That's very common.... That happens when the trans and motor isn't in line, or the bolts come loose and it vibrates...... Many will say have it welded and machined, Yep that will work for sure.... I've fixed them with Green locktite and clamps....
It's just a seal lip and not there for support..... -

That's the BIG fix ....
Now for the EASY fix..
1)
VT No: 15-1280
James inner primary o-ring saver kit includes metal silicone bead gasket and lock tab
2)
VT No: 15-1299 GB
3)
VT No: 15-1281
James inner primary o-ring saver kit includes metal with foam rubber gasket and lock tab
All three of those requires the lip to be ground off the case....

The "easy fix" works fine for this common problem. I'd run it until some future teardown for other reasons. Another way is run a bead of sealant into the crack, install O-ring and ride. I've done both on mine with no problems. If you want to remove it neatly, dress it down on the bike with a flat hand file after removing what's left of that "ring".
If you're overhauling this winter anyway I'd use the sealant method and skip the gasket for now.Comment
