old guy, couldnt ride it anymore cause it hurt his back and yadda yadda well he doesnt make it a secret he wanted a big bike like a heritage or something so he tried his hardest to make this poor girl into one, including working front fender light which he was quite proud of- im not knocking him to each his own. riding this thing home was an experience i hope to never have again, i sat up high with my hands damn near at my waist, it felt more like i was riding on top of it rather than in it

so once home inspection begins and removal of things to make it more "my own"

this is how the tank was attached in the rear (sitting on the frame in the front)

shortly after really riding this bike (maybe for the first time in its life) i blew out the rocker box gasket in the rear, the breather bolts for the head were there but there but just tightened in all the way, that along with self tapping screws and other red neck ingenuity anyways.........

thats how she spent her summer picked up in middle of june with 12,000 miles and began the winter tear down at just under 18,000

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20101108170533.jpg

what started out as a semi-simple bar swap turned into much, much more
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20101018173250.jpg
made these up at gigastatts shop

i contacted steffan at zombie performance on here about bending me some tubing i wanted t bars but still wanted the top bends like the biltwell frisco bars i had- he nailed EXACTLY what i asked for......... however i didnt have anything to go off of and just made up the degree of bend i wanted in my head

i left these sitting up on the bike trying to see if theyd grow on me, the bends just a little to much for what i was going for, so as of now im not sure what im doing with em but im gonna make good use of them sooner than later!

got it! just gotta cut down the top bar, the plan is to bend the uprights so the bars a perpindicular to the ground cause i like to lean forward when i ride

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110126191144.jpg
4" aluminum disks with a 1/4" hole in the center (freebie from a farm i deliver to)

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110126203025.jpg

i should have taken more pics, but i used a 1/4" steel brake line to use as spacers the length of the filter (just under size so it would squeeze the rubber, theres 4 plates:
1st to get out past the carb top
2nd to rest around the circumfrence of the filter
3rd has stove top bolts counter sunk flush that pass through the filter, through the 2 plates and into the carb and a bolt facing out to escure the 4th plate
4th to clean it all up

the pics of it on the bike are before i polished the top plate and its still gotta be secured im gonna pound a carriage bolt into the 3rd plate and use a wing nut on the 4th total cost less than 6 bucks!!!

yup mandatory unless the bike was made/registered as 1973 or 74 and older

also gotta have a horn so i tucked it up under the fram rails on the bottom, forgot to mention i moved the coil to the top middle motor mount and made a marine switch bracket out of aluminum for above it ill have to grab pics of that soon

Well, not if it's a king. I've seen a few over the years with that graphic on the side, which I really like. If you plan on getting rid of it, measure if you get a chance and PM or something. I might be interested.

well the bars just need some time spent filing the welds smooth and than powder coat, im extremely happy with the feel, standing back they look tall as shit on there but sitting on the bike theyre just right

so we welded a chunk of angle straigh to the edge of the table, and than made a 2.5" wide spacer out of 2 pieces of angle welded together
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110203193022.jpg

than tack welded the top tube to the uprights, checked the spacing on the slugs bolted to the top triple tree and tack welded to them, bars come off the bike to have the bottom slugs welded solid
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110203182917.jpg

made up a bending tool out of some square tubing that was laying around and a cutt off tube
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110203184717.jpg

no pics here cause it required my buddy climbing up on top of the steel table and heating the tubing while i tried to bend it with out flipping him and the table over

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110203191053.jpg

final welding
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110203192842.jpg

now i just gotta clean em up and get em powder coated

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110204092130.jpg

the control area of the bars looks extremely long in these pics, it was cut down to be as narrow as possible ever since i split lanes in NYC this summer im obssesed with making her as skinny as possible..............cant wait to test her out on the EDR

*** forgot to mention upon deconstruction found out shes been upgraded to the 1200............ dear diary.............jackpot

well i decided i couldnt live with myself compromising on the bars i really wanted to make so i got ahold of steffan at zombie performance and had him bend me up some tubing. this past saturday was syracuse super swap, big ass indoor swap meet got a few parts and pieces i needed and scored a half handlebar for a couple bucks
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/20110214160310.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/tattoo2303/media/93%20sportster/20110214160310.jpg.html)

than spent the better part of an hour working the notch in each end using a mounted point grinding stone and a file

gotta cut down the control area and maybe take a little out of the height before i bend them forward, cant wait to weld these bad boys up!!!

started working on my paint this past monday, im using the duplicolor paintshop candy system except for the clear coat cause from everything i read that was the only consistent complaint.........i gotta say I LOVE IT, the paint is super easy to deal with cause theres no mixing just pour and go, this was my first attempt at painting and i couldnt be happier. this is just the begining during the week i will be laying out my design and should have the tank, fender and triangle done next monday, aaaanyways here pics:

primer (filled in stone chips with glazing putty, used duplicolor filler primer and wet sanded with 400)

silver candy basecoat, did and hatch pattern 3 times (not sure if that counts as 6 coats or not- i know i used hardly any out of the quart)

if your talking about the slim ribbed one thats on it now its a 82-92 fxr seat, theres atleast 5 on ebay in the first 200 listings right now after doing a quick search

i think the thick stepped up one is a corbin but id have to double check

Thanks for all the positive feed back guys!

heres a little masking ive done to layout the design, whats not taped off will be black and than im gonna put a white pinstripe between the 2 colors

(up in the corner there you can see an idea i had while looking at all the great products lowbrow offers, i printed the pics of the sportster tank they sell and drew designs on it to see what looked right on the actually shape of the tank- lots of things look good in your head or on a blank flat sheet of white paper- now i could see what it looked like on the tank a little better)

Are you sure the seat is an FXR? looks to be an early EVO Sportster part to me. Be carefull of the knife edges on the levers when you walk around the bike. I found out that sharp edges hurt. Those be some rocking bars. I thik they would have looked much better an inch taller and the center portion turned over!! Tim

hahaaha now you got an opinion on em huh? and the levers arent pointy, as for the seat i looked up ribbed hd seat on ebay and found 5 or so that said they were off fxrs so thats what i relayed. thanks for the tape trick came out sweet should have her 95% back together tonight!

the list consists of:
- bleed front brakes
- make rear exhaust mounts
- coat exhaust and get heat shields/wrap in leg areas
- make spacers for tank mount
- grips
- wire horn
- finish tucking and securing wiring

really should be able finish this all up in a night or 2

Well I've gotten a couple bits and pieces to make her a little more........... ummm finished (as if they ever are):

-some top secret prototype "beehive" grips from gigastatt

-got some heat shields and header wrap to protect mine/passengers leg (still need to paint pipes and install these though)

-cv carb bracket from pangea speed- sweet little stainless piece at a hell of a good price- sadly its kinda hidden but puts the enricher knob in a perfect place

-still would love to find a couple of the 4 ribbed biltwell tips for the pipes for a decent price- shoot me a PM if ya got some to sell or trade!!!

Other than that just been trying to put miles on when the weather even hints of something nice so I can shake anything off before the EDR- 2 weeks till we start the cross country drive!!!

just read as much as i could on here about it, obviously not enough though- heres some things i would do differently second time around

- take out the cam sensor and unbolt the cam gear
- use the putty knife trick to keep cams in

i wasnt to concerned about taking the rocker boxes off, i had done it before and it wasnt a big deal and many people say you should anyways, but in all honesty when i yanked that cover off and pulled all the cams out with it i thought my bike would never run again

tricks i did like!
- using a small drill bit from the back side to create some what of a serration to follow
- flap wheels and cookies are some of the greatest inventions for removing meterial quickly and cleanly
- learn to love a file and hand sanding!

as for the seat type in ribbed harley seat in ebay it'll come up- i think they usually say for an fxr, i bought it years ago and have just been holding onto it for the perfect bike

thanks for the compliments everyone!

(really toying with the idea of getting a new rigid frame and having the option to switch back and forth by just swapping motor and wheels/frontend back and forth- i have all the stuff id need and think it would be cool to see how fast i along with some friends could put it together- maybe this winter if the funds are availible)

The big plans are to rip it all apart and paint the frame/tins, and possibly change out the rear fender for something different, swap out the oil bag, finish the headlight nacelle and make fork covers and than weld it all up as one unit, change out the passenger pegs for some RSD moto pegs and a set of benchmark breathers, new pipes similiar to the crazy orange ones i had posted in the past out of some stockers i scored cheap, clean up the wiring in the back, move/change the front turn signals, gotta craft up some sort of sissybar that doesnt look terrible with the swing arm......... yeah im sure theres more but FUCK i should probably just get to work on it, summers comin!

scored these a few weeks back at super swap

old guy, couldnt ride it anymore cause it hurt his back and yadda yadda well he doesnt make it a secret he wanted a big bike like a heritage or something so he tried his hardest to make this poor girl into one, including working front fender light which he was quite proud of- im not knocking him to each his own. riding this thing home was an experience i hope to never have again, i sat up high with my hands damn near at my waist, it felt more like i was riding on top of it rather than in it

so once home inspection begins and removal of things to make it more "my own"

this is how the tank was attached in the rear (sitting on the frame in the front)

shortly after really riding this bike (maybe for the first time in its life) i blew out the rocker box gasket in the rear, the breather bolts for the head were there but there but just tightened in all the way, that along with self tapping screws and other red neck ingenuity anyways.........

Hey man, you still have the sissy bar pad on this thing? I know its been a long while since it was on you're bike but I'd be willing to buy it at the right price.

yeah i think i do, ill look around tonight and pm you tomorrow

the plans to keep the swingarm, the OL enjoys riding with me to much to subject her to that, making a kick up loop for the back to hold the full fender still, gonna come up with something that ill be able to quickly bolt and unbolt a sissybar for her and for longer trips when i camp (gypsy run) too

so the rear hoop, new bars from Jay at Special 79, got a set of fork covers from Lowbrow, gonna do something funky with a headlight, might try to tie the pipes together into a collector muffler setup, and than fresh paint, oh and gotta figure out better/different shocks, and getting rid of these god awful breathers (they look nice but im sick of oil everywhere)

Check out Dime City Cycles, they have a rear loop section that may work.

im looking to make it appear seemless, so im planning on making the hoop out of 1-1/4" i think they're 11" length wise thyre pretty good but theyre whooped just tired out, theyre a little soft solo and 2 up is not an option

thanks guys! everything's kinda on hold till I can get some cash together to get a couple pieces and parts, there's a big swap meet in Syracuse in a couple weeks and although I don't expect to find much in the simple bolt on department I'm always looking for something I can modify

should have some layout pics for what I'm planning on the rear of the frame tonight, and I'm planning to start work on the tank seeing as there's no real cost involved there

did a little brain storming and measuring last night, also picked up a couple lengths of 1-1/4" tube, gonna try to build a form and sand fill it, than attempt to cold bend it, thinking i might try and make it out of PVC plumbing shit first to see how it looks but the plans for a pretty simple flip up loop right now

ive run into that dredded mode of collecting and envisioning what i wanna do, i have a lot of irons in fire, half started parts and projects and frankly feel slightly over whelmed. funny thing is im unwilling to scrap any of the ideas or settle for not doing this or that that i want to do, its been the death of many other bikes i have in the corner but i refuse to allow this one turn into that!

heres where im at now

figuring out visor/fairing mating and test fitting front end

got a long way to go and looks like im gonna have to do a couple different grit sanding on them before actually polishing to get finish i want

picked this up, got some work and brainstorming to figure out how im gonna mount and make this work, not to mention the collector to get it all together

that tail looks good, they must have changed how the tubes that connect with the upper main portion of the frame look. mine is covered with sheet metal, but maybe it came with more pieces of metal for gusseting?

tattoo2303
02-07-2014, 4:40 PM
i think its different because it is only a 2" stretch, there is a temporary spreader bar welded in and additional instructions specifically for +2 hardtails

cant wait to put some wheels on this thing and make motor sounds while i sit on it, considering trimming down the neck gusset, especially since i dont use that hole that was for the gas tank/coil

4130Roadhog
02-11-2014, 9:22 AM
I am pumped to see it with the wheels on, and how much space is left with the +2 / drop 2. I just got a 99 for next to nothing and that's the tail I have been eyeing , but wasn't sure of the angles and useable space. Looks pretty killer though.

Did a quick and dirty roller mockup, after i welded it last night, rear axle is just slid through and the frontend is just sitting in the neck, i choked up on the tubes a little to try and see what the added weight of the motor will do to the ride height/stance and try to determine if i will need to further shorten the frontend to get the look im after

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/0211141953a_zpsysoileso.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/tattoo2303/media/93%20sportster/0211141953a_zpsysoileso.jpg.html)

yup thats pretty much it!

i scored a junk starter at a show so i could mess with it and not worry about messing up my only good usable one on my bike, roughly decided on center of the solenoid plate drilled a small hole, than using a step bit took it out to 3/4", took a grinding stone in a dremel and reamed out the hole a bit larger, i used a 1" deep soft plug from work part # 381-3016 (napa) as an extension. same thing on the soft plug- found center best i could, drilled a small hole, unibit to 1/2". the picture you posted is some fender washers and a small machine screw/nut holding it all together for welding

called in a favor to have a buddy machine a pin out of aluminum for me

the one inch stroke is over kill i could probably stand to lose 1/4 off the end but want to figure out what im doing as far as making a lever or a knob or something on the end, cant really test it cause the starter i took it off is junk but come spring when the bikes done i think itll work

got a seat in, went with the rich phillips snub nose from lowbrow, this thing is tiny! not just thin but over all a very small seat which is strange cause every picture ive seen online or even ones ive taken of my seat make it look bigger than normal- anyways not quite sure how/if its gonna fit the look im after, really nice heavy well made seat and its real leather but ill get some more pics on the bike once i get the fender mounted and im working on a seat mount i dreamed up. i guess ill see how it all flows together

fender mounts are designed fabbed and tacked, oil tank mounts are designed partially fabbed and a better idea of how/where theyre gonna go has been determined

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/1795582_10151892199667132_644441172_n_zpsd06a007d. jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/tattoo2303/media/1795582_10151892199667132_644441172_n_zpsd06a007d. jpg.html)

also ran into the fact that theres no way the battery is going to fit in the area in front of the fender below the oil tank, gonna take some creative thinking to figure out where to put this brick but i think ive got an idea, just wanna get the motor in first to see how itll all go

well just placed my last order on bought parts, a set of U-bend bars from Craig at Front Street Cycle, got the mount for battery box all set up (but forgot my phone at home so no pics) couple things left to do- weld in gas tank bungs, make sissy bar, make chain guard, finish weld everything thats been made up pto this point and than alter/add/mount to the pipes, cut the sprocket cover, and plumb and wire- seeing as the weather is still in the 20s and its snowing as i type this i think i still have time to get this done before riding season!

I cant wait to see what you are going to do to fit a battery on this thing. I am watching your build to see what problems are coming my way. I just got my DB tail in the mail last night. I went with the 2" stretch and 1" drop. I am still trying to finish tearing down to the frame, but hope to have in rolling soon. I am definitely gonna cut out the neck gusset too. It looks much better.

The problem with your alignment with the sprockets is 93 had a different spacer on the main shaft behind the sprocket. I've got the part numbers somewhere because I ran into the same problem with mine. PM me and I'll dig up the info for you.

If you look at the 2 pictures of the sprockets without the nut on the sprocket ends right at the end of the splines and beginning of the threads, if i put a narrower spacer behind the sprocket won't that set the sprocket further back on the splines to the point where the nut will run out of threads before tightening down the sprocket??

Started/finished my seat mount only snapped one pic right after we started, I'll grab another one of the finished piece when i get back to the bike, did some blacksmith type shit hammering out this 1/2 cold rolled steel into flat tabs. It was alot of fun

Here's the solution i came up with for the battery, pretty stoked on it considering how much love i put into the box, figure this will highlight it more than hide it, not to mention it fits here and didn't in the more traditional location, it's a big thick plate shaped to mount one half and solid rod to thick tube sleeves on the other, I'm thinking it should be plenty strong

Looks rad as hell. I figured a side mount would probably be the only solution. That or one of the antigravity batteries that are a little smaller. But i'm not sure even one of those would fit.

tattoo2303

I think one of those tiny high crank batteries would fit, but i already had this good stock battery and couldnt see dropping nearly 200 bucks to put out in there, not to mention i liked the idea of doing it a little different

thanks! i see what your saying/agree about the pipes especially in the lower back area, i re-used the front sections i had from last year and used every inch a $30 set of drag pipes to make the rest, in perosn i dont know as it looks as busy and me and my buddy that made them were proud of the fact we managed to fish them around to work and hug the frame.

took it for its first real shake down run last night and the only thing that fell off was the kickstand (which i found) and the verdict on the seat is it needs some springs or possibly a new seat cause its rediculously uncomfortable, and as much as i love the sissy bar we made that fucker vibrates like crazy so i may end up making a much smaller fender support type bar

your sissy bar vibrates because the pipes are long and bolted to it. if you dampened the exhaust off of that point with something soft or had a seperate mounting point for the pipes it would help with the vibration. i agree with the pipes, but not bad for a low buck part. looks dope

discovered some broken pieces while tearing it down most painful being this
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/tattoo2303/93%20sportster/10897952_10152472916347132_6613182812685192363_n_z ps03953a1f.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/tattoo2303/media/93%20sportster/10897952_10152472916347132_6613182812685192363_n_z ps03953a1f.jpg.html)

front cylinder down low, so im pretty sure the frames right in the way of trying to repaire this without taking the motor apart

well heres a couple shots of what she looked like for the bulk of the riding season, bars got changed a couple times, and the sissy bar got cut much much shorter, oh and some springs under the seat (still terribly uncomfortable)

one of the mid season repairs that needed to be addressed was the chain smacking/rubbing the oil tank

6" up 2" out, Bryant was quick, honest and easy to work with- im not one to hand off the work to someone else but not having the tooling to do this type of work i was forced to search outside help and i couldnt be happier with the whole experience- he is on instagram and facebook, quick and easy to get ahold.

up on wheels, made a neck gusset yesterday that needs to be welded in place, things to figure out still- handlebars, tank, things to be made/welded are tank mounting bungs, a new tail/seat, top and front motor mounts

than tear down for paint!

well all the tabs, gussets, mounts and hangers are all made, backbone is drilled for the tank mounts, couple hours of welding and the frame is set

also started work on the seat/fender/tail section thing, similiar to last years but smaller with a little more shape and flow

never posted much about 2016s version of the bike- i hated it! finished her up the thursday before Fuel in Cleveland by flashlight and ran to get an inspection sticker before heading out on the road with some buddies from Canada. She beat my ass- literally. got to Cleveland anbd i could hardly walk and had a sore the size of a baseball. a parking lot camping foam duct tape session the next night made the trip home a little better. she shook and rattled some bolts off and leaked a bunch of different fluids along the way but went there and back on her own power so although asthetically not my favorite version (the black one that i hardly have any pics of is) i guess it was a success.

having a new baby and 50+ hour work weeks didnt leave much time for riding, but that doesnt mean i have to leave her looking the same for 2017- so ive lost count of which # version this is but the ever evolving Creep Machine is coming back to black for 2017 and im hoping to blend some parts of my favorite versions into one final metamorphosis
