    Yamaha XT500 12 volt coil?

I have a '76 XT500 that I'm installing a trailtech 12v regulator/rectifier and 12v battery eliminator on. I have the diagram to rewire the lighting coil, but I can't figure out if I can use the stock 6v ignition coil, or if I need to replace it with a 12v one from an SR500 etc. It seems like you would have to, but from reading some threads online, there are people that have only changed the regulator and bulbs and are having no problems. Anyone here have experience with this? I'm retarded when it comes to japanese stuff...

I would be curious to know as well. I eventually want to convert my XT to 12v. You might check sr500forum.com they may have some info.

They are two different circuits. You can do all the lighting on 12v, and not touch the ignition and leave it 6v. There are two pick up coils in the stator, one for lights and for ignition- just leave the ignition alone. I just did it and it's working great!

          works

thanks for the responses guys, I ended up figuring it out on my own, still running the stock coil, got rid of the stock plug wire and made my own, got 12 volt charging and lights without a battery, magneto, points ignition, works killer so far...
