I figured I would start this thread as a starting point for my 79' KZ1000 build. Currently I am working through any mechanical/electrical/fuel issues. Currently have cleaned up the carbs and had it running but need to order some jets and filters for it. Next on the agenda will be a pipe. After it is running and riding in its current gear I plan on tackling the wiring, and then on to the building aspect. I don't have any pictures to post at the moment, but the more I peck away at it the more this thread will be updated. I don't have a heated garage and it is -12 windchill at the moment so I am takin' it easy this week while I wait for some parts to come in. Will keep you all posted.

Hey dude! this thing is going to be KILLER! Ill see if I have any pics of it before we took the bags and crap off it. I think they are on my other laptop that crashed..... I think my add is still in the classifieds.
I got a 25k btu kerosene heater. WIll run all weekend off a gallon of fuel, and you can get it for 6 bucks a gallon at the Sinclair west of your place.

Thanks for posting a pic of it pre-tear down. I need to get my photo account set up so I can keep everyone posted once I start getting to work on it. Currently at a monetary stand still.

I don't miss that... There used to be this guy that rode a sick little KZ chop... Red with "build your own" on the tank... Prolly the coolest bike I'd seen around Cheyenne

Sometimes you just gotta buck up and ride in the cold. As long as there is no ice the cold can be tolerated.

I picked up some 11" shocks from a friend. I need to still do some modifications for a good fit, and for clearance reasons but they look pretty good.

It's awesome seeing people from Cheyenne on forums!

That KZ1000 is nice! I'm currently working on bobbing a KZ440 LTD.

That bike is actually a cb750 built and owned by a friend of mine.

Yeah if it wasn't -10 with a windchill of -40 right now, the bike building would be going a lot smoother.

I am considering doing a swingarm stretch on the 1000, possibly 4 inch stretch. Any one have any special tips, tricks, do's or don'ts as far as stretching kawasaki swingarms?

Its been a while since I posted in here. Made some decent progress. The pods are installed and carburetors adjusted accordingly. Fabbed up a makeshift seat for the time being. also rewired the entire bike with fresh wires and connectors and removed all the electrical from the bars. Picked up a set of MSR dirt bike bars as well. Finally got it registered and legal. Rode it to work last week, all went well except the front master cylinder building pressure on the way home. Go parts on the way to iron it out. In the midst of all this I was riding like a jackass in my driveway and jacked around and crashed in the gravel, no major damage except pride. More parts and building on the way.

Lookin' good man.
I would be interested in that stock front fender if your not going to use it.

It has been a while since posting. Had the bike in the riding stages, changed back to the stock shocks for a better ride and handling. I decided to do some maintenance after work one night and found that all of the exhaust camshaft camcap bolts had stripped causing the cam to lift and hit the valve cover. So the motor is out, in process of repairing head. No damage to motor. And have decided to paint the wheels, frame and what not while it is all apart. Pictures to follow.

A picture of the bike about 3 hours prior to being disassembled.
The pieces.
The motor.

The frame is currently on the rack at home, having had some extra tubing and brackets removed. Hoping to have it back to a rolling chassis sometime next week.

There are alot of KZ chops running around MMI. There is a lot of stuff, the good, the bad, and the ugly, that goes through MMI.

That's a good lookin' scoot for sure. Gonna go the soft tail route rather than go rigid. Like it sitting nice and high with a little bounce, for jumping off curbs and riding dumb :D

Good lookin scoot. Like how you kept the police theme going. I built my own wiring harness during the first go round but chose to scrap it when I tore the bike all down. I have a schematic all drawn up, and the wiring had everything working peachy keen, I just want to route it all a bit different and move the switches to the headlight bucket rather than the side cover I had. I had planned on starting paint tonight on frame, wheels, etc. but it snowed last night and all today and the garage is a bit too cold.

Took the day off from working on the KZ and went for a nice little ride through some farmland today on my Raider. It was a bit chilly but a good 100-miler overall. Managed to nab a photo while stopped at a Railroad Crossing.http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/g327/tommyletucker22/IMG_0630.jpg

"Currently at a monetary stand still."

4.5" angle grinders run about $30 for a chinese one....
I spent last saturday riding a KZ copbike and i think that if i get myself one the grinder would be the main thing I'd need to customize it..
that is if I could shave down-and narrow- the stock seat enough to lose an inch or so height and width

btw, I'd recycle the hardbags as truck boxes for my little Toyota....

And if you plan to get rid of the floorboards & FB brackets be sure et me know.
I don't see too many floorboards on cafe bikes here in CA, Wyo may be different ;-)
I am modding a Kawi VN at the moment and I'd love to do a KZ floorboard transplant.
Partly 'cause i like the logos, but mostly to get a little better ground clearance,
by welding the KZ brackets onto the top of the pegs that the VN brackets bolt onto.

That bike of yours is slimming down nicely, by the way.
An all that Kawi green sure shows some F.U. attitude!

I'm probably going to hang onto the floorboards. I have history with them, seeing at that I laid the bike down in my parents driveway and put a mounting bolt through my shin. At that point I made a real "connection" with the bike. And floorboards aren't hip on chops here either. Chops are pretty rare around here to begin with. But if I do pull em' off I will keep you in mind.

I modified the rear brake lever on mine in a similar way. Has a lovely spiral bend in it now.
I was joking about floorboards being hip..I like 'em because they're not hip.

On the subject of KZ's does anybody have any experience with these folks?

Must be buying up entire fleets of 'em at once.

Yea my brake pedal as a sweet bend. Gotta lift my foot all the way off the floorboard to use it. Never heard of the link you posted but I know that a lot of counties and cities will auction a whole bunch of stuff all at once. Maybe they are a "broker" for California State vehicles. I know the Cali State Troopers had a ton of kz1000's
