81 cm 400

seen a couple posts/ threads on the cm 400 This is one I did not too long ago, they are fun to do and run great. Have some good pick up for what they are.

Looks good, and I bet it was dirt cheap to do. Always a plus.

How'd you do the hardtail? It looks like the swingarms still there, but you lowered the rails under the seat to give a straighter line to the top of the axle plate. Did the funky-shaped backbone give you any trouble welding, I've heard people complain about stamped steel in Jap frames.

Are those wheels stock? Most the CMs I see have the Comstar alloys with disc brakes, but those wire drums are far cooler looking...

you are absolutly right super dirt cheap. 200 bucks, I chopped the bars, and used an old fender that I chopped up. etc. made everything I used on it. I did some crazy shit on the gas tank, at one time that was a stock tank and we know how big those fuckers are. The hard tail I cut everything else off the engine hoop, leveled the bike with the swingarm, and made the tubes for the uppers. they have a slight bend in em. made the holes in em and what not. I didnt have any trouble welding on this frame. when I put in the seat spring perches and that back cross hoop , also relocated all the electrical, the seat hing pin also the rear tank mount since its about 5 inches up from original. But no problem on the welding. I like these frames actually . the two things I dont like about them is 1, the back bone is big and boxy, 2, there is no bottom on it it bolts right to the motor. limits the stuff you can do down there. Oh yes the wheels, well honda makes an (economical) model of most of the bikes produced back then. hence cm 400 E those were the po boys bikes. you know laced wheels, drum brakes, no tach, alot less dummy lights. Perfect for what I like. . So they are out there but hard to get. I scored great on this one. I was up in denver getting another and the dude asked if I wanted this one too. I took em both.
