View Full Version : My Introduction, My 2nd bike, But My 1st Bob/Chop Project 78'

02-02-2011, 1:51 AM
My Names Danny, I'm From Chicago, but currently live in Tennessee. I've been "Doing" Honda Cars since i was 15. After Getting my pride and Joy Stolen in the City, I decided at 23 i wanted to get away from the for a while So i Move to Tn by my Family and Next thing I knew... I had a Kid on the way... Just like that, Poof, Kid! Hahaha, just trying to make a long story Short. No, Not by my sister or cousin, hahaha. He (My Son, Sebastian) is worth every day of it though.

I bought my 1st Bike @ 22 y/o and SOLD it at 24, My 06' Harley Sportster 883r, when i found out I had a Little one on the way. Ive been wanting another Bike for a while... So after a little Searching and a lot of Staring... I finally came across a Project that Ran and Drove that i felt was a good starting point for me, so I bought it! Mind you I am a Single Father w/ Split Custody of my 2yr old son. So I'm Ballin' on a Budget!

I found a 1978 Honda CB550 / 750, Hardtail. That was in need of a Lot of Love, But Runs and Drive Right Nice. Basically a Stock Motor and trans from a CB550, Frame is from a CB750 that was Welded into a hardtail. Welds are Strong, But UgLy! She's got a few mods, Most are Budget and junkyard mods, but I'm OK with that. i plan on making her my OWN. Check her out.

Loooks like a fun project, whats the wire running from the top of the engine to the fork for?

02-02-2011, 10:03 AM
Looks like a damn good start! What did they put over the seat, a trash bag?? Hahaha Looking forward to see what you do with it.

02-02-2011, 10:04 AM
that's for the Tach.

Loooks like a fun project, whats the wire running from the top of the engine to the fork for?

02-02-2011, 4:03 PM
If your talkin about the loosely hanging wire, it was the start of an electric air horn. Or it could be my tach wire Or my wire for the non working electric start... hahaha

The seat is a piece of wood with an old leather screwed onto it, that is one of the 1st things i asked too. hahaha She'll be replace before long.

~Im gonna be cleaning up the wires, heat shrinking them and tucking better.

~Gotta fix my foot pedal / tail light. I ordered a new sensor, it only works when i pull the front brake (which doesn't work, due to a bad caliper). I'm really wanting to pull off all together...

~The headlight is busted, so i ordered a new 7" Clear Glass h4 housing to replace it

~And some New Fork mount brackets to pull the old sleeves off.

~I also ordered 2x mandrel bent U's to redo the exhaust, since its only spot welded and uneven on both sides.

~Next Things on my List are -> Seat, Tail Light, and I'm Debating if i want some new Bars (I've always had a thing for Z bars).

~I'm going to run and pick up a new Mig Welder this week, so I can clean up all the welds and make sure they're nice and strong. Plus I'm building a Turbo set-up for my project car so it'll come in handy for my intercooler

I've been debating on a color for my tank and fender (Rear) Front will be removed before long... I think I've decided on GREEN, it's just a matter of which green now. I'll be spraying it myself also.

02-02-2011, 6:56 PM
looks like a really good base to start with

it sounds really cool in the video

02-02-2011, 7:19 PM
Sweet Starting Point, I built a CB550 Cafe racer. that motor is pretty strong for what it is. Are u gonna rock it flat black or is there a paint scheme your thinking about doing?

02-02-2011, 11:23 PM
Thanks for all the Kind words.
As far as Bike its Self:
The frame is gonna stay Flat or Satin Black.
The Front Fender is Coming off Or Being swapped out at least.
I am gonna smooth out the the Tank and Rear fender and I'm thinking Green Paint... Or Maybe Gold... Clean and Simple, Thats the way i like em.

The Little Man and I went Shopping and Picked up a Couple new tools...

Im over above jackson tn

02-06-2011, 10:19 PM
A hardtail, sporty tank and kick ass sissybar that you can strap fuckin near anything to! Great start on a great chopper/bobber.

02-07-2011, 10:52 PM
Thanks a lot, I'm wokin on cleanin up a bunch of stuff and changin her up a bit. gotta wait for my parts to finish coming in and the weather to break. I got her put away till all the rain and snow stops. waiting for my new seat and tail light still, then i'll pull her back apart.

04-07-2011, 11:08 PM
Havent had to much free time. I put a new-er motor in the ol' ladys car, a Bigger motor in my car and bought an suv to drive my son around in. been pretty busy. finally got a nice night to work on the CB...

04-08-2011, 5:14 AM
Cant see your last picture but the rest look like you got a good bike. Honda motors are tough as nails. I would chop that hartail off and start from scratch on that one but other than that you shouldnt need to do too much work.

It was a really nice day out, a little windy, but Nice. Played outside w/ my little man all day, But Did get a little work done while he was asleep. I painted a couple small things and mocked up my tail light.

Out with the Old, In with the... New Old...

(Tail light, not adjusted 100% Just gettin an idea ;) )

04-23-2011, 3:20 PM
Got my 2 dents Smoothed out, getting everything ready for paint. Filled 6 un needed holes on the rear fender. have been cleaning the frame up for a fresh coat of Black. Fender and Tank are going Gunmetal. Bars and headlight are done. working on the harness next, gonna clean it up A LOT. I have a Good Speedo, Tach, and the Bracket on the way. Been working on it after work after my son goes to sleep at night. lol

Couple pics:

04-29-2011, 2:57 PM
Got my New (to me) Gauges and bracket in, the wires straightened up (Mocked up, Gotta go back thru and Sodder and replace them), The Red Circle in the last picture is the last "Cluster" of wires i have to cut out. There is still plenty to do on it. I'm adding quick connects for my blinkers and tail lights, so they can be removed as needed.

Side Note: Zip Ties are for Mock Up. After I Replace and Sodder everything it'll all be heat shrunk.

Does anyone have a diagram handy they could post up?
Im missing a wire from my foot pedal Brake Sensor.

05-07-2011, 3:56 PM
Fixed the Wiring. Gotta pick up a pack of connectors for my tail light (quick release). so i can remove the tail light and fender as needed with out having to cut the wires. Everything is Soldered and Heat shrunk. Clear Zip ties are for mock up. still gotta pull it back apart to paint the frame.

05-11-2011, 11:47 PM
Little Bit of an Update... had the afternoon off so i played w/ the bike a bit. gotta finish up my seat mount and set my tank where i want it and shoot some holes. Frame should be ready for paint next week.

I'm Debating if i want the sissy bar or just rear fender mounts...

I made my spring mounts outta a stock honda spare tire lug wrench and 2 washers... lol. before.

05-13-2011, 12:13 AM
Sissy bar is still up in the air...

05-14-2011, 11:58 PM
And She's Alive! All Re Wired. Gotta finish my lights and next should be paint!

05-15-2011, 12:22 PM
 sooo many zip ties lol i like where this is going. sissy bar looks good. have you thought about one of those bitch seats with the suction cups and some removable foot pegs(maybe the little guy would like to go on a ride)

05-15-2011, 1:14 PM
Run the sissy bar. You'll be happy you did without realizing it until you stop to think "Where am I going to ties this road bag to?"

05-15-2011, 3:27 PM

Hahaha, zip ties are mostly for mock up. 1/2 of the black ones will remain, but it's all gonna come back off when I spray the frame so I left it all together.

Yes, Suction cup Pussy Pad and rear pegs are Def in the plans. My son loves Bikes, I cant wait till he's big enough to ride with me.

Run the sissy bar. You'll be happy you did without realizing it until you stop to think "Where am I going to ties this road bag to?"

I took a the picture with and the picture with out and put them together and just stared at them...I like the look also with the functionality, it is a big +. So I decided... Sissy bar is Staying!

I've been picking up the last of the connectors and bolts I needed, this last week. I should have her wires 100% and all mocked up today / tomorrow.

I gotta Start my Exhaust, I have my piping, but by the time I get off work it's been to late to cut piping.

Then disassembled and ready to paint this week. Its been cold and raining so I've been slacking.

05-15-2011, 3:56 PM
just a thought on the exhaust man cherry bombs are like 25 bucks at autozone, i did it and i have no regrets over it. food for thought, plus how many bike have straight pipes and how many have glasspacks ;)

05-15-2011, 8:11 PM
I've seen the whole cherry bomb thing, to bulky for me. I have some mandrel bent piping to run 2 into-> 1 on each side and possibly do something with some tips or some thing... the pipes that were on it when I got the bike were just spot welded and un even as hell... I'm trying to tuck them up nice and clean, since my bike is so low it'll help give me more room in turns to lean...

05-15-2011, 9:10 PM
hell yea man i know what you mean its kinda sketchy to scrape real hard in a turn my pops has an 81 shovelhead and the fucking forward controls drag that shits scary as all fuck he didnt tell me about it til i told him

05-16-2011, 10:37 PM
Got a little done today, I double today... Picked up some Wing Nuts for my Sissy and Played w/ the Exhaust. Going 2 ->1 on each side and going to a little bigger piping.

05-18-2011, 1:20 PM
Got the Headlight all sorted out.

Also Installed a New "Push 2 Start" hahaha...

05-19-2011, 12:12 AM
It's coming along very nicely. Keep up the good work.

05-20-2011, 4:02 PM
I Finished the left side 2 into 1 and piping all welded up, it had to be space away to clear the kickstand... Im gonna space out the right side (kicker side) out to match the spacing between to frame... i wanted it to be as close to even as possible. also tucked it in closer and up higher that the original one, so im happy!

05-20-2011, 9:40 PM
Couple more from earlier

I've been Busy with work and a few other things... I dropped my trans in my "toy car" put a new Throw out bearing in, replaced my axle (Again), and did a couple other little things, Threw a DVD player and sub woofer in my SUV, Buffed out my SUV, and I changed positions at work from Take out to Bartender (applebees), So I Haven't had much free time with the Bike. Been Working on her here and there...

I finished the Exhaust... for the most part. Gotta Grind down my welds and heat wrap it. (Yes im heat wrapping it!) lol
No More Blinkers
No More Front Brakes (the caliper was seized up when i bought her)
Fender is ready for clear
Tank needs a little more Luv
Frame almost Ready for a nice coat of satin Black
Eliminated the blinker wires from my harness

That's kinda were I'm at right now....

This is What the Color will look like after Clear (On the Tank and fender)

06-09-2011, 6:20 AM
This bike has come a long way since you first got it. Good work, and hard work.

Are you gonna run it with no front brake, or are you rebuilding the caliper?

06-09-2011, 10:36 AM
Ive been riding w no front brake since i got it. after get the bike up and ride-able again im gonna rebuild it...

06-09-2011, 10:55 AM
Digging the bike. Are you gonna leave the side panels?

06-09-2011, 11:42 AM
Never felt comfortable with back break only. I've heard bad stories about CB550 front brakes. Apparently they're useless when wet, which is why they have that goofy plastic cover on them. I guess drilling and slotting rotors wasn't really a big thing in the 70's?

06-09-2011, 1:10 PM
I'm Cutting the Side Panels down to about 1/2 the Size, But they are Staying for now.

Also, yea, ive heard the same thing about the front breaks sucking! hahaha.

Thank You all for the Compliments, I'm a Single Father Doing What i Can in my Spare time so things move Slowly Sometimes. \

06-09-2011, 3:25 PM
Bikes coming along man, and yea i can second the front brakes sucking on the cb550 lol. I have one on mine but I use the rear brake mostly and the front when extra stopping power is needed, I think having them cross drilled will help, theres a guy on the SOHC forum that does them for about 65 bucks i think, I'll have to look, he does wonderful work from what I've seen.

06-16-2011, 8:03 PM
Updates... I ended up not adding the extra clear to it. the frame is done (satin black) the tank is drying and everything else is pretty much mounted...

New Fuel Lines and Filters

I'm seriously lovin the pipes! The whole bike has a nice look to it but those pipes are definately sweet!

07-03-2011, 4:16 PM
Threw some drag bars on for now.

10-29-2011, 11:23 AM
Wow, its been to Long! So i Threw the drag bars on, clean'd her up a bit more, and Traded her.

Traded for a 4x4 1990 Dodge Ram w a Lot of Work done... But Needing Body work pretty bad!
My Finished Product

So i Worked on her, drove her, and.... TRADED her for Another Bike!

This is my New-ish 1995 Honda Shadow 600 :D

10-29-2011, 7:38 PM
looks like you have found your next build project. cant wait to see what you plan to do to this one.

10-29-2011, 7:58 PM
pretty sweet watching the build come together. what do you have in mind for that vlx? :cheersmate:

10-29-2011, 8:39 PM
Hey Danny, something looks oddly familiar about your bike... and the Applebee's in the picture... almost like I have been there before and seen the bike in person.

Good looking Shadow that you got now. If you haven't yet, you should check out the Magna that I almost traded you. :cheersmate:

10-30-2011, 11:18 PM
pretty sweet watching the build come together. what do you have in mind for that vlx? :cheersmate:

Well so far the blinkers, reflectors, stock plate mount and a few un needed things have been removed. It's "Hardtail'd" aka shock was removed and solid mount installed. shaved seats, and mini apes. some aftermarket grips and the baffles have been pulled out. License plate is zip tied on. (not me).

I Added a 78 CB Mirror to it, hahaha.

I'm gonna ride it out the rest of what i can this season.

~I have 2 Brand New Tires:
Rear - Dunlop elite G/T K491 (White Letter) 150/90-15
Front - Cheng Shin 100/90-19
~I have a Buddy local that Does Leather Work of sorts... I'm gonna Have him Wrap and work out some Seats for me.
~She has the "Dual Carb Set up" so i'm gonna pull the intake and run 2x 50mm 2" Filters unter the tank and clean up that area.
~Gonna Chop the Exhaust at the Mufflers and Build My Own... Thing.
~The Carbs Need a Good Cleaning and i figure if im gonna mess w them i might as well set it up w/ the New "My Style Exhaust", New filters, and re-jet em while im in there.

~I like the tank to be honest, Just not the big SHADOW across the side so a repaint is in the plans.
~Im gonna look into chopping the rear up and elimination of the fiberglass butt shield , hahaha. i want a nice... Fat... Round... Shorter.... Rear Fender to fit the tire nice and go w the big boy tank... But i wanna ride a passanger and gonna make a sissy bar for the ladies

Gonna Roll With it... We'll See how she ends up

12-26-2011, 9:28 PM
looking good
