First off, just in case you don't know. I'm an Old Guy.
I constantly watch Craigs List and ebay for a deal but what I find is "Chrome Turds" for sale. Is the mentality of (most Newbie) H-D owners just in to piling as much Cheap Ass Chrome and Flames on a bike? Then they try to see the POS for thousands more than it's worth. On a used H-D I wouldn't pay a dime more for all the Chrome Shit they've bolted on (unless they have the original parts they took off).
I see the mentality here as "building" a bike, making it yours. Not just bolting on Cheap Ass Chinese Chrome Shit.
During Bike Week here, I'd rode my "Bobber" over to one of the local Harley bars. There was about 300 bikes in the parking lot. A guy standing close to where I parked walked over and says, "Damn, Cool Bike". Then he proceeded to tell me how I should clean up my spokes etc. (The wheels were Used and are dirty. I Like them that way.) My "Bobber" has about 600 miles on it and it Has Not Ever Been Washed and I doubt it will be. I'd just as soon as the Chrome Shit on it be Black.

I love Smart Asses... Basically nothing to do with what my Point was. Today being the 29th. will be the First Day in about 6 Weeks that I've had off. (I have two calls and two emails I didn't answer so far.) I own and operate a Heating and Cooling Business at the beach and for the 12 weeks of Summer it's 7:00 am to 8:00 pm and two days this past week after 11:00 pm. If you have any HVAC experience, come on down and you can work 12 to 16 hours a day (7 days a week) and I'll go ride.
So tell me, how many miles have you rode since March? I'm trying to decide right now what bike to ride for lunch.

Whenever I see threads like this I always wonder if the original poster is venting in order to simply justify his personal tastes in motorcycles and style or if he is posting it in order to gain acceptance from the "masses" here by following along with the anti-rub mentaility that ChopCult seems to foster? Either way it's ridiculous. I don't like 95% of the motorcycles I see on here but I rarely post my negative opinions because I am not the person that has to ride them.

And another twist that I can't comprehend. Why does everyone have to try and read something that's not there? At 57 years old, I don't have to justify anything I do and could give a Rats Ass about swapping spit with any of you. If I pull into a crowd of bikes, the owners that I'm interested in talking to are ridding a Rat, Something they built or something old. Not a Brand New Twinkie with polished spokes and Chrome Spark Plugs (I forgot the Neon)!
To elaborate on my original post. I commend the people here for Building and ridding what they like. I've seen some real talent here. You get respect by earning it (IMO). Over the years I've owned or ridden almost everything made. All I own right now is H-D's but I'm not a "Basher" of other bikes. Some of the "foreign" ones I've seen here I liked 100% better than what the Factory Original was.
I just came from the H-D shop to get some bolts. I had a shock bolt break on the Bobber. I raised it on the jack last week but that's all the time I had. I guess I should go check the mileage. It's just not important enough for me to go look.
HandOverFist, I like the Sportster. I bet it's fun to ride. Nope, it doesn't look like the typical old guy scoot.

"Bobber"
Bobbers are for fishing.
One,,why waste the effort in getting upset ?
2: ROFL I see the same Chrome Crap and goodie folks bolted on 30 years ago, and now most folks worship and pay more for that shit than it ever sold for new.
and since teh dawn of the Nu "push button biker" seem they are all trying to claiming old school and think they know more than the NEXT Nu guy.
If your looking at bikes you should be focused on whats under the BS,,as that's the only reason you should be looking at it in teh first place

since you are overemphasizing "the bobber" so much, could you please explain which bike it is? some cool early flathead with patina or a twin-cam with used look?
why are you buying bolts at the dealership??
I don't want to provoke or attack you.
just call it your "bike" and let others be as they want to. If everybody would be as cool as some are, the cool wouldn't be cool anymore

I'm going to say he has several bikes. Bobber describes the one he's talking about.
If a soft tail can't be a bobber, obviously a sportster can't be a chopper.

Black is the new chrome
One of the reasons you see so many blinged out chromosexual bikes for sale is that many owners are looking to change out their bikes. Many have heavily invested in them and don't want to throw more money at the machine to "murder it out". So, there's a trend is to sell them for as much as possible to the dwindling chromosexual market for as much coin as possible then head down to their local shop and pick up the latest Dark Custom or SOA wannabe Dyna. Hell, one of the shops that I deal with that does chrome exchange is now doing black exchange. It 's even worse for the BigIronhorsedog owners that paid through the nose for thier cookie cutter oneofakindbutnotreally beach ball custom choppers.
Soon everyone will be riding murdered out "bobbers" and thug bikes and the trend will go on to something else.
I've had several customers and aquaintences tell me they wanted to flip thier bikes but were very discouraged by the current market values. I have performed several chopper sex reassignment surgeries with good success but it's really hard to squeeze a few more grand out of most of the owners, (still cheaper than buying a new bike IMO). Many of those bikes have huge high performance engines that with a little motor work, some scotchbrite and bbq paint can become the fire breathing monster they were meant to be. The first one I did, Involved cutting up the frame to bring the stretch down to near stock specs and cleaning it up. Believe it or not just about all of the parts are there to go from this:
To this:
I just wish I knew what to do with those gawdy billet wheels. I usually harvest the hubs out of them and turn the rest of them in for recycling.

I think all of this is pretty funny. I ride a 2000 Dyna twinkie, its not as cool to some as an iron knuckle pan shovel head but its what I have and its my only bike right now. So if being reliable, comfortable and pretty quick isn't cool then it just happens to be what is whats most important to me. I'm not about to thug it all out into some wannabe soul sucking POS SOA thing even if it is an FXDX. I'm doing what I can afford to do myself, no paying some so and so to do my work for me. Some of it may look killer, or turn your stomach but its my bike so I don't give a fuck what someone else thinks unless I ask for an opinion just keep it to yourself. To me paying for chrome is like replacing shit on a bike just because you can, unless it performs better or makes the bike more comfortable or useful why do it? Kind of like paying someone else to chop your ride for you, throw money at it till its cool. I'm not bashing the guy that needs help to do this stuff but the guy that doesn't actually turn a wrench unless its to put Chrome do-dads and other BS on and pays someone else to do it all the other work for them. The worst is the guys that can afford to do this and sink a shit load of money into something then let it sit. Chrome shit and paint do nothing to the value of a bike to me. To me the best bikes are ones that have evolved over time, just because its some type of style doesn't mean crap if you can't enjoy it. Its a total package deal. Quality always over quantity and fuck all the form/function bullshit, crap is crap. If it looks the way you want or works the way you want it to then thats cool, may not be my thing but it can still be cool.

So my Gyna Glide is more a bobber cause I cut a bunch of the fenders and shit down without chopping anything on the stock frame. Meh whatever, it's my bike and I'm gonna go change the oil so I can ride it to work for the rest of the week knowing it's really a bobber in disguise pretending to be a R.A.T.
