i see a lot of cb's and xs's around here being built but why no kawasaki's?

i found this and it seems like it would be an ideal canidate for a mild chop. sportster tank here (does the frame allow for a tank swap without any trouble?) , lowering there, fender work, solo seat...fuckkkk it.

well shit.......if you say so! haha

how are the carbs on that thing? 4 of em scares me a bit.... whats the easiest way to go about lowering the shit out of the thing? any easy swapable parts from other kawasakis that can be had for cheap and fit easy?

they are out there you just gotta look.here is a pic of my rider and a kz chop from denvers that i think is killer.
the 3 tube backbone makes it a little harder to just throw a typical sportster tank or wassel tank on without mods.
the cool thing about doing a kz is they are fast and reliable and ya don't see em everywhere like cb's(not that there is anything wrong with cb's).i'll see if i can dig up some cool pics of kz customs.meanwhile here is my z1r and the typical lowlife bike.
don't sweat the multi carbs, just like doin one four times.

i really like this one, what kind of rear suspension do you think that is? i like the fender suspension combo...just the way it sits. i guess im just another one of many who is feelin the brat style stuff lately. even the seat which i normally dont like that much (prefer regular solo) is really nice.

those are stock mounting locations with some shorter/shortened shocks.it is the seat fender tailight combo that works so nice.

A lot of drag bikes were made out of the 900s & 1000s. Maybe KZ's just veered down that path vs chop scene???

Listen people. Leave the KZs alone. It is the last jap bike from the 70s where the prices haven't gone through the roof. Please. I'm begging you. I have an xs project I'm sitting on, have a runnin cb500 chop. My best love though, is my KZ1000. Not chopped but made to look like an old 50s cruiser. Parts are cheap, bikes abound. Please, I beg you, leave something untouched.

called on the 79 kz650 and the guy said it runs good, needs the carbs syched but its low miles and hes only asking 700 bucks. he says it needs some cosmetics but i could care less as ide strip the paint and get rid of everything anyways...

BUT he said the owner before him was running some sort of fairing with a radio and all the bells and whistles, thus fucking with the wiring...

my question is, if worst came to worst and i just was over my head trying to re-wire it could i pull everything i dont need (signals, gauges, etc) and simplify it all with just the headlight and tail light with a smaller battery? do the kz's have any unusual electrical that i should know about?

Dude we chop a ton of kzs around here they are perfect candidates for brats . just did a 440 and a 400 and just picked up a 650 yesterday, also just did a 750 and a 750 4 will not do the 900s and 1000s they are just to cool to chop up to me. about that wiring. first off dont pull off or clip off or anything on that wiring. It is relatively simple but takes time to sort out. If you do like I did on my first one you will be sorry, i chopped and cut all the wires thinking aw im just getting rid of the blinkers etc. Boy did I fuck up. Id say get it and pull the harness mark what every wire is when you pull the plug like( horn) coil + shit like that. then put your harness on the table split the tape open and start working your way through the wires getting rid of what you dont want. as you do this you will notice alot of the wires commonize that is they come together in a link up point, thats where you trim from, then as you keep doing it you will begin to notice the main power or ground line. not too hard pm if you get into any head aches I can help. as for trickiness find out if the bike is electronic ignition or points fired, that will tell you alot. good luck man KZS fuckin rock !!!

Kaw's were meant to be real fast bikes, they never did get as much hopper aftermarket love as others, but I have seen some real great chops made from them.

Oh yeah, don't sweat the wiring, its seems way scarier than it really is. It's just wires and some stuff after all. Just look at a stock diagram and eliminate everything you don't need with some white out. That will generally do the job.

If your planning on chopping it re-wiring is going to be the least of your concerns. Trash that 30 year old rats nest and start from scratch.

Thought I'd revive this one.

I had a 79 GS1000 that I did some customizing to. I wish I hadn't sold it.

Here's Suzi:
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i236/djturnz/DCP_0001.jpg

I sold her for a crotch rocket, huge mistake.

I just picked up an 82 KZ750 LTD 4 banger for $700. Not sure what style I am after yet. Right now I just want to make sure it's all good and inspected. I'd like to do a Brat/Bobber style, but my wife likes to ride occasionally (with 3 kids, everything is occasionally that doesn't involve car seats). So I don't know about going single seat. I also have been without a running bike for almost 4 years, so I don;t want to do any mods this summer that would have me down for more than a day or two. I want to log some freakin' miles on this thing this year.

Sunday I was riding up and down my street, no tags, no registreation, no insurance, ya know, like a real biker.

I also have a "custom" RD400 in the garage. I hope to make that a long term project. I'll post a pic of that in a different thread.

Here's my KZ750, I'm currently rewiring... easy enough if you do as dirtyd said. Though I got in a jam at one stage as I was working without a wiring diag... these twins don't seem to have a lot of info out there.... Super good bikes though they do have kinda funky frames which don't take well to other tanks....

kzs are built - it is that mainstream thing with the xs650s and the sohc honda 750s- plus theres alot more aftermarket parts for those 2 bikes. with that being said- the kawi and suzi inline 4s are the better bikes .
yup after 30 years of dinking around with xs650s i have finally turned over a new rock and refuse to go back to one again. so im sticking with the oddball bikes- like thumpers, bsa, kawis and suzukis.
id take a kawi as #1 choice for jap bike choppin.

I picked up a KZ550 LTD and its a hoot to ride. Once I cleaned and synced the carbs the engine runs really smooth. Had to hack some off the rear cause the LTDs have huge seats. It has attitude sitting still and is really fun to ride, I would not hesitate to get another KZ for a project only issue really was finding jets for the carbs but I shoved some Mikuni's in there and they sort of fit and it runs better then ever. Since these pix were taken I've trimmed down the back of the seat so its flush with the rail.

heres my heap of shit kz1100 shaft. The frames on these bikes are nasty backbones, and really nothing you can for tanks without chopping/replacing tubes. This bike is almost running, having carb nightmares. Once its shaken down, the frame will be getting chopped up for single stretched backbone and stretched downtubes. got a sky-high seat and sissybar to go on as well

One of these days I'll be yanking the motor out to see how bad it really is. Gotit from Homebrew when I gave his wife my Sandcast CB750...I guess he doesn't like me very much, hahaha.

Anyhow, it was sitting outside for a good long time so the motor doesn't crank. Also, there's no carbs, but there's a guy on NH CL every few weeks advertising KZ parts so once I get it apart and see what I'm working with I'll probably hit him up for one.

I'm not really sure the direction I was going to take with it. First I was planning a Cafe, but now I'm not sure.

Here's a pic of it the day Dave brought it home and a couple of "inspirational" bikes I've got saved for when I start tearing it up.

Here are a couple photos of my Dad's 'Brat'/Cafe inspired 440 LTD.

It received some cool frame work and a radical tank by Joel of Solo Cycles. There's a picture of it in the Photodump at the second Hippy Killer Hoedown, but it had different bars at the time. Since these pictures were taken, it's received a kind of Copper/peach looking paint job on the scallop part of the headlight bucket, tank, and fender. Pretty slick.. And this thing is fast! The old man loves it. Next up we're working on a 1980 KZ750.. Can't wait.

Those are sick, especially that green one, maybe my 550 needs to be a rigid after all.

And just because I hate it when I'm looking over threads and there are CL ads that have been removed here are the photos from the listings. If anyone knows anything more about these I would love to hear it.

For Sale. 1978 Kawasaki KZ 650 Bobber/Chopper. This Motorcycle has just over 9,000 Miles on it at the time of listing. The Motorcycle has a Kick Starter as well as an Electric Starter which both work. The Motorcycle Frame has a Custom Hard Tail and has been lowered 4 with a fresh Black paint job. New Items on the Motorcycle include: A new Sportster style Gas Tank with a fresh seal on the inside. The Gas Tank also has a new Sifton High Flow Petcock and new Gas Cap. It also has a new Solo seat, new Chrome 10 Ape Hanger Handlebars, new Throttle and Grips, new Clutch Cable, new Headlight and Tail light, new Tires, new Fork Seals and Dust Boots. It also has a fresh rebuild on the Carbs with a Dynojet Stage 3 Jet Kit, new Air Filters, Custom Sissy Bar, and Custom Pipes with a great sound. The Tank, Fender and False Oil Bag / Electrical Bag have all been Powder Coated with a Green color as close as the Powder Coater could get to a Kawasaki Green with a beautiful metallic added. The Tank and Rear Fender have also been Custom Pin Striped. The Motorcycle runs great and looks better in person than in the pictures. The pictures do not do this Motorcycle justice. The Registration is in my name and current. I also have the Pink Slip in hand in my name. Serious offers only. I do not want to trade for anything except CASH. PLEASE DO NOT ASK. I do not need any Tattoos or Sand Toys. I already have too many of both. No Low Ball offers please. If I do not respond to your offer it is because I am not interested in your offer. Please do not be offended. I put a lot of time and money into this Motorcycle and I know what it is worth. The Title is NOT a Salvage Title. The Motorcycle has not been Blue Tagged. There is no weird back story to go along with the Motorcycle. This is a legitimate offer for a Motorcycle for Sale. $3,800.00 O.B.O Thanks for your consideration.

Will a Sportster tank mount without modifying the frame? I keep seeing pics of KZs with sporty tanks. I think I like it.

Been working on this for a little bit. Just need to order a few parts and then wire it up.

for one to fit properly on the backbone you have to cut that triple backbone up a bit to make it a single backbone. nothing major to it. but i think it looks better than leaving the triple backbone on the frame and just plopping a sporty tank on it.

thanks man.trust me there isnt much to be interested in. the shocks are welded solid. i just hate the look of struts, it looks proper when a swingarm frame has shocks, so i just drained the oil, compressed em and welded them solid, then cut down the coils to fit.

Amen to that, I hate the look of struts too. And I think your bike looks gnarly as fuck!

Justin666, did you cut the backbone to mount that tank?

You could make some taller mounts off the frame to hold the tank up off the backbone more.

no its just resting on the part where the 3 tubes meet. and ive got rubber inbetween the tank and the frame so they dont rub all gnarly.

Can't wait.
