650 triumph My oil pump is working great, when I open the cap on my aftermarket Factory Metal Works oil tank, a good stream is pulsing out the return line. Problem is its it's bypassing the small line to the rockers . I held my finger over the return and it blew the rocker hose right off the pipe coming out of the tank. So i know i have good pump pressure. Question is, is there some way to meter the return line pressure inside the tank, so it backs things up enough to hit the rockers ? Or is there something I need to do up top to create a drop in atmospheric pressure that is causes a vacuume to draw oil up to the rockers?

With the acorn nuts removed I would take an oil can and squirt some oil in the end of the rockers. If you look inside the inspection holes you should see oil flowing out. If not I would remove and clean the rockershaft and rockers assemblies.

choppadude gives sage advice. next check you might test for actual oil flow to the rocker feed pipe. pull off the rubber connecting hose for the metal rocker feed tube assembly from the oil tank end. attach a test hose about a foot long and run it into a clear beer bottle (Miller High Life). Drink the beer first, stuff the test hose into the bottle, duck tape it to the frame or have a hleper hold it and start the bike. You should see a good stream right away, then shut her down. a few seconds with no flow to the rockers won't hurt anything. Do this test with the engine hot so there will already be plenty of oil in the top end. If you pass this test, you've got flow. So then you douche the feed pipe with carb cleaner and rod it out with string - nothing metal. pay close attention to the ports in the banjos. test by blowing through the tube and/or spray a steady stream of carb cleaner through it. Reassemble with a fresh rubber connecting hose and copper washers behind the acorn nuts - no gasket goober or you might clog up oil feed ports. if test fails - no flow thru test hose, go back and match all oil hoses, tank connections, vents etc. as depicted in the Triumph shop manual. should be one for one with your aftermarket oil bag. you might have a hose mis-routed or be missing a connection or vent. good luck.

Already removed the pipe,it's new, so no build up inside. sprayed carb shit through it, came out the banjos ok. I'm pretty sure everything's piped ok, filter new strainer in tank. Hose to feed line,front pipe coming out of engine.returnline to bottom of teed fitting . Right angled pipe from tee to the rocker. Only other pipe comes out of the top of tank points towards rear of bike. Used as a breather, currently going to a vented catch can. No oil leaks unless I plug the vent pipe, then oildumps out the breather in the primary case. Like I said the the pump circulating the oil. Removing the oil cap on the tank, and a pulsing stream shoots across the inside of the tank. If I had to make a guess, I'd say the exit hole is too big and dosent have enough restriction to force oil through the rocker hose.

most after market oil tanks don't have the correct oil restriction hole at the top. on a Triumph oil tank the end is pinched shut and a 3/32" hole is drilled in it.

3/32" would be about the minimum size you could use for this restriction,and it can be enough to blow the hose off the rocker-feed pipe.I've used a 7/64" restiction just below the oil tank,with a T running to the rockers just below that.
The standard restrictor hole is 7/32",and if hot oil can lift to a height of one foot above the rocker spindles,then you have enough pressure (less than 0.5 psi).By using a restrictor half the diameter size,you get 16 times as much pressure and 4 times as much flow.

On my triple (I know it is a whole nother ball of wax) the rockers do not have a separate line from the oil tank that feeds just them, the return line just has a T that goes to the rockers.

we run a 3/32 hole in the top of the return pipe with the end pinched off..never had any issues before with not enough restriction...give me a call 704-941-1261 i will gladly help you out as much as i can...if its blowing the line off when plugging it but still not feeding the rocker then there is a issue somewhere else..if you do find something wrong with the tank we will gladly replace it or fix it but i have yet to run into any issues like this that was tank related please call any time....

oh also take the line of the rocker feed and blow threw it and make sure you get air into the tank maybe some how the t on the return line got clogged if you dont get air in the tank then its clogged some how..if its clogged run a drill bit threw it carefully!!

I think I've got the rocker feed problem fixed, I'll know for sure if I ever get the fucker started again. Gone through carb, got spark, got gas, think I might have a valve that isn't seating, adjusted the valves 3 times in 2 days. I was riding the other day, a lot of noise up top. Plugs were all sooty. Eventually stalled. Walked it home a mile and a half. Haven't been able to start it since, I'm afraid the head has to come off. I'm running out of things to try. I checked timing, right on, did a compression test 150 and 140 cold. What else is there?:

For what it"s worth, I ended up soldering up a brass sleeve/ cap that loosely covered the oil hole in my oil tank. also had to drill the "t" before that.

there is another thing to check.
the rocker shafts are hallow shafts with two little oil feed holes in them and often times they get plugged up with sludge, you can clean them out using a piece of wire to get all the sludge out and then shooting carb cleaner through it until it comes out behind the rocker arms.
