I've always felt hat the reasons to go metric are cost and reliability--and that running a velocity stack would fu'up both of those. Much more frequent oil changes, difficulty to keep it from going way lean & running hot.

There are both DIY and store-bought solutions to making he air-box go away.
Search on "Grampizing' @ Gadget's fix-its, VROC.og etc. for home-brew DIY

http://www.thundermfg.com/store/ for a store-bought fix, including jet kit & a new A.C.
I think that unfortunately most of Thundermfg. A.C.'s are big honking units :-(

Anyone have a set of drag pipes they are looking to get rid of or any other loud pipes?

On that note. Have you guys done anything cool with your exhaust? I just cut mine down about 8 inches from some vance and hines pipes. Kinda getting tired of em. Loud and cool but plain.

I've always been a fan of upswept fishtails, and high pipes. First incarnation of my Vulcan I went high...but currently it's a bit more subtle.

The Vn 750 always struck me as a very different animal from the 800, what with the high front end and up-tilted
tank etc. which suggests other directions to take the bike in, i.e. the bike itself is more chopper-like. But I guess any
bike is like a blank canvas...can go anywhere the painter wants it to go.
here are a few of my ideas i have been kickin over the past couple of years

I have a cheapo unit that I got from auto-zone, it's a four inch round k&n style air box. I had to make a mounting bracket and do a few other mods, but once you have the parts all out and look at it it makes sense I think. I can post some pictures up later if you are interested. Oh, and you will need some rtv sealant to make sure it is air tight.

Mr E, that would be a big help if you could post some pics. It'll give me an idea of what to look for at the hardware store.

Not a Kawasaki fan, but I think the Vulcan 800 is the best looking metric cruiser and makes the best chops. You guys are killing it.

I had a vn750. Cool and pretty quick bike in my opinion. I gave it to my dad when I got my vn1500. I let him sell it when his legs wouldnt let him ride anymore. I wish I would have bought it back now. Oh well I'll just work on the 1500. Doesn't seem to be too many out there.

SocialMisfit and I both run VW air filters. They're about 10-15 bucks at your local veedub shop. Take a pair of tin snips and cut it to roughly fit your rubber carb boot, then seal with silicone. You'll have to figure out a way to bolt it on to the air cleaner bracket...mine had a vacuum hose outlet on the air filter that I just ran a bolt through. Has worked perfectly for about 15k so far.

One more note...you might have to cut the rubber carb boot a bit as well to fit around the threaded part of the air filter that is used to attach the front cover. So it's a pretty permanent mod unless you have another boot laying around.

54mm pod filter from Dime City slaps right on there, no modification necessary. Just watch out for the rain...

Looks cool! I wonder whether there would be a performance difference between that and my vw intake? Doesn't seem like it would be much, but that is a tiny tiny filter.

Once I changed the intake and exhaust and re-jetted accordingly, my bike felt way faster...did you have to rejet after that mod?

any change in the amount of air into the carb requires a rejet, so yes I did. I used 170/52 and stock needle as suggested on Russian wolfs website. It seems to have equated to a significant performance upgrade. The only downside I've found, is that if you get caught in the rain, your going to get some spotty running, because this offers little protection from the rain.

Cool man...I may give that filter a try just for the hell of it. Thanks for the tip. Are you using K&N oil on it? Only reason I ask is because I've ridden in torrential downpours before without any problems (aside from my own suffering and misery, hahaha...).

I need louder pipes. I currently have the Cobra Boulevard Slash Cuts. I drilled about 8 1/4" holes in the back of the baffle and its still to quiet. I want drags, but don't want to lose the back pressure. Let me know if you have anything that can fix my issue. Not looking to spend $300+ on new pipes.

You need a certain amount of backpressure for it to run right. I ran open pipes for about a week before I was sick of the power loss and backfire on decelleration. Drilling holes won't make it that much louder, but it will destroy your backpressure.

Do you still have the stock pipes? If so, cut off the mufflers, bolt 'em on, and see if you like it.

Keep in mind that it's only an 800cc motor. It's not gonna sound like a 110 inch Harley no matter what you do. Even with open exhaust, mine wasn't that loud.

I do run K&N filter oil on it, from a filter cleaner kit. Its always been on there, so its hard to judge if its making a difference or not. The filter is a tight metal weave instead of a paper or foam filter, so I don't think it "holds" the oil well.

I may upgrade it in the future for looks, but its a cheap, easy option that I'm sure flows as much air as any filter out there.
