rounding out sportster tank flat

has anyone had luck getting the flat out of the top of the 2gal sporty tank without an english wheel or planishing hammer? Im new to metal work and on a budget. Any input would be great.

Did you cut the tank open or you're trying to do it from the outside?

If you cut the bottom out, its very possible with just some hammers and dollies. Metal working isn't very fast paced work. So I hope you have some patience. Good luck!

BTW, I do recommend a plastic stretching hammer. They work very well. Even the cheapies from harbour freight. Just get out there and start experimenting.

Cutting out the bottom you could raise the flat on a sandbag. But you'd still have some work metal finishing it.

I think the plan is going to be cutting the tank bottom out since i want to frisco it and relocate the filler anyways. And then Ill go at it with the mallet / hammers, and dollies and sandbag. I may try out one of the cheap air hammers to see how it works out.
