View Full Version : swapping front ends xs400/650

I have read here you can swap out the front ends on the xs400 and 650 by replacing the stems -- the 650 is longer -- by grinding out the weld and swapping the stems. The Fong Bros do this on some of their bikes. I plan on running a front drum and since I have the 400 front end this is my cheapest route.
So I started to grind but really cant tell how much to take off. So before I do anymore and ruin the tree, anyone ever done this before and be able to offer any hints on how to best do this. How far to grind or get em machined to remove the stems....

any help would be great.

grind it until you can see the seam all the way around ( the gap between the stem and the lower tree) then pound it out with a socket and a hammer. same process going back in only in reverse. pretty easy, it should end up pretty straight for you because of how tight it fits. then just weld it back together.
