Just giving some pics of my current project. It's almost done, just have a few more things to do. Let me know what you think so far.

Stuff I've Done and Planning To Do

- Chopped and extended the frame using TC Bros Universal Hardtail Kit and Axle Plates.

- Made my own forward controls using 1/4" plating, 5/8 inch (i think its 5/8 maybe 7/8 u get the point) threaded rods, used the related nuts as foot pegs, made a cross brace with an ez curl bar cut in half, utilizing the curved section.

- Scored a Honda Rebel tank for free from my neighbor, I really think it fits the bike very well.

- Made an exhaust the was 4-2 and exited right under my right ass cheek, lol its in the process of being removed now, got tired of smelling like bike smoke and plus is was super low, 2.75" of clearance, Tennessee roads suck so that didn't work out to well. Going to cut them off right under the engine and mount old 60 model VW Bug tips to them, they have the same diameter and I've heard that it used to be a popular mod. This Bike Sounds AWESOME :)

- The engine runs smooth and after a little carb rebuilding, jetting, and cleaning it fired right up, runs very strong.

- Remove the complete wiring harness, signal lights, horn, signal buzzer, chain guard. Cut all wire to handle bar controls and removed the key switch, all is being remounted right between the seat and the tank, there will be a key switch, light switch, and an extra hole for a switch in case i decide to go with signals. Factory bar controls still remain just to hold the throttle tube and clutch lever, plus I like the look of the old stuff.

- Made a side axle mount Tag/Brake Light holder mount thingy or whatever u call it. Utilized the factory rear fender. Will be getting a pillion pad for the wife to sit there so for the struts I used 1/4" stock to support her, but she's lightweight so won't be a prob.

- Laced a 16" Harley Rim to the stock hub, sorta trued it lol I may get it professionally done later on, but it was more true than my front and rear factory rims, and at the speeds I go, not more than 50-60 (I never get on the interstate) I'll never notice it as I didn't with the factory shit. I'm loving the look.

- Tires: Rear = Shinko HD Dual White Stripe MT90-16, Front = Avon Speedmaster 3.0x19.

- The handle bars I scored from my neighbor as well, I think they're properly call superbike bars, though I maybe wrong.

- The seat I made myself, costed me about $30 bucks.

- I had no special tools or frame jigs or chopsaws or any fancy shit, I did all this with a 4 1/2 in Harbor Freight angle grinder, a Northern Tools 125 Volt Flux Core Welder ( which is a hell of a welder for the money), a basic magnetic level, and a 5 dollar angle finder, and the shit came out pretty damn straight.

About the bike. I got it from a former co worker, I did some body work and got his car primed, he gave me the bike for pay (costed me about $100 bucks). So money wise, I may have about $500 or a little more invested in this project, that includes the bike purchase lol.

I started this project in September of 2010 can't wait for it to warm up around here.

So anyway enough talk here's some pics, comments and suggestions are welcome.

My first seat try. Was very comfy and I liked it but when it would spring on a hard bump the back would bottom out and put a dent in my fender. That and my ass would never stay on the seat, it didn't have a high enough back.

Got the ideas for bolts as the footpegs from someone on the SOHC forum, I can't remember who but many thanks go to them.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TNnG73rz-9I/AAAAAAAAAbY/mRmG6_QXqQE/100_0625.JPG

The reason I always smelled like smoke after a ride, had to remove but mostly because of ground clearance, I made them with conduit pipe and some old exhaust pipe.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TNnG8eCDB3I/AAAAAAAAAbY/PyARwbBccW4/100_0626.JPG

Getting Closer Now, tank and fender was painted with Ace Rust Stop Satin Black it doesn't mess up if gas spills on it to like most spray can shit. Frame was painted with Rustoleum semi gloss. Engine was painted with VHT header paint, I'll be wrapping the exhaust when I get it done.

conduit as exhaust? Thats pretty sketchy to me

rider615
01-23-2011, 12:54 PM
Any explanation on why its sketchy, I've seen it done before which is why i used it, it ran very good after minor tuning . On the other hand maybe you misunderstood or may i didnt explain clearly enough, the whole header is not conduit, only the section that used to go from the original pegs (near the kickstart) back, it was what was available, it costed me like 10 bucks for everything. Anyway its gone now lol, thanks for the comment.

Cool scoot man, those little 550's are pretty sick. What did you mean by conduit? As in flexible exhaust tubing?

i would say using conduit for a ratty style build is fine.

The exhaust is neither here nor there to me but you made it look all squished in the front end. Your tail is so long and the front looks like you ran into something real hard. It looks unfinished (which it is I know) are you planning on stretching the front at all?

rider615

I didn't take it as bashing, I actually thought that you might mean it would do harm or something lol. That's why I asked for an explanation.

No, it's just solid metal piping you get from the hardware store.

Yea I was kind trying to go that route but I didn't want it completely rat style otherwise I wouldn't have even painted it. I have only a few hundred invested and I want to keep it that way.

Thanks for the comment Vinny, I actually would like to rake it but only slightly, I just haven't figured out what all I would need to do to keep the rake and trail acceptable, while keeping the cost down. The reason it's stretched so far in the rear is I'm about 6'4 260pds lol, big boy gotta have some room, you should have seen me ride it before I made the forward controls, it was painful to say the least.

Right on man, that's what I'm going to use considering my local exhaust shop is going to charge out the ass for some pipe alone.

I know what you mean the places I went to around here wanted to charge me more than what I paid for the bike. I got the conduit idea from a guy on youtube just search "cb550 drag pipes" it's a black cafe racer it sound awesome.

I really like your forward pegs, any more detailed pics of them? how did you run your shifter arm and brake arm? They look really good! I like the length of the bike. I'm 6'2, my frame is close to stock length, but i'd like to go to some F.Controls to stretch my legs out.

I picked up some mandrel bent 1.5" U bends for like $50 shipped. Thats what i'm using to Re-Do my exhaust. The straight sections of my tubes are about 12" long w/ a nice wide U bend. gonna curve Up with the rear of the frame and possibly turn Out to keep the smell of me ( i work in a restaurant, lol).

@ DualCamDan

For the forward controls, I pretty much bought a small piece of 1/4" plate from Lowes for the mounting area, i welded a 5/8 inch threaded rod to it. I made the shift and brake lever from some scrap metal I had lying around, the brace in between the mounts was and old ez curl bar that I cut up and stole the middle section, I had fun cutting it up because I just hate working out lmao, I'd rather be drinking beer.:D

The stuff below I got for the linkage, it came from McMaster Carr because it was hard finding the ball joint linkages around town, plus they have awesome service, and my item was there the next day, everything was about 25 bucks with shipping. Only thing sucks if you order from them they don't show the shipping cost, they just charge your card when they ship it, but its always been a reasonable price, especially since they shipped my items right out of Georgia.

Anyway the stuff for the linkage was (copied and pasted directly from my invoice)

2 - GRADE B7 ALLOY STEEL THREADED ROD, PLAIN FINISH, 5/16"-24 THREAD, 3' LENGTH
Part# 92580A108 (http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=92580A108)
Price - 6.65EA (2) = 13.30
4 - BALL JOINT LINKAGE, SHIELDED, 5/16"-24 STUD & SHANK THREAD SIZE
Part# 6058K42 (http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=6058K42)
Price - 3.93EA (4) = 15.72

Merchandise Amount: 29.02
Shipping Charge: 9.00
Invoice Total: $38.02
Payment Received: $(38.02)
Balance Due: $0.00

LOL hopefully that wasn't to much info :D:cool:

Ah yea here's the pics you wanted.

In the process of making an exhaust to lol. Those pieces that are covering the threaded rod are just some metal spacers that I picked up out of those little drawers with the miscellaneous parts in the bolts and washers section, at Lowes or your favorite Hardware store.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TVHLmJhxMzI/AAAAAAAAAjA/JTLXZjO08g0/s512/2011-02-08%2016.11.11.jpg

See that piece of metal tubing I have over that rod, the threaded rod is to soft to hold up to the pressure applied from braking, so I just went to lowes and bought a piece that would slip over it to keep it from bending, I'm gonna do it to the shifter side also, but so far it hasn't given me any probs. I think the piece was a few bucks.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TVHLm49m2sI/AAAAAAAAAjE/pyTNTG2YfJo/2011-02-08%2016.11.14.jpg

You can see that I just welded a piece of scrap metal to one of the spacers that I mentioned earlier and that's how I made the levers, they work great.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TVHLnkK5TKI/AAAAAAAAAjM/vfVC5opVTtc/2011-02-08%2016.11.39.jpg

I used the appropriate sized bolts for my pegs, got the idea from someone on the SOHC forum, between here and there you can find out just about any info you want for an ol honda, you should check it out if ya haven't already. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TVHLooWBSzI/AAAAAAAAAjQ/mP0aoNImDYM/2011-02-08%2016.11.53.jpg

Cut the stock brake arm down, and welded a piece in to hold the rod linkage.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_pnttGz4B98s/TVHLpa3JqfI/AAAAAAAAAjU/g1Gi6iqAWp4/2011-02-08%2016.11.26.jpg

They clear my front tire with about 1.5 to 2 inches, but like you I'm tall 6"3 260pds, so i put them as far forward as I could without causing damage to my tire or in the long run my ass.

Well thats it i guess, they ain't the prettiest, but I was going for cheap and simple, I accomplished that and I'm very happy with them to say the least, in all I was out of about 65 bucks if that plus beer money so figure 75 bucks ;). I could have bought some but it just made me feel better to make them myself. Go with whatever makes you happy, you don't have to do them exactly like I did get creative, and keep a brotha posted :cheersmate:.

Figure I'd drop an updated pic to, I got it on the road a couple of weekends ago when the temp got in the 60s now its 30 again. Hopefully it warms up in TN soon.

What happend to the seat!!!!!!! You had a kick ass leaf spring and metal pan seat on it! Then it disappeared!
I bobbed a 73 500 and if you decide to rake it, becareful, those pressed sheetmetal frame suck of strength and are about the worste you can find to rake. But it can be done. Make big gussets.

Dude I actually loved that seat, but I had to have it so far back to be comfortable that it would hit my fender on a hard bump, usually leaving out of my shitty driveway, on the road the spring never really got a chance to compress that much, that and the rise in the back was not high enough, my ass would always slide off the back. Thats why i put that seat on.

I was thinking about trying it again and maybe putting some kind of rubber stopper or cushion in between it and the frame but was kinda being lazy. Now thanks to you dammit, I'll be out in my shop tommorow trying to figure something out, thanks a lot :banghead::banghead: :D:D

Thanks for the info on the frame and the raking, I think im gonna pass, thats the 4th time I've heard that, besides I like it and don't really care for long front ends.

Summit Racing Carries them, 1.5" Mandrel Bent U's Ran me like $45 For 2x U bends The Straight Section is 12" long and the has a nice smooth even bend. No Crush. Mild Steel. I use the same piping (just different sizes) when i build Intercooler Piping and Down Pipes for my Turbo Kits.

Yea I might check into that later. But as of right now my neighbor gave some pipe from a flow master exhaust system, pretty thick to. The bends are that crushed crinkled like bend but hey, I can't complain it was all free. I'm going to do a 2 into 1 down each side angling outward about halfway the bike and possibly wrapped in white header wrap. I got one side done the other day, sucks though I had to get rid of the brace between my forward controls that curved inward, I'm gonna have to just put a straight brace, but oh well gotta give a little to get a little or give a lot to get a little . I'll post some pics soon. :cheersmate:

Hmmmm another question comes to mind as I was writing the previous post, are all the rear brakes on the CB550 shit for stopping or is it just mine??? The brake pads seem to have enough meat, maybe I'll measure later but the look pretty new. I don't know mine just seems kinda stiff and like you have to stand on the damn brake to stop it, but I usually use the front brake so no biggy, just wondering. Thoughts or advice anyone????

I don't know about the 550's but my 360t has a useless rear brake. It will help to slow down for a corner, but stoppin quick, forget it. Good thing mine still has the front disk.

Thanks for letting me know, thats what I kinda figured, mine is weird though it's like the arm thats attached to the rear brake plate is just to stiff, it doesn't move freely, but like i said I don't have one to compare to, my neighbor has a CM400 and a CB450 and both of the arms have a good inch of free movement, a small spring pulls it back with ease, me on the other hand I need a pretty strong spring to push the rod back and disengage the brake. I may take it apart tommorow and see, or I may say fck it as my front brake works great for me and my riding needs, I hardly ever go above 55 or 60 because I never get on the interstate and road speeds arount here are only about 45 max in the city and 55 max in the outskirts.

Some progress pics on the exhaust, made it a 4 into 2, it sounds fckin awesome, runs strong, and it's not as obnoxious as the short straight pipes, even my neighbor says its much quieter, and has a nice deep tone. I still have to clean up the welds, wrap the pipes with prolly white or black wrap, haven't decided yet. Make some mounts near the middle of the pipes to make them more stable, and mount my battery down, so don't give me shit about the bungees, they held it in place while I was riding lol. I was thinking of slash cutting the exhaust then I kinda said fuck it, cause it's what everybody else does so I guess I'll be fuckin different. Oh and the best thing the pipes were free got them from my neighbor, they're nice and thick, came off of a flowmaster exhaust that had been sitting outside for the last 5 years and they didn't have a speck of rust except on the welds. That keeps me within my budget, I think I'm still under 700 bucks, bike and all. Enjoy :cheersmate:

Much better than the original conduit setup you were running. Maybe it's just the angle of the pics, but it doesn't look like there's much room between the pipes and the ground.

Yea, its the angle of the pic, I can lean into a curve and almost hit the forward controls before the pipes, and i do like it much better than the conduit.

Figured I update a little, been working on making an electronics box the last couple of days and well I just about got it done. The electronics box or tube or can whatever you wanna call it was made from two aluminum cans, that were given to me by a neighbor, so once again I was able to make a little something out of a nothing, there's a whole can pictured in one of the photos below :D. I just love not having to buy shit. Well all that its lacking is to run the wire inside it and that's it, I was able to put my battery, rectifier, regulator, flasher relay(don't have flashers yet but hell I will soon), and a small tool pouch, if I could get a smaller battery I would be able to put a bigger tool pouch ... Anyways I'm liking it a lot , I'm going to leave it in its natural aluminum state as it seems to blend end with the engine, and well because I like the aluminum look. Enough with the reading look at the pics.

I might put my key switch in it also. I don't know yet, kinda like having it right between my crotch where i can reach it since I don't have a kill switch.

Well, its been a while i guess, been stumped at work, no time to post or ride :(... I have gotten some stuff done though so I figured I'd update a lil bit. Had to get rid of the electronics box I wanted to do above, my neighbor gave me a free battery, and it was to big for the box and I just can't pass up a free 50 dollar duralast battery, so out with that idea, made a smaller on and tucked it under the seat. Still riding the same ol seat, just a lil cushion, fuck the springs my ass absorbs most of the impact, I might get a gel pad or something, till then I just try to avoid the big potholes .

I put a new front end on it off of a 82 cb450t, I got the bike for free, of course it was in pieces but mostly everything was there, if you know somebody that needs parts lol hit me up. ;) The cb450t front end is taller and gives more ground clearance, a little more rake, my tire moved out about 2 inches (you can really see the difference in the last pic), and they are air adjustable :) makes for a nice smooth front end, and the brake caliper sits behind the fork instead of in front like the stock cb550, i think it looks cleaner, I had to space it with a big washer to make it line up correctly.

I got rid of the swing arm mount license plate/light holder, I don't know I just thought it was kinda gay and everybody else had one so fuck it, I tossed it. Welded a tag bracket to the downtube and put a light on each side, I love it, and the fuckers can definitely see me when I hit the brakes.

I need to sync my carbs, paint the exhaust, and figure out if I've got it timed right. I finally got it jetted, 115 mains, needle last slot from the bottom, I just ordered some drill bits from McMaster Carr and drill out my own jets since I had 3 smaller sets laying around.

I added a tool holder to the right side, it's a stick rod holder from Harbor Freight held on with hose clamps, 5 bucks, plus black spray paint, it was orange when i bought it, it works good as shit for holding tools or a 24 oz or maybe 2.:D

I kinda want to get one of those mini drums wheels from cycle x for the front but hell I don't want to pay 300 bucks lol and I don't know how well they work, finally got my rear brake figured out, it will lock the rear tire up now.

Added some cheap ass bar end mirrors from e-blow, I like them although I had to fix them after the first day, figures, but I can actually see behind me with these.

Should be able to get a ride tommorow, if the swarms of Cicada bugs here in Nashville allow for it, that or I need to get a helmet with a shield.

Edit:
I don't really like the way, my headlight ears look on the new front end, I've got to find some more, that look cleaner, any Ideas ????? The forks have no rust underneath the ears like my 550 forks did, so I'd like to show off more of the fork, plus those ears are just to big and look goofy from the front. Suggestions???? Comments????? Opinions ????? or just plain o Sarcasm is welcomed :)

Damn, anyway pics :):):):):)

Just got my new speedo in the mail :D, it's a Cateye Velo 5 bicycle computer, picked up for 18 bucks on ebay. Was a breeze to install and calibrate. I like it, though its small I can easily see it when riding, and it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Works well I got up to about 60 going around the block and it seems to work flawlessly, to speed on it is 185 which is far from what I'll be trying to reach. I'll try to get a better pic of how the sensor and magnet is mounted, I actually picked up some small rare earth magnets from radio shack and stuck them to the rotor, and placed the sensor on the fork.
