Here's my humble first attempt at a distressed helmet.

The pin-striping was the only thing done by a pro.

About how long does it usually take for the paint to dry enough to tape it off and move to the next section? I've gotta try this technique, been messing around with scales for a couple days now.

...just a thought ,might be wild enough to try!
not sure if this is what you where talking about with the plaid...but this is "Kilt Lifter". tank is striped in dark grey and lettering in gun metal with red stripes on the side. flat black base, red flake square sections, then metallic silver stripe, metallic gun metal gray stripe, then another shot of red flake, then candy apple red. lettering is the hand made stencil i cut for the side of the tank. didn't get any other shots of the tank up close finished as i've had it torn down doing some other work to it. and now i'm on an 8 month west pac on a destroyer. a lot of plans when i get back with this bike for sure.

10 - 15 minutes depending on temp, you dont want it to dry, just slightly tacky.

Also, all you guys might wanna check out Rice Paper from Blick. Killer effects for laying down scallops with "Distortion" or texture. The rice paper is almost like the fabric idea, but finer holes, so it lets thru less. use it as your stencil and youll get some sick gradients and really cool end result.

Other painter will probably kill me for giving this tip away, but I learned it from a old timer who was passionate about keeping the art alive.

paint help

why is the adhesive from my tape either coming off on my helmet or messing up the paint job? I thought it might be cuz i didnt let the paint dry long enough so i let the latest coat dry for about 18 hours overnight.. tapped off for my next coat and it did the same shit. What am i doing wrong here ?
