Got a new Fulmer helmet for $10, and it was kinda small for my huge Irish noggin, so went to town on a passenger helmet using rattle can paint and clear, with a little bit of gold leafed leaves (I know, you mind just assploded!) thrown in-between. I'll tell you what, that mirror bubble shit from Biltwell is high quality and basically makes you look like you just stepped outta Prometheus or some shit!

I put the tape on before the base coat was dry, lesson learned.

Did this right over my 1st attempt. Duplicolor color/clear, and roth flake. i do have some spraymax2k but I'm saving that for my tank and fender after the riding season ends.

1st attempt

currently I have to final sand and buff this one out.

I still have to put the new snaps on when the clear cures (can says 7 days) and install my liner but I like how it came out.

mine

Was going to do sharpie art on my white full face, but decided to paint it instead. So this is what I came up with yesterday. Used minimal shit, everything I had on hand here and could do a WAY better job if I had taken my time not rushing through while trying to watch the 3 babies by myself and using some proper materials, BUT I had a lot of fun doing it and looks way better than a plain white helmet now.

Materials Used:
400 grit sandpaper
Testors Model paint (rattle can);
Silver - Base
Red Candy / Blue Candy (says transparent on the labels, same as candy)
Craft store glitter spray paint (didn't work. was too runny, actually ran off of the helmet it was so thin)
Kustom Shop gold flake
Dupont Chromabase Clear
Cheap gravity feed paint gun from Norther Tool. Used the one with the biggest possible tip for the flake.
3M Fine Line tape in 1/8th and 1/16th
Scotch green autobody tape
Windex wipes (for pre-paint cleaning prep)
Sunday Paper (Richmond Times Dispatch) was the biggest one I could find.
Dupont acrylic clear A-7480S (Acrylic Trim and Jam Clear)
Razor Blade (couldn't find my xacto knife)
1 YD Pink Flowery Lace (only used a tiny bit, but wanted more for future projects)
1/2 YD Micro Fishnet (for the snakeskin)
Maxwell House coffee (I prefer Folgers, wife likes Maxwell House)
2 packs of Camel Filters. *WARNING* Don't smoke Camels while spraying candy paints, you'll get a monster buzz but the headache afterwards is a bitch

Before

During

Panels done

Pinstriping done

Getting ready to start my clearcoat process now, will post more pics when I'm done with that.

I seem to keep buying silver metalflake helmets every time I go to Born Free...
Bought a Bell dot helmet this time, and tried to make it match my tank....

There's no red on my tank, though, just brown. DIdn't think I could recreate brown, so I went with red

I tried to do little round splatters but it didn't turn out as I planned.

I used Duplicolor Metalcast transparent spray paints.

LESSONS LEARNED: (I was basically just playing with shit I had around my shop. Seeing which materials would work with others. Learned I don't want to mess with cheap shit anymore. I'll stick with proper paints, clears, and flakes together. I knew it wasn't going to come out perfect, and had pretty low expectations. Overall, I'll still ride with it cause you're not going to notice the flaws as I'm truckin' down the road so who cares. I wouldn't brag about the outcome though for sure :lol

DON'T:

1 - Let your 7 year old daughter Mia around you when you're painting. She's going to stress you to the fucking max. Especially when she starts flipping the razor blade through her fingers like it's a fucking quarter saying "Daddy what's this for?" or when the touches your fresh clear coat and says "It looks really smooth and shiny right here Daddy!"

2 - Use Testors model car candy. It's weak to the chemicals in the clear which will make it run and bleed through.

3 - Use sharpie to touch up the D O T sticker that you sanded through when prepping. It will bleed and run and start to look more like a P O T sticker which will attract more cops than no sticker at all.

4 - Worry about your nice clean tape lines or messy amateurish pin striping lines, they're going to run like a $5 Asian hooker in the rain's makeup when you slap the rattle can clear on anyway.

5 - Paint this shit in the basement, or leave the helmet on the kitchen table to dry. The wife WILL get pissed and the cats WILL use it for a new bed.

DO:

1 - Buy more RUM for the pin striping part and for the after part.

Bleeding Candy

Wrinkling One Shot

Bleeding Sharpie

Not as bad looking from a few feet away ;}~

Wierdbeard, that is sick!

KurseD- what clear did you use? You should add this to your list:

Don't- use (clear) Laquer over Duplicolor Metalcast,or any other enamel (like One Shot).
