I have been off bikes for several years. In 88 I had a honda 750f super sport then went in the navy and bought 2 sportsters and a yamaha xt350 shortly after getting out I bought a triumph tiger. Then came the children. I sold everything and did the dad thing, not because I was afraid of making them fatherless but monetarily I had to shed costs. Not to mention I felt guilty leaving the family and going out to enjoy myself. Kids are well grown and I miss riding. I’m shocked to see how much cheaper everything seems but that may be relative to the cost of everything else these days. That being said I guess my question is more about bikes that where being built while I was not necessarily paying attention. Specifically FXST’s between 94-09, I know I could ask other places but I’d really like honest answers and one thing I know is if you ask most people that own them on other sites and sources of media you’re less likely to get someone to tell you their shit sucks. Engine configurations are really irrelevant to me, I get that they have problems but nothing I can’t handle. I want to now more about suspension and handling seeing as I live in Michigan and our best roads suck. And no I don’t want another Honda.
Where to begin, again.

Softails are fine bikes, but the rear suspension can leave something to be desired, especially if the bike has been lowered, as almost all of them have. The twin cam motors in Softails have counterbalance shafts, and so are very smooth.
If suspension and handling are important to you, you might want to consider the Dyna family of models, for a better handling bike of roughly the same size.

I could afford new but why? When there are so damn many good used ones to give love too. I could give a shit about engines when I could tear it down to the nuts and back without breaking a sweat no matter the type. just really wanted real answers to the question of how limited the suspension geometry was and how well it could handle the distance stuff. The market is flooded with decent used bike but I have never been on a softtail. the other one that interests me is the fat bob. Seem to be a bunch of them available at killer prices.Comment

I didn't mention FXR because the sort of rider Softails appeal to wants a more classic looking machine. Softails make nice choppers/customs but OP needs to ride one to decide if he finds the comfort acceptable vs. a rubber mount like Dyna, FXR or bagger.
If you want something for distance work a bagger is far better than a softail on the highway. Rubbermounts win on comfort.
I can afford new but don't want one because I prefer my motorcycles be utterly simple and and don't care for extra weight.
One option is buy what interests you most then sell it if you don't like it. Never marry what you can pimp.Comment

Softails go down the road just fine. They’re not sport bikes, they’re Harley’s. not sure what you’re getting at.
I prefer the ride of a slammed four speed frame way more than a softail or fxr, but I guess I’m missing something. Rode to the giddy up on a 95 softail last year, something like 2300 miles in 3 days, roads are roads.Last edited by Guest; 05-24-2019, 10:19 PM.Comment

I’d throw a pan hardtail on it but I have a billion projects(have a similar enough one on the list) and need this one to run down the road.Last edited by Guest; 05-25-2019, 10:21 PM.Comment
