I guess I've been lurking long enough so I figured why not start a build thread for my '91 Sporty. After seeing some of the crap (yeah, it's time to start calling it out) that's on here I figured maybe it's time to add to the "good" (and hopefully mine is good) pile. Seriously, take a step back and look at some of the sweet bikes that have had build threads on here (like BCM's Sportster) and then also look at some of the other crap (the 06 sporty thread that has pictures in separate threads and that's not taking into account the bike) (or the countless Nightster bolt on threads). I thought Chop Cult was supposed to be "self-regulating" or "group regulating"? So in the spirit of that one dude in Young Guns, "Regulators, mount up".

Now that that is out of the way, on with the build.

Let's flash back to this past summer. The air was warm and I just finished my '78 Yamaha SR500.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cVxc9LZhacu6NbmvwyaULaPndC5y7u3c4ZEoaHXPrKQ?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_lUqR37WMV3c/TKjdIbV8gKI/AAAAAAAAAM0/frpnwtBbZlI/s640/Muffed_img_1.jpg" height="383" width="640" /></a>
This bike is really awesome. Sound's good, plenty of power, and wasn't too expensive. But it was also my first semi-custom bike. I learned a lot of things and with this one being pretty much done I felt like I needed something new to work on. So I did what any red blooded American would do, dream about getting a Harley Davidson. After doing a little digging (and dealing with Craigslist scammers) I found a '91 Sportster.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/V_YOXPy9JaPADaqXD7PpG-j29x_QJ98NsIhJm4MOCkI?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_lUqR37WMV3c/TM9BwfTdDrI/AAAAAAAAAOA/34olqrIpvjA/s640/IMAG0172.jpg" height="383" width="640" /></a>
She was a majestic steed complete with Fat-BobŪ (or SportBob?) style tank, "Live To Ride" crap, chrome covers over everything, and a cheap fake leather toolbag. But it did have dice (no, not the magazine, actual dice) valve stem covers. My wife and I picked it up Oct. 30. And then after a few weekends, it was tore down.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/JkAUd4E2ZO3CxgGpUQXVjej29x_QJ98NsIhJm4MOCkI?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_lUqR37WMV3c/TN4NmBUeMpI/AAAAAAAAAOc/hKjFNpGuJV0/s640/IMAG0185-787323.jpg" height="383" width="640" /></a>
Sure more stuff would come off, but the big stuff is off and in a pile. Then it was time to start working on "the vision". I'm going to keep the rear shocks (that's not hardcore, bro), high mount (or at least higher than stock) mid-controls, paint the wheels black, small 2.2 gallon Sportster tank (this may change), rectangular headlight, maybe use the ribbed aluminum West Eagle fender, and short 7" apes or chumps or whatever the hell they're called. That's kind of the rough idea anyway. By this time, Christmas is closing in and I figured I would just browse through Lowbrow quick see if they had anything new. And lo and behold, they did. They had the 70 Moto Gentlemen's Bars. Dude. I thought that guy stopped making these. I'm not sure of the whole story but there they were, ready to add to cart. After talking to my wife, she decided that would be my Christmas present. And a bunch of other stuff from Lowbrow, 32 lbs worth. So I got the bars, the BenchMark Ombligo air cleaner, the BenchMark Dimple ignition cover, throttle, BenchMark breather bolts, and the Biltwell pipe kit. I would say that was a pretty good haul. The bars, breather bolts, and the ignition cover went on immediately. Everything is very nice, high quality stuff. Buying stuff is nice but sometimes things need to be made. And that is the case with the mid-controls. Since this bike came with forward controls, I wasn't too sure what the stock ones even looked like. So I did a little research. After looking at my saved photos, I decided I wanted to do some high mount controls. These probably aren't as high as some but they are higher than stock. I drew up the shape I wanted, cut it out of cardboard, mocked it up on the bike, then cut it out of 1/4" steel. I just finished the left side yesterday. And it's not completely done but for the most part it is.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ngLRSue_BXZv05MdPIJqd-j29x_QJ98NsIhJm4MOCkI?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_lUqR37WMV3c/TR54i-kS32I/AAAAAAAAAQ4/jw2ljDZBGBk/s640/IMAG0218-771429.jpg" height="383" width="640" /></a>
It flexed a little when I stood on it but really how many times will I be standing with all my weight on one side? I'm still going to add some holes (cause holes make everything cooler), and smooth out and round off the piece a little. I need to figure out the shifter also. It needs to be a little longer that the nub (it was part of the shifter linkage from the forward controls) that I have there now. Hopefully I can cut and weld a piece on to what I have now.

Holy shit, that's a long first post in a new thread. Stay tuned to see what happens next. . .

so far, all you really have are bolt ons. I will reserve judgement when I see the finished bike. Just make sure it kicks ass or calling people out will haunt you forever. The bike is a nice start though....

I'm a lil confused. You are slamming the "bolt on guys" yet, you have 35lbs of bolt ons (minus the exhaust kit, and that could be debated) to start...???

The rest better be pretty f-n spectacular.

...at least you started with a good base line.

Im subscribed, either the bike will be a ton of badassness or the lashing from everybody will be epic. I love when people set themselves up like this.....

Man, had to look at the peg photo for a while to figure it out. I thought you just bolted it through the clutch cover for a minute!

The SR looks good, hope the sporty comes out as nice.

I think your post is on point, if you don't think there is enough tech or good bike threads getting posted, do it yourself, and that's exactly what you are doing.

Thanks for all the responses. What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment. Oh well.

Here are a few more pictures of the peg mount. I'm sure there will be a little more work done to it (cutting and adding holes) but I'm waiting until I get another load of bolt ons to see how it looks.

If your going to set it up like most with some 10 or 11 inch shocks then the ride is going to be harsh so the first big bump you hit and stand up taking your weight off the seat that "L" shaped mid-mount you fabricated is going to bend, it isn't just your body weight you need to take into accout.

Hope your bike comes out better then your attitude, about everbody else bike! Everyone has there own ideas and opinions, I see some bikes looking cooler then others but, I dont bash them. Maybe we should shut down the factories and pro builders and just let you take over the bike building industry! Since you got the coolest bikes!

So this build thread died quickly. Oh well. Here is the finished product. There are still a few minor tweaks I need to do (redo rear brake lever, paint the exhaust pipes, and redo the shifter peg) but this is it. Thanks for the concern about the peg mount snapping. I shitcanned that style and mounted it differently. And sorry that I didn't update the thread back in June. Someone has to stir the pot every once in a while.

Good comeback ryanh, you took some licks, and came out of your corner swinging. I like your bikes. Hope you don't mind, I pinched the pix for my blog. It's helping me settle some arguments about paint trends.

The vibe I was going for with the paint was kind of a late 70's and 80's type of thing. I don't know if it's the next big thing or not but I dig it.
