Japanese Bikes, Build Threads & How-To’sBuild threads, tech Q&A and conversations centered around custom-built motorcycles from the Land of the Rising Sun
I started a thread asking about neck bearings and got what I needed with the help so I thought I'd share some pics of some more work I've done with it so far.
I narrowed a tank & mounted it before I fit the bars & risers on the new (real old) springer and the risers hit the tank. I didn't want to reposition the tank, my springer didn't have a top clamp and I didn't like my handlebars with this springer so this is what I did.
Old bars
Scrap piece of stainless
Finished and kind of polished. I don't want it too shiney...my springer is old.
The bars I started with. I didn't have any 7/8" bars and I'm a tight ass so I asked around. A friend of mine had some way back in his attic from when he had a lowrider bicycle.
Welded all thread connectors in the bottoms of the cut pieces of handlebar
Narrowed a Sportster tank 2.5".
I only used the sides. I saw a Youtube video of how Special79 made a brake to form tank tunnels so I made one for myself. Made a tunnel and cut pieces to flat bottom the tank.
And here it is so far
The bars bolt in from the bottom of the new top clamp individually so I'll need to tie them together somehow but I'm going to wait until my filler neck & cap get here.

Thanks.
Yeah, I thought about the fuel and oil with that angle. I'll keep an eye on it. If there's an issue with it I'll make some Sugar Bear style rockers to bring the front down a bit.
Honestly though, with the amount of oil it was leaking when I got it and how great it ran, I don't think there will be a problem now that the carbs & valves are right and the oil stays inside lol.
For a 450 it's a screamin demon and a hell of alot of fun. I didn't have any expectations other than looking cool but it really is a great bike. I truly enjoy getting it out. It sucks that the weather is turning and I just got it legal.

I'm not a big fan of the long springer look without more rake, but I can appreciate that work you did. Any more plans now that it's just about too cold to ride it?

I don't have any more plans for it other than a more appropriate front tire...but I didn't have any plans for it to begin with so I guess I'll see what happens when I finish the tank. It's possible that I'll have an idea or two since I'll be staring at it all winter but I kind of have alot on my plate as it is. I have a few other bikes I'll be hitting hard this winter.
