    FXDX VS XL1200S forks

So I have been doing a little research on the FXDX fork and the 1200s fork. The parts fiche shows different part numbers for the tubes, cartridges, and springs.

My question is, are they the same overall assembled length?? Could anyone measure the unloaded length from axle to top of the actual tube on an FXDX for me?

I assume that the different cartridges and springs are due to the difference in the weight of the bikes....

I have access to a set of cartridge forks but have no way of knowing if they are sporty or fxdx without disassembling.

thanks in advance for any info.

The fxdx forks are 2" over and 1200s are standard length. Also fxdx are only 2000+ style legs

like mike1407 said, although dual disc, 1999 FXDX forks are different than later DX forks. They are NOT adjustable and have the older style brakes. 2000-up are adjustable with the better brakes. The DX has longer tubes and stiffer springs as the bike weighs in at almost around 70lbs heavier.

Not that it is relevant but, 1996,1997 1200s did NOT have cartridge/adjustable forks or shocks.

Not 100% on this but i think the FXDX come with a 1" axle also.

                00-03 is 3/4, 04-05 is 1"

Where did you get that info from? 1200s suspension was the same throughout all the years it was made.

I had 100% stock 1996 1200s with both fully adjustable forks and the adjustable piggy back shock and just finished up work on another '96 with the same.

this is not true. The 97 model that I chopped had the tunable suspension.

Mike, so are you saying that the FXDX fork is 2 inches longer than the 1200s fork? or just 2 inches longer than a standard FXD?

                      thanks for the help guys.
A measurement on the FXDX would be awesome so I could determine what bike these forks came from.

                        I've got a 2000 FXDX.
I'll measure them this afternoon when I get home.

i believe there 2" longer than the 1200s and im guessing but a standard fxd as well if the come with standard length legs, 96 was the first year for adjustable suspension on the 1200s.

'96 was the first year for the "S". They got dual plug heads in 98. Some say they are the fastest harley ever produced, and power numbers are off the chart. (google it!) They practically destroy chassis dynos, and butt-fuck the streets. (scientific fact...) oh, and I have no idea about the inseam of their legs...
