65 triumph oil

Doin my first oil change since i got my 65' this weekend. Whats the best oil to use?

Use any good 20/50 motorcycle oil.

Do not remove the crankcase drain plug;you have been warned.
It's more preferable to remove the return line from the oil tank,and just run that into a bucket for the first minute after start-up,when you have changed the oil in the tank.The rocker spindles are happy to run for a minute with no more oil.

That way,your return pump is less likely to fail and give you grief.

I think Amsoil is what was recommended by the factory, though this may be difficult to find in your area, any decent 20/50 should be fine, though I would steer clear of "synthetics".

not trying to steel the thread but maybe someone could answer this. My oil pump has failed me on a 71 t120 and i am trying to remove the cam cover. if anybody can let me know how to remove this thing , thank you.

you gotta pull the whole ignition assembly out

What's the problem with draining the crankcase, I've done it thousands of times?
you just pour about 4 oz. of oil down into the timing plug and that will help prime the return side of the pump.

disconnect the wires and pull the points plate off, then put a large screwdriver in on the side of the advance mechanism base plate and try to tilt it sideways, if it doesn't work go to the other side and try it there, it's on a tapered shaft so try popping the taper loose and it will fall out.

the next thing you need to buy is a manual.

I like Castrol 20 50 , you can use the same in the gearbox, or run 90 wt. gearoil

I was just talking with a friend and he said the same thing. 20/50 in place of 90w gear oil. Is there an advantage to 20/50? Whats the differance between the two?

Perhaps off topic but a good place to learn about motor oil principles is here:

The bobistheoilguy site is intended for modern m'fr water cooled engines and not our old bikes but even so it is a useful read and can give a foundation to understand how oil works in all engines, and how motor oil has evolved over the years.

I believe the 20 50 is lighter, the 90 weight in the gearbox has a higher viscosity and can help if things are a little hard to shift. Those in the know will correct Me if I'm wrong.
