Xs650 charging system problems

The last couple times I've been out on my Xs, its started to spit and sputter near the end of the ride then die altogether. I've always heard horror stories of the charging system s'ing a d. I have a brand new complete stock system for it but wanted to test the bike as is before I swap anything out. Ive noticed the lights don't brighten when i twist the throttle but how can i use my meter to make sure its not charging? Any suggestions.....i get that the banshee swap is the way to go....thanks in advance for that tip but I'm not looking to spend cash on that right now.

The spitting and all that crap!!! yeah, I have been there, with my very first xs650, right from the beggining, I am on my third motor, only because of the charging system failures. this last motor, has a brand new stock system, and has not done any of the things the first two did! I feel as if, this third will be the last, and when it goes, or, if I run into someone who is reputeable, and willing to do a whole change over to a PMA along with the ignition system all a new, and do this for trading, as in, I will over do there bike with my leather creations, and really make there bike be totally different than before, as in, extremely tooled leather seat, slant saddle bag, grip covers, foot peg covers, even frame covered completely!!! crazily!!! with no smooth spots left on the leather I finish!! any color! and graphics they could possibly think of! yaahhddaaaahhh yaaaahhhhddaaahhh!!!! I just need a serious person who is local, so I can make all that is applied to the bike/chop/whatever really fit upon this vehicle, and just scream, that it was supposed to be this way!!!!! I have thrown this lure outthere, I got no bites,,,yet!!!! I may not be the best leather smith out there, but!!! I am certainly not the worst!!! believe this! I have seen the worst!!! I am also very nice and polite, when I see crappy leather werx, I do not talk about it, or anything! I know how hard it is to get to the professional level,,, it is very difficult!!! I love doing leather werx!!!! I would even consider just giving one of my complete chops for trade to make my xs650 have all that it needs to be non yamaha charging system as well as ignition system not being yammyy!!!! I need to go to bed!!!!

Get Hugh's PMA swap anyways. The stock system is bound to fail at any time, and the stock replacement parts get expensive after a bit. Hugh's kit is bulletproof and you'll save by never having to spend a dime on stock stuff again and never have to worry about your bike leaving you stranded because of a dead battery.

Swine just go to hughshandbuilt.com and he will set u up with a pma kit. The pma is a Permanent Magnet Alternator, which as the name suggests the magnets in the flywheel are permanet, instead of the original electromagnet setup that they originally cane with. A much needed upgrade, and well worth the money. I havent purchased anything from hugh yet, but just from emailing him a few times his customer service is second to none. And with the pma kit you can run kick only and wire a capacitor where the battery goes. Check out xs650.com, hugh is always posting on there, and theres tons of info on the PMA kits!
