Lets talk Shocks

I am finally looking to upgrade the suspension system on my 76 T140V. Right now I'm looking in to getting a set of Hagon rear shocks and some Progressive Springs for the front. currently I have the stock set up and its getting old. haven't narrowed the focus any further than that yet and would like to gain a bit more knowledge before I just buy something because its cheap and fits.

Funny, I just had this very discussion this morning while getting plates at the dmv.

But to answer your question...Going with something cheap that fits would be new stock springs. My stock 68 t120 has progressive springs in the front and Hagons in the rear with stainless shrouds. So it has a much better ride while keeping the stock look.

If you're not worried about keeping it stock, Ceriani or Betor 35mm forks are a common period upgrade but you'll have to modify the stem as well as machine up an axel and some tophat spacers.

engine is a mash of triumph legos. 71 cases, pre 65 tranny & cover (for speedo), might go big bore, but I'm still working on my bottom end.

Yeah before this morning I was really only thinking about getting some rear shocks probably ohlins because a buddy can get me dealers price on them, and changing the fork oil, but your comment "do this and you'll never change it again' (in reference to hagon and progressive springs)really got me thinking and excited to modify it further, though it might have just been the talk about flat track.

I hope you were able to leave with plates.

Yeah, after two trips (in one day) to the dmv I finally have a plate on my 1950 (and my name on the registration). Because, I definitely wasn't riding it around with the plate off one of my other bikes. I would never do anything like that...ever.

We should definitely go for a ride sometime, I'm hoping to bring the Triumph over to Hugh pretty soon so he can make sure all the work done to it by the PO was done right.

I am running works shocks in the rear and Buell forks in the front. It handles great and rides like a Cadillac. The stance is a little ass up, but dynamically it is awesome. Some build pics;

diggin the second shot. Also the Running Mann Flag. Where did you get it?

Now back on track. '72 TR6-R Stock forks with progressive springs and modern 20W fork oil. Rear Hagons set for me. I ride anywhere from just puttin to pretty aggressively. 5'9" 165ish. The roads I ride are mostly secondary (back) roads with variable surface. The suspension gets workout plenty. Works okay but the racer in me is always looking to improve. Progressive also makes dampning rods for the OIF front end but i don't know anyone who has used them and they are kinda pricy as I recall.

The "standard" for years was Ceriani forks with Koni shox. Then Works came along and pretty well changed all that up. I am a fan of Betors but haven't ridden a Triumph with them. Raced alot of Bultacos

Nope, they are actually Alphabet race pipes from the 70s. They really woke it up at the top end. The problem is, they don't clear the kicker (hence the dent). The flag came from the Isle of Mann. My dad went to the TT and brought it back.

Back on topic.... The Works are going on the shelf, I am throwing on a set of stumpy Konis, I need a change. Ill let you gents know how it works out.
