure out how to do it yourself.
Too many people don't sit down, crack open a beer and figure out a way to get past whatever issue they are having. Thats how you learn people! Trial and error! So what if you break something along the way, use that knowledge to help you the next time!
And then there is the constant request for pictures of bikes with so and so parts on them in just such a configuration. Where is the fun in that? Half the fun of building these bikes is seeing them in your head, just so, and then building them to look like that. Yeah, sometimes they end up looking awful and you wind up selling or trading off the parts you just bought. Oh well, at least you tried!
Use your own imagination, not other people's! Its so much more fun that way!

True. Back in the day the only access to a bike, car or music, clothing was briefly in real life, magazine, or in TV/movie, radio only. In my opinion, that short glimpse resulted in a solid "sense memory" which in turn would trigger imagination. Now with the internet, every picture/info is at our disposal for total saturation and consumption. Now we overthink, emulate, and co-op style structures instead of internalizing sense memory through imagination. Pity our fugitive imaginations!.....uhoh gotta go Sons of Anarchy is starting. haha

I agree, but I'm guilty of it too.

Though I agree that some degree of thinking has been replaced with the "google search", I don't believe its entirely a bad thing. Its just another resource, and without resources like this one right here (chopcult and other forums) I don't think I would've ever gotten my first bike together.

I mean think about how you would've done it a few years back, before we had the internet. I mean if it were me, and I had no internet, I'd probably start with the manual, then some other books on how shit works, then maybe try to find some people to help me out, find some guys that know what they're talking about to teach me something about whatever I was having trouble with.

With the internet, all these same resources, including the friends, experts, etc. are all there, just easier to find now. I know where you're coming from though, things just aren't the same when they come easy, but the internet allows people like me to understand concepts that would've taken years learning by trial and error on my own, in just a few short months.

I spent my whole childhood taking shit apart to see “how’s this work” or “what’s inside there?” My parents were pissed off till I was in my teens and able to put the shit back together that I disassembled. I was a pain in the ass down at the local MC shop asking Marv how to do this, or “will this bolt to that?“ Monthly I’d take the money that I earned mowing lawns and buy the latest Cycle or Motocross action and read them cover-to-cover till they were burned into my memory. I’d squirrel away my Pop’s Street Chopper, Hot Rod, and Truckin’ mags and dream of the day I would have something I had fixed up cool. I was “all ears” when ever his riding buddies stopped by to benchrace and stealing his tools to wrench on my dirtbikes much to his chagrin! I don’t think things have changed at all. Just the way we exchange ideas and trends. Sure the way we collect all this info has sped up but this hasn’t stopped people from thinking. Just the opposite dudes realize that it’s not all that hard to make something from nothing or mash it up and make it unique and personal. I’ve spent 20 years in many machine shops and can’t stand the attitude of “I learned by fucking it up so your going to learn by fucking it up!” Today I am the machinist and fabricator that I am because of the few tradesmen that answered my dumb questions and showed me the “tricks of the trade.” For that I’m forever grateful and I own it to those old cats to pass on the knowledge!

Not everyone grew up around people who could build, fix or even liked motorcycles/cars so finding information elsewhere was a must. I belive even the most creative of people need to find a muse somewhere.

A mentor, a library or the internet, It's the same deal in my book.

I've spent plenty of time with trail and error. Still do and when I get a chance to soothe the headache I will use any resource possible. Using the internet isn't the path of success every time. Big difference in knowing what to do and doing it.

Now the picture threads get on my nerves too when they are of the "Lets see your flake helmet and your pet together!" persuasion.

when i started buidling my shovelhead it was with my dad and brother.his old biker buddies thought that you had to learn everything the hard way.i got sick of being treated like a bald head quick.i learn shit quick tell me show me i got it,try it on my own you can leave now.
it was like they were trying to keep me down,so i turned to learning about harleys myself and only talking to people i trusted.which is very few and far between in my neck of the woods,so my shovel still sits never finished after ten+ years while my dad does a federal stint.but with the discovery of the internet i now know that i can finish it with the help that i can get from the internet on the few things i don't quite have figured out.although i don't know if i can stand seeing it out in the weather after all these years in my dining room, haha.
i think if you already have a basic understanding you can get jerked up to speed very fast through the internet.
    i call it "internet diagnostics".
here is the shovelhead that i plan to have the internet help me finish, hehe.

Thanks for worrying about me. I'm all straightened out now. I'm glad there's people like you, the kind that like to tell everybody how to do it, what ever it might be.
OK Dad I'm getting off the computer!!
