    The 4yr S40 Build

    2007:

I moved from Illinois to California and was getting my license and buying a bike in the first two weeks.

I picked up this 1996 Suzuki S40 for a cool grand:

    Week 1 the battery dies:

    2008

Had a gent from the Suzuki Savage forums modify my cam chain tensioner so it didn't open up in the case:

    Some Ill-conceived modifications:

This is my seat mounting bracket... seriously.

and the wires it quickly chewed through:

Those apes were bitchin'. The rest is a travesty...

Solo seat "brackets"... Im starting to regret posting all these pictures of my assclown work..

My "garage" at the time. Gettin ready to put a trailer fender on.

Made some "struts"... lasted about 50 miles on the freeway before falling off.

Brought in someone with a semblance of talent to fix me some struts

    Started moving things around:

    Temporary fix:

Moved the mirror to the old turn signal bracket:

This cat here was straight up murdered a few months after this ride... they found his bike in the ocean at low tide with huge dents in the tank, a 9 ft steel chain padlocked around the frame, and the petcock and ignition switched off. They didnt call the family until his body washed ashore a few days later with no damage to the lower body and severe head trauma... the Sheriff's said he rode into the ocean, got stuck and died... and closed the case...

    gratuitous topless shot:

FINALLY got a real garage and did shit like removing the airbox and battery tray:

Started tearing down the bike to check out the motor:

years of neglect and oil leaks left a lot of gunk

    gunk slug:

Like that you're putting in so much work to make it yours.

You gotta link or anything about your friend? That shit is CRAZY

His family made a website with the full story but they've since replaced it with a memorial page. I've been in contact with his sister and I can ask if she still has the video they made. In the past I've thought about getting a memorial ride together... this might just be the place to do it...

The cans were nice, but there are three issues with using em on a bike:

              1. HEAVY. They're solid steel. The ones I had weighed 5-10 lbs apiece
              2. Built to stack, not to hang. I mounted each can with two huge bolts through the fender rail. The thinner side walls buckled out a bit under all the weight.
              3. A proper mounting setup for the cans requires either reinforcing the sides or creating a strong basket to set them in. Either way, that's just more weight.

On the other hand, they're relatively cheap, made of mild steel so you can weld em, and overall nearly impossible to destroy.

Rode around with the bike half-assed for a few months and moved into a new place:
                [IMG][/IMG]

Got sick of having a bike covered in rust, a shit tank, and no real fender. Took the thing apart for a second build.

                Roller:

Went to the infamous Garage Company in Socal to pick out a tank. Got this one for $80!

Took the frame down to (shoutout alert!) a new socal shop called True Fast Garage and they welded up tank mounts I had fabricated.

Took the engine out, cleaned off the oxidation built up since the last teardown, polished, then shot the whole engine with high temp clearcoat:

                2011
Had the guys at True Fast Garage bend me up a bar stock into a sissy bar:

Rattlebombed the fender, miscellanous parts, and the new sissy bar:

Got around to replacing the block of wood under my seat with some temporary springs and a much improved ride. Also painted the forks and lower triple tree rattlecan black

Rode around with open headers and poorly matched carburater jetting:

                  2012

I moved into another house in December of 2011 (landlord was claiming to live at the house to avoid being foreclosed on, forgot to pay the utilities, and flat out confessed to being unable to guarantee the full term of the lease). When I moved in, I started getting some serious tools together. Bought a small bike/car lift, a huge bench vise, and most importantly, a 120V Lincoln Flux Core Welder

Here she is, as she sits:

I just welded together my muffler and header and built a battery box under the swingarm... pictures to come.

Thanks for sharing, its a cool set of pictures. I want to get one of those thumpers for a project as I've seen some sick bikes built out of them. Looking forward to seeing more.

                      You're a sissy

Bent up a piece of stock to extend my sissy bar:
