This has to be one of the coolest threads on the site. I'm inspired! Thanks for resurrecting it.

square deal rider.

I dont race flat track. used to race offroad and i was a member at square deal riders (Harpursville track) for quite a few years. i hope you had a great time there at the vintage races!! its a solid club, with years of history. Ive watched/worked some great races there, dirt track and speedway and i have to say the camaraderie involved is amazing.
i didnt make it to the vintage races this year and im dissapointed. if i had known it would have been nice to meet you mike.

Square Deal is where it's at, man! It's one of the oldest continuous running tracks in the country and Don Miller & crew always put on a killer event.

I started this post to introduce my fellow chopper riders to another discipline of motorcycle riding and to show how relatively inexpensive it is to get into. I'm far from being a great flat track racer but I have the greatest time. It's an incredible sport and you're surrounded by the best people. Hopefully, I've inspired a few of you to come out and check it out.

very cool post

This post is of great interest to me for a couple reasons.First of all I traded a set of vintage wheels to Hugh a few years back for a project he was doing. We chatted a few times and he sent me a pic of one of his bikes. He is a very nice guy. Glad to see he is still at it.

The second reason I really enjoyed the post is I have been riding vintage flattrack for a number of years.Great fun and always a great bunch of people. Here is a picture of me on a Can-Am in a C&J frame. A good way to see about local races is to check the AMA site and see what district you are in. Then google your district and they will have all the events, news, results etc. on the site.

Ice is Nice dirt hurts

I am from Michigan and a ton of pro riders come from Michigan.Scotty Parker,Jay Springsteen,Jack Warren,Bryan Smith,Henry Wiles,Jared Mees,Bryan Bigelow,Nichole Cheza and others. They all have one thing in common. Ice!!! In the winter you put on your stud tires race and go to your local lake and put in a couple hundred laps a day.Awesome fun entire families come out we cook hot dogs and burgers and ride all day. So don't sit and wait for warm weather some of the best and funnest riding is in the winter!!!

Just found this thread. Been goofing with street trackers for a few years, but this summer I finally put my money where my mouth is and started racing. I raced mx back in the 80's, but this is more challenging and dang fun!

My boy's in it with me too

For those of you still thinking Flat Track is nuts...... AMA Pro rider Jason Griffen does it....with ONE arm. I watched him get 3rd back in July at the Barbara Fritchie Classic here at the Frederick 1/2 mile. The guy is an animal.

Yeah, Jason is my hero! Although, I think he has an unfair advantage with the weight loss. (I joke) But seriously, you use your right arm to push the bike down into the corners, I've always been in awe of how he pulls the bike down with his left arm not to mention his ability to adapt.

Hey Greasermike,

You went to Supercamp? My son and I went in June. What a blast man! I really got yelled at a lot, but I came away with some great stuff. Hoping to go back someday...

no need to spend a fortune

Here is a picture of a Can-Am in a modified Champion frame. My buddy and I shared this bike and called it the ratmobile. It had parts on it from just about every make out there.Raced it a couple years and never touched it. A lot of the time it got left in the trailer until the next race. We sold it to a guy looking to get into flattrack without spending a lot of money and he raced it a couple more years and did pretty well the second year. I bet it is still going somewhere. Fun bike fun times!!

Go to the american motorcylist association site and they post races nation wide. Should be able to find something close.http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/ Click on races and which type your lookig for. Short track for example and see whats close. Hope this helps.

Great thread Mike. I live about twenty miles from a dirt track, and while I had considered racing my homebuilt XT Supermotard, (now long gone,) a few laps around the farm where I high sided into the trees convinced me I slide better on pavement.

I am currently building a XS650 scrambler very much in the vein of Dimitri Turnin's Street tracker which was featured in IH.
