Ok, I need to know: what is gold leaf vs gold paint. I know in some cases gold leaf looks dynamic and has movement (in the art sense). The helmet in the link has what is described as gold leaf, but looks like gold paint to me. What gives?

OK...taking helmet painting to an all time low! Here is my ghetto paint job:
Gold spray can over black primer over previously flat black with horid stripe/outline. I think the best think I did was layout the design with masking tape, but even that job was botched when I found a bit gold under the tape. Oh well.

hey guys, check out montana paint. professional graffiti artists use this product, resist burnin, and chems.. so many rad colors, seriously (a bit pricey, but a fraction of a professional paint job)

Gold leaf is tissue paper thin sheet gold that is glued on with a sizing. Gold paint is.....well, paint that is gold colored.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like it could be leaf. But I'm not sure if it's top coated with anything to protect it?

I always thought gold leaf was done to give a particular texture, but it seems that you can do a smooth finish as well.

So I made a solid bone head mistake yesterday:
I have spent the last couple weeks painting a helmet (full face RF1100 to be precise) and it has taken a lot of work. Masking and prepping a full face seems to be twice as much work (or more) than a 3/4 helmet. So after many hours of prep, design, paint coats, etc., I am finally ready for clear coat. I lay down a full can of clear and get ready to start on the second can. As I was clear coating my helmet, I was also painting parts for my bike. As I am laying down the second pass/stroke on my helmet I realize that I just fucked up. I had grabbed the flat black instead of the clear! "You gotta be fucking kidding me!" is all I could think of.

It doesn't look horrible. Fortunately the first stroke was on a black section, and the second was only a dusting. If I can't sand it off, I can live with it. But what a bone headed thing to do. I just might have to paint a bone right over that area to remind me not to be a bone head!

Re Gas + Paint Equals Wasted Time

A very inexpensive solution I used on my Honda 750 short chopper, was using VHT clear engine paint. I blew about five coats on my gas tank and valve cover. I have dripped gas on both parts three times so far, with almost no ill effects at all. I get a very slight whitish stain, but so far it's rubbed away with some polishing compound. I'm going into my second riding season with this stuff, and it seems to resist scratches and marring as well. Another year, and I'll probably just wet sand it lightly, and pour on another couple coats. Total cost for five or six coats on my tank and valve cover was $14 for two cans, and I still have slightly over a half can left. I'm working on my Kawasaki 750 twin cafe racer right now, and I'm going to use the same idea, but I'll bake it on this time. Should be even better, I'd think. Time will tell.

i leafed and striped this helmet. you can either brush or shoot a clear over the leaf to protect it. in this case i brushed a clear over it. the light must hit the leaf at the right angle to really see that it is leaf. in perso. it is mucb different than in photos.
