Big inch Evo questions. Input please

My stock 80" in my 91 FXR isnt cutting it anymore. Just doesn't have enough balls. Im looking to get some more out of it, however its a '91 and i believe thats the early weaker cases.

Im basically just considering multiple options and looking for some input from those who have built evos.
I ride this bike hard and push it in the mountain roads. I rev it pretty good considering. Hot rodding around town happens. We all do it. 3-400+ mile cruises and trips are not uncommon either. So basically all ends of the spectrum....i need a good reliable motor that puts out plenty of power.

-Doing a simple jug, piston, cam, head etc. swap is fine, but i can only go so big and theres the issue with my cases when i get to the boring aspect of things. What options do i have? parts and configurations youve used? Branch, Mackie, S&S, Axtell, etc etc? Stick with the 88"- 96" range? I need a good solid motor that i can push hard. Any suggestions on good tried and true parts combos?

Complete S&S engines are out of my price range. I simply dont have it. Out of curiosity I looked into El Bruto series Ultimas. For half the price of a S&S I can have a 107"-127" Ultima at my door ready to bolt in with 115-140 hp. But are they worth it?
- Does anybody have any experiences with their new motors? I know they had some issues in the earlier days but from what i can tell now thats a thing of the past and theyre cranking out some reliable powerhouses for relatively cheap.

Any input would be appreciated.

ultima motors are good strong motors and hard to beat IMO as for hoping up a 91 evo I,ve done a cupple 91's and both pulled the cylinder studs when bolting back togather 92 and up seem to be just fine tho, You would be better with a new set of cases! A hoped up 80" will make most people happy but you could go with a 4 5/8" stroke to make a 89" or 4 5/8" 3 5/8" bore for 96" and be veary happy! port the heads cam in the 252 @ 50 range 10:1 (could just mill the heads .090" for 10:1 also) and set the squish up right somewere in between .025 - .030" good ex and intake and should make you happy evan at 80" anything bigger is more power tho

I've known a few people that have bought the Ultima engines and they've all been very happy. My best riding bud runs a 113" and just loves it. The machined surfaces are all very nicely done and it just seems to be a quality piece overall. If I were in your shoes I'd buy the Ultima and never look back.

Opinions may vary...

Have had no problems with Ultima motors, especially the pre-2006 units. Have had the 100, 107 and 127 in personal bikes, and they are all strong and take mucho abuse. We have put 1/2 dozen or more in customer bikes, all evos, and everybody is happy so I would say they are fine.....

I been making a bunch of calls and am pretty much limited to two options; building a motor with new cases or replacing the whole damn motor. Spent 20 minutes on the phone yesterday with S&S. They took the time to basically "build" a motor with me based on the way i ride. It was nice to get somebody on the phone that actually gave a shit even though i wasnt set on buying yet.

Had a stock 89, 80" that after 150 thousand, decided to rebuild and hop up. The machienest I used sat down with me and we went through everything, ended up with Keith black 9.5 to 1 pistons, Manly over sized intakes, cleaned up ports and combustion chambers, 550 lift cam, crane lifters and pushrods. Motor ran damn strong, guessing somewhere around 80 to 90 poneys but, and this ya gotta take into account, it broke the right case right behind the lifter blocks which, inturn pulled the head bolts and blew the head gasket. I have heard of several other stock cases doing this. Still deciding if i'm gona weld them up or replace the cases?
I also got a Ultma 113" in a basket FLT, put it togeather and it ran like a striped assed ape! Couldent bealive the power difference. After the check ball stuck in the oil pump and it sumped out the oil, I pulled the 113 and am building a hot rod around it. This is the only isue I've had with the Ultma and it could have happened to any motor but, havent put enough miles on her to tell ya one way or the other.

Evo Motor

There are things you can do to you're motor a lot cheaper without having to buy a new motor , and it will still be reliable..Start with a Andrews EV-27 Cam , Flat side mikuni carb , and a thunder jet tuned exhaust..Then a high performance Crane Hi-4 , ignition..Change the rear sprocket to a 65 tooth for more top end .. change the petcock to a pingle for better fuel flow..That' will give you a lot more performance..
