so can anyone give me the heads up on where to score one of those wild sissybar/skateboard rack/luggage racks that all those dudes are sporting?

and if anyone has one, if you strap a bag to that thing, how does it fair in a high wind?

Thanks guys!

They are cheap aftermarket units with shady little 1/4x20 bolts, but these dudes all run them and a board locks in perfectly. Dents the fender after a while, but these aren't show bikes. The HD ones are much more robust, but obviously shorter and aren't automatic board-holders.

Baja Trip Summary

We rolled back to safety Monday and as much fun as it was, it was great to get home! Thanks to my wife and kids for putting up with silly trips like this, last one for a while, I promise!

This was an epic trip of a lifetime for sure. The riders didn't really have much info going in, none of them had been past Rosarito (except Ky, but he hadn't ridden in baja yet) and nobody really knew what to expect.

No one knew me before we left, except the producer Chris, and being ten years older than Heath (the oldest in the bunch) I was stoked that they were all super cool and no one treated me like the old grandpa of the bunch. Thanks guys!

The documentary will be out quickly on vbs.tv, probably around January or so and should be just under and hour total. There wasn't a whole lot of skating, but it's pretty hard to find rideable terrain in a country that's mostly washboard and cracked pavers. To the guys credit, when there was a chance, they took it, but after busting ass all day riding through some pretty hairy highways you can't just order them to session some shitty curb in front of the hotel. I think the piece will have a much more lifestyle-focused tone and let skateboarders get to know some pros by seeing them goofing off, riding motorcycles and just experiencing the harshness that baja serves up in Big Gulp-sized portions.

All of the riders showed immense patience, it seemed like we were always in "hurry up and wait" mode, waiting on the camera truck or whatever, but everyone stuck it out and hung in there, even when it was boring. They endured pretty big temp changes as we crossed the peninsula back and forth in both directions. Flies, mosquitos, bed bugs, good food, bad food, federales, fireworks, crashes, camping and always changing daily itineraries were the norm and everyone took it in stride. The thing is, once you get deep enough into Baja, there really is no choice but to just keep going, and go they did.

The crew was a robust bunch. Straight out of Brooklyn, NY, Chris (producer), Lauren (editor/filmer) and Danilo (camera man) all put up with our bullshit and managed to have quite a bit of fun along the way. I can't wait to see what they do with all the footy. EDR chase-truck driver who several of you have been rescued by, Matt "Baja" Frick drove the long bed truck and trailer behind the crew and never flinched as he passed semis uphill, around corners while texting and spewing stories the whole time. Thanks Matt, it would have been impossible without you.

Bob was a trusty ride for this run. This bike can go 90mph all day with nary a complaint. Look for a full feature test on Chop Cult soon. This wasn't your average magazine fluffy test ride, that's for sure and I've got quite a report for anyone who is considering a new big twin from the MoCo.

More pics and stuff to follow...

Heath Kirtchart. Dude hates the sun and agrees to ride to the bottom of baja and back. A lucha libre mask proved to be the best suncreen and he logged a lot of miles in that thing. Plenty of funny looks from the locals and federales with this get up! Watching him skate is to witness a real professional. He's not a bad boxer either, we found out.

Keegan Sauder. The only time Keegan wasn't smiling was when he wadded up the loaner sporty on the next to the last day of the trip. Luckily he was OK, but the bike rode home in shame on the trailer. Coming off a foot injury he did more surfing than skating. He ground through the curb feelers on the pegs the first day and was on a mission to grind through the pipes. This dude is hearty and I am glad to have met him.

Arto Saari, master of everything. He can skate in boots. Good motorcycle rider, all around great guy to have on any trip, ready for anything. When he pulled out a hatchet on the first night I knew this was a good guy to hang out with. Always down for a good time and never a complaint. Constantly shooting photos, I think he had a camera in every pocket. Hopefully I'll get him to share some of his pics, cause he took a ton and a bunch of them are bangers. Thanks Arto, your attitude the whole time was really motivating.

HiMe. Loser Machine and Von Zipper rep. Another robust dude who rode his own sporty, complete with forwards and drag bars and a barely padded seat. His only complaint? Not enough Starbucks in Baja! By the end of the trip his sissy bar had real baja spirit, held on with bailing wire and an extra piece wrapped around his trucks just in case.

Ky rode down with Harvey from Canada on his trusty Sporty. At first I just called them Canada 1 and Canada 2, but it only took a day or two to tell them apart. Ky's parents have a house in Loreto that they opened up to our dirty bunch twice on the trip. Meeting his mom makes it clear why he's such a nice guy. Mom is also a great cook. Thanks for the hospitality Ky & Family, it was much appreciated. Probably still on your way back to the cold north, good luck I hope the ride home goes well.

Harvey was the "other" Canadian who rode down with Ky. Non-stop laughs. This pic was in a bar in San Ignacio, where Harv was on about day twelve in his Guns and Roses shirt and Welcome to the Jungle was blasting out of the cantina. I had to take this one for you Gilby, you would have been proud, the kid is all rock n roll. His sporty shit the bed somewhere about two thirds of the way down the Baja and last I saw him he was in fierce negotiations with the HD dealer in San Diego, wrangling for a trade in. Hope it worked out Harv!

Patrick O'Dell, the guy behind VBS's Epicly Later'd and an expert on Scientology got a "crash" course in dirt riding on the loaner Fat Bob, but it didn't dampen his spirits or his pursuit of Starbucks. Him, HiMe, Harvey and Ky headed south the extra 30 miles or so from El Pescadero just for a latte and to say they really reached the true end of the road. Beware the Thetans!

In conclusion, thanks to everyone for having me along. Here's a few pics that can only be Baja.
