View Full Version : Post Your Custom Viragos

Just bought my first bike ('97 Yammy Virago) for $500.

I haven't seen many on here...POst 'em up! I hate the stock look with an unbridled passion and plan on going a lil crazy with this until I am comfortable riding and can afford a bigger, better chop-starting bike.

my 50 Virago 535 now sold
<a href="http://s279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/andy352299/?action=view&amp;current=S5003224.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/andy352299/S5003224.jpg" border="0" alt="xv535 1991"></a>

i also had flat bars fitted to this which made it much nicer to ride, the steering felt better and the seating positon felt better

Nice! Thanks guys. I'm looking to drop it 2" all around, solo seat, clip-ons or something (undecided). Lights, pipes, tank...all going to get re-done. Slowly planning now, so next month I can get dirty.

mine isnt "custom" yet but i have big plans for it. Have any of you guys had any luck adapting vstar parts to fit? I have been looking at the oil filter relocation kit and it looks like it should fit.

We will begin stripping the bike next of all stock crap--aim is minimal wiring, lights, etc. The ViragoTech forum doesn't have much in the way of extreme like CC does, but there is a good amount of information. Too late did I realize the Virago isn't too chop friendly.

Ah well...let's see how much frankenstein I can put in and take out of this one.

A generous friend gave the bike to me. It was sitting for a while, had to get it running again. But here's my work in progress.

I got an old 1983 virago 750 I am planning on making it into a supermoto/street fighter look. The older viragos just don't make very good looking bobbers I do like the newer viragos. My 83 has a monoshock so I think when done it will come out nice

dubs83virago
01-27-2011, 3:18 PM
that 750 is cool lookin. i was beginning to wonder where my handlebars came from, i guess they arent uncommon in smaller cc viragos? do you have that rocks in your starter case sound when you start it up from time to time? ive heard there are ways to fix this with shims and then ive heard shims arent the way to go.

langecars
01-27-2011, 6:07 PM
Actually I just took those bars off a dirt bike those don't come stock. I got two viragos that one is my junk parts bike I used it for mock up before I tear up my good one. Both of these motors have that starter issue there is a guy (you could find him on ebay) he machines the flywheel and starter gear for around $120 to fix those problems I am planning on getting it done to mine. If your going the bobber look I got extra parts including highway foot rest so you could stretch your legs out when cruising, I don't know what they call them.

dubs83virago
01-27-2011, 8:07 PM
i didnt even know they made them for viragos. can you send me a pic? and where would they mount?

Still loads of work to do (removing handlebar clutter, new rear shocks etc.) , but so far so good. Any thoughts or ideas?

It's pretty easy. I had to make a new mount for the front and "clearance" the underside at one spot with a hammer. The back bolts on in the stock location.

Was curious about some apes though and those Ive seen in here look dam good. Xmajasteex or Stubsy assuming you needed to extend cables and such did you build or buy?

I made my own seat hinge and welded a mount for it just behind where the tank bolts on.

First post... looking for ideas for my XV 535. So far the only thing I've done to the thing is raised the tank by about 2". I've been considering replacing the shocks with struts and the stock saddle with something like the Rich Phillips Snub Nose solo seat (seen here: http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/p2207/buy/m-c-parts/seats-amp-saddlebags/seats-amp-pillions/rich-phillips-black-snub-nose-leather-solo-seat/)

just built a solo seat with %100 repurposed items (flat broke, bored, and wanted a fun way to spend a day off).

that's the overall theme of the bike, a bobber build on a budget. what you see only ran me about $300, the rest was just time spent scrapping, salvaging, sanding, painting, and as much cheap paint and extra parts as i could get my facking hands on. this summer i can finally put a proper shop together, and plan on dropping a new set of straight pipes on it, a new fender, and reworking as much of the stock options as i have time to.

I've chopped more bikes than I can count, and hell, I can count to 4! The challenge was thrown out there by my dad, who said: "Bet you can't do this one without hacking the frame". One of the uglies frames ever put on a bike, try to make it look good without cutting anything on the frame itself? Hmm.. Challenge accepted!
So, I got my bike in March. She's a 1990 XV535. Fun little scoot, though it seriously lacks power. Finally, after 10 years of dreaming and having life kick me in the ass, I got my license in April. Rode the bike around stock for a full 2 trips. Raised the headlight, made some handlebars, painted, de-chromed, hid wiring etc. Most of this past summer, she looked like this:
http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab302/DownFIN/IMG_20160712_180151_zpskhb99yxa.jpg

I had some trouble with the under-the-seat-fuel-tank and had to pull my bike apart. Ripped out the tank, not gonna put it back in. It was constantly clogging the filter. Need to find a tank to set up on the backbone. Don't want to run 2 tanks.
Hey, I got distracted again and made new bars!

Then I thought, with the new bars and all, that I need to ditch the stock seat. It's kinda comfy, yeah, but it looks soooooo stupid. Especially with the tank under it gone, it looks so huge. Need to slim her down. I love king and queen seats, so...

I'll get the foam in myself, but I need to find a leather guy/gal who will do the leather work for me. I'll keep you updated. :p

Long time lurker, first time poster.

This is a 700 I had a number of years ago. Only had it a few months, but, it kind of planted a seed in my head about what I would do if I ever had another.

Fast forward to a couple of months ago. Found an 1100 cheap and snagged it. Here's where I'm at as of last weekend.

I think these bikes are underrated. Besides the starter BS, I like these scoots.

Hi all, this is my first post here, although I have been following various builds for a while. I don't have a lot of skills and tools, and I have learned many useful tips from here and started my mini build of my 1996 Virago XV750.

Bought it in stock form, and gradually using my hand tools (except a drill) and rattle lace paint, and I am riding this now. :o

Hardtailed a 535 few years ago. Single VM38-9 race carb, custom manifold, straight through pipes, made a tank from two fatboy tanks and tunnelled to suit the frame, got rid of the fake air cleaners and put the electrics in the frame where the original air cleaner was. Was running 16" apes on 4" risers then went to 10" with the same risers. Handled great and was quick off the lights.
