tryin to find a tank for my xs build. already mocked 2 sporty tanks one frisco style mount shite and the other run of the mill. hated it. like the look of the trump tanks and what not but they are a bit pricey for my rice burner. the stock tank is long gone... some one used it for taget practice (to get rid of the old gas).:banghead: and all the jap tanks i have seen thus far that might look cool have this wide and high tunnel thing goin on and look like they dont hold any goddamn fuel!!! found a decent cb tank that didnt have that whole glove compartment deal on it but it was rusted to hell on the inside. and a hodaka tank would be fuckin killer but they are too small!!!!!!!!! any guidance for me here in gas tank hell? ha ha

sporty tank . . . yeah yea yeah everyone uses them, there is a reason for that . . . THEY LOOK GOOD! I think the key to building a nice looking XS is proportions. Things have to stay small because overall the bike is small. Put a large tank on it and the proportions go to hell and it looks like shit.

just my 2 cents

yeah i like sporty tanks on xs builds. just didnt look right on mine. i cant go to big and i understand this. its the proportions that are givin me all the trouble!!!! ha ha. want it to look cool, be mounted solid (the whole idea of the bike is so i can beat the piss out of it) and hold enough fuel to make somewhat long distances without having to stop for gas every 10 minutes. ha ha

I used a sporty tank for my XS850 build. I put a higher tunnel in it though, so it sits a little lower though. I saw an XS650 with a Mustang tank and it looked pretty sweet.

i was/ am going though the same issues for my cb 400 build. a sporty tank looked good on but the back bone is so thick on this thing it would sit on top of the frame. i was thinking of a fat bob tank and using one side for fuel and hiding all my electronics in the other. not sure what to do yet, just wait for the swap meet and see what deals i can find!

This is the stuff that drives me batty. Went to my local bike junkyard looking for a lower tree for my bike -- doin the 650/400 swap and got sidetracked by small mustang tank. Already have the sportster tank I plan on using but still................
cyclexchange has a way cool 3 gallon mustang style tank that has the rib running down the center of the tank and the gas cap is also flush and ribbed. Way fricken cool and only like 170$---hello tax return.

course fenders are a pain too.......paint, pipes, bars........shit

I think the key to building a nice looking XS is proportions.

that's a general rule for all custom bikes. There are a LOT of talented "builders" out there who can fabricate great parts, spray nice paint, but still just don't have an eye for proportion.

And then there are guys who have a perfect eye for stance, but can't build to save their lives.

It's rare to find someone who really can nail both.

I really dig the axed tanks from Lowbrow Customs (http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=888) on yammies and honestly anything and for $129 you cant go wrong.

i narrowed my sporty tank 2.5 inches check my album out.... i love the profile of the sporty tank but i think it needed something to change it up a bit.... tired of seeing the same stuff.... also those alien tanks lowbrow sells are really nice looking something a lil different

i have rebuilt my xs bobber 4 times so far -and ridden it all of 4 times lol. it IS all about proportions. what makes it even more tough for me is to see so many amazing looking bikes with completely different stances, setups etc. the key for me lately is that it has to be rideable. i know that sounds obvious but i built a sporty some years back that i was very proud of and loved it visually. the prob was i couldnt ride it more than an hour. i have a horrible back, short arms and short legs - so i need a chop that is set up well for me. on op of that i can sorta weld, and sorta fab and sorta everything. so i always need help from pros so as not to kill myself or anyone else.

i picked up a sweet 70's chromed mustang tank that looks killer on the shelf. yet on 4 bikes ive tried it on, it looks like piss. plopped a sporty tank on the latest ironhead and voila - who would have thought that the MoCo knew something about style?

its amazing how pieces look great seperately but when you put them together they take on a whole new style. some good, often not. but thats half the fun i think - tweaking shit till it suits what you had in your head. i learned on the 1st build that its impossible to buy the right part or make the right part the first time, everytime. hence why my garage now has random shit hanging from the rafters!

Sounds like you need to make yer own custom tank. In the Greatest Hits section is a write-up on slicing and welding a stock tank into something kool. I'm gonna start cutting up a tank off a Nighthawk, cut out all the crap I don't like and stitch the bitch back together. Easy peasy Japanesey, El custom tanko!

the only problem using the rebel tank is how long they are stock you could def cut one up and make it cool but size wise they are big.... i agree just build one

I just got this on ebay for my 650. Not sure what the dimensions are but I really like the shape. I'll get pics when it arrives.

It's a CZ dirt bike tank

It will be refreshing to see different tanks on bike

This is a Honda XL enduro tank. It's not going to fit this application though. A little too big and I can't remove the front mounts without doing more work than I want to.

I didnt watch the auction and next thing I knew I was out of the action. I was all bummed out so I happened to check CL and just scored this daisho for cheap today. I still think that cz tank is the shit tho.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person that thought it might work!!

I NEVER buy stuff on ebay. I had to have a friend bid on it. I also noticed very few views and no bids.

Sicklboy, I believe the Jawa and C bikes shared many of the same parts.

Do you have a picture of the rad tank on a bike?

That old Honda tank is cool too. Is that a 350 tank?

Though due to bolts that are too long and cables I will re arrange the tanks aren't sitting as low as they will ...but you get an idea anyway ...
