I checked the clearance. most of them had no clearance and some had about .002 inch clearance.
should i just replace the cams?

what should be my next step to correct the lack of clearance

what kind of bike? are yours adjustable? are you at TDC on the appropriate stroke when you are checking?

1980 gs850, dont know if they are adjustable. and idk what TDC is.

they are not adjustable. You have to change the shims on the top of the valve springs for thinner ones. But you need to make sure the piston is at top dead center with both valves completely closed to check the clearances. tons of info here for gs's www.thegsresources.com

You need that tool to compress the valve spring to remove the shim from the bucket.

Then there is the matter of properly measuring the gap, removing the shim, adding the gap to the shim thickness and then getting the correct shim. It can appear to be a daunting task, but it is possible.

And then you will always want to own a bike that has easy to adjust valves.
