View Full Version : My new Honda SL350...what to do? Tracker...yes!

Well, my Ironhead sporty chop is pretty much done, so it's time for a new build. I love all motorcycles, American, Brit, Jap, Euro...not brand specific at all. I just picked this little one off my local craigslist. It is a 72 Honda SL350. Super torque! Runs great, shitty brakes, and spongy suspension. I've done the chops, bobs, and cafes, so I'm thinking a quick street tracker.

Anyone ever messed with any machine like this? Specifically the SL350?

I will update post as progress permits...

some MX or tracker bars and a low profile seat would go a long way on that bike. I'm jealous...:p

Oh yeah, and you need to ditch that exhaust. So ugly. Just send it to me and I will throw it away for you...

This bike seems almost legend now. I have seen it on so many sites and it was just a simple little project like yours. hope this helps.

Send that fucker to me so I can make it into an ahrma racer...cl are killer race bikes, much much better than the cb's. Best thing to do is not fuck it up like most people do - lol serious!

CLEAN bike!! I'd ride that thing as is!! And IMO, keep that exhaust, it's fucking sweet!

Oh - oops, yeh keep that SL the way it is, maybe a better bar and run it clean with no dashboard.

Yeah, on the list is bars, more "streetable" tires (possibly dunlop K70's), fork brace in place of the fender, run a small tach right off the drive, pull the horn, new non-rusty chain, small mirror...all simple stuff. Ride it and work out the little bugs and take it from there.

Thanks for the above pics, very nice.

Yeah, the exhaust kicks ass. I want one for my bike... if that wasn't clear :-)

So far, I am noticing he exhaust is super restrictive. I love the high side pipes though. Going to tinker around with the pipes and carbs this weekend.

Pull that baffle out and drill a million holes, I call it bee hive baffle. If it can't come out you literally just cut the whole thing out and look for a baffle that you can slip in, something decent with a pipe and end. Drill more holes in the pipe and open the end the same way. This way your opening the exhaust up but still getting some decent compression for power.
Hondas as well most bikes are dogs without a decent baffle, running them open just creates a slower bike and issues in the future.

Terry,
from what I'm seeing, it is impossible to take out any of the baffling. The tips have spot welds, but I don't think drilling them out will help. The steel is stamped and pressed at the seam of the chambers. So, I think it is major surgery if i want to go that route. I can get to it from the backside where it wouldn't show. Just slice and weld back up. If I can get the guts out, I was thinking of using the guts out of VW pea-shooter tips, as they look like they will slide right in.
I can try to get some pics late tonight after I get off work.

Thoughts?

So, it's been about a month since I got the bike, and here is a little progress.

I got the TT seat from Omar's. The mufflers were too far gone with rust, so I hacked them and welded on the VW tips. New bars, levers, grips, Tomasselli throttle, little sealed floodlight battery, carb jets, new 520 o-ring chain and sprockets, wheel bearings, brakes, some IRC GP1 tires from another project (getting replaced with some Dunlop K70's this weekend.)

So, on the list of things to do still...

wiring this weekend, aforementioned tires, shocks, headlight, Uni-filters, frame clean-up and P/C, possibly a champion or trackmaster glass tank, and a zazzy paint job.

Here's the battery. 5ah, 12v, sealed, $27. I mounted it sideways under the seat, in a little sub-frame I welded up.

More to come (slowly)

Small update.

Weather has been raining constantly for a couple weeks, so with warm sunshine coming this week, I hurried up and got some work done in celebratory anticipation. I threw on my Dunlop Gold Seal K70's. I'm liking them quite a bit more, the IRC GP!'s were nice, but get a little sketchy in the rain and taking corners.

Decided to try out an even smaller battery, the sealed 1.3 aH, and it seems to be just enough to keep my headlight going. We will see if a battery tender is necessary every few days. I still have the 5aH battery in it's underseat tray, should the little guy leave me stranded.

Put some piggyback shocks on. I am loving the ride now. Got the rear in the air about 1" higher over stock. They are some inexpensive imports, but are great for the money.

Ditched my speedo and tach. Running one of the wireless bicycle jobs on there for now. Accurate, and legal. Also threw some way better "pods" on there. Dual layer UNI FILTERS.

And this week I got a complete 72 SL350 parts bike from some guy up in the hills. Didn't need it, but the price and coincidence was too good to pass up. So I can sell off all the little bits and pieces and have a spare engine to build up. Has great compression and spark, but I think the guy tried to run the bike with premix (that's what was in the gas tank, and the carbs are blue) Still trying to decide how much money to sink into the engine build, but a big bore kit might not be out of the question.

Next up, some kinda small side-by-side dual headlight set-up. Still have to clean off the rest of the tabs and unnecessary bits on the frame. My re-wiring is done, I just have to figure out which battery I am going to run and secure the main leads. I found an NOS fork brace, which should be here this week.

More to follow...

New 1.3 amp battery. Not the smallest, but pretty tiny.

And the hideous parts bike.

It's funny that I have been following this thread in interest since you started it and just realized it was me that bought the Clarke tank and stock seat from you off Ebay. Anyways, what I was wondering is what kind of shocks you ended up with for the rear. Good job with the build, mine is going a similar direction with the exhaust off a CL and dirt tracker bars.

That thing looks great!! Love the UNI filters, they really give it that tracker look.

Small world. I went with some cheap ones off ebay, from seller ' ophironline ' . If you search in their store under "clevis shocks" they will come up. I am very pleased with them, I thought they were going to suck.
