2 days after I bought my gs650 I picked up a gs550 with a title for $100 to use a for parts. After I got my 650 done I wanted something to do over the winter so I started messing with the 550. Then I found another gs550 on C-list with a good motor and no title for $250. Here's where I am so far.

Dude, that thing is gonna look real nice. I have an 81 GS 550L kinda gonna do the same thing. I love you metal work man. Post more pics as you move along.
What year is yours? That tank shape is a lot nicer looking than mine.

Made a little progress. Got the sv650 front caliper mounted. Mounted the speedo but I'm not liking how high it sits. I can't mount it much lower because the cable against the back of the headlight. Also cleaned and rebuilt the carbs.http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll73/svcamaro/gs550/bikesanddog010-1.jpg

I haven't posted any updates in a while. I cleaned and painted the motor. Adjusted the valves and replaced every gasket, O ring, and seal. Also drilled the sprocket cover.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll73/svcamaro/gs550/newbike007.jpg
Stripped it down to Clean and paint everything. Mounted my ignition switch and rear master cylinder after I took everything apart.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll73/svcamaro/gs550/newbike005.jpg
Stripped the frame with a wire wheel, then primed and painted it. Started putting the frame back together and working on painting the tank and tail section.

Looking nice man! I really like petite tail end, as I'm not a fan of those big and chunky rears.

this is turning out real nice, are you rejetting the cabrs? if so what size? and what shocks are those in back? good luck, looking good

gs650
04-20-2011, 10:47 AM
The shocks are the stock ones for now My new ones should be here today. As far as jetting goes my carbs are different than yours. But I went 5 or 6 sizes up from stock. I plan on ordering a jet kit for it like I did on my 650. I just get tired of fucking with the carbs on and off all the time. If you find the right kit it's once and done

gs650

I made a new set of bars for it, finished the body work on the tank and tail, and put the new shocks on. Now I'm waiting on tires that are back ordered. I'm going over to my friends house this week to talk to him about the paint.

Thanks buddy. I saw that metal work on the seat and shat myself, so now I have a nasty-ass mess to clean up. Thanks.

That shit is titties! I'm building a '79 GS750 cafe (look for a thread soon) and was wondering what to do about the seat and tail light. Yours is lookin' mighty nice. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks for the comments guys. I finally got the tires and painted the wheels. should be mounting them up next week so I will at least have a roller. Also talked to my buddy about painting the tins and covering the seat. Hopefully we will be painting in a week or two.

Got the tires mounted and cleaned and painted all the small parts. Got the wheels back on so I finally can roll it around. Then my cousin came over later on and we put the motor back in. It's really starting to look like a bike again.

Sneak peak at the paint. It's black with and gold with some pearl over top.It turns dark blue in the sun. Pinstriper is supposed to outline the gold this week just don't know what color yet. Any input? I'm thinking something bright.http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll73/svcamaro/gs550/052911131001.jpg

what are those wheels off of?

gs650
06-04-2011, 9:13 PM
I think a 78?? gs1000. The front fits right on but for the rear you have swap the bearings from the 550 wheel and use the 550 sproket carrier.

Finished the wiring, put the exhaust on, put the carbs and air filters on. The filters hit the frame but I think they will be alright. Hopefully gonna have it running this week. Still need to finish the seat and decide which bars to use.

Nice looking bike man. Love the tail you fabbed up.

How did you lengthen the linkage for the rear master cylinder? I'm going to be running one that looks exactly the same. I'm thinking about just threading a piece of rod that makes up the difference and then using threaded hex stock to connect the two. Looks like you may have done something similar just using nuts, but can't quite tell.

gs650
07-06-2011, 10:44 AM
That's exactly what I did. The nuts you can see are just lock nuts to keep everything from spinning.

07-06-2011, 2:22 PM
what did you use for engine paint?

So did you get the jetting on the carbs all done? What did you end up using for main jets? Change anything else?

gs650
08-09-2011, 3:11 PM
Yeah I got the jetting right. Dynojet kit is the only way to go. I did the same thing on my 650. You will never get it perfect just changing main jets. But the mains are 150's

thegoodhumorman
08-09-2011, 6:23 PM
I assume the dynojet stage 3 for the 1982 katana 550?

What tyres are in your bike? What company does produce such tyres and what make is it?,

gs650

The tires are firestones from coker tire. 4.50x18 and 4.00x19

I just realized I never posted any pics of the bike completely done. The headgasket started leaking a lot of oil a couple weeks back so I'm in the process of putting another motor in it right now.

awesome bike man! really good work! couple questions though. Where did you get the exhaust wrap and how much did you use? and what did you use to paint the wheels with (like brand of paint) and did you sand blast them? thanks man check out my "build" if you have a chance. - Nick

I got the header wrap off of ebay. I had to buy two 30ft rolls but I have extra. The wheels are painted with engine paint from pep boys. I actually just put another motor in the bike over the weekend. Wanted to take more pics during the process but I always forget. Took the bad motor out friday night after work and swapped all the parts over to the new motor saturday.
New motor ready to go in.

Put the new motor in saturday night and started putting the bike back together. Had it running sunday. Took it out for a short ride tonight.

Can you walk us through your cleaning process on the carbs? I find the the small nooks and such to be impossible to clean with wire wheel/sandpaper/wire brush etc.

So cool man love this bike! thanks for the info on the wrap and wheel paint. i already bought some dupli color wheel paint for my wheels and plan on doing them black hub and spokes and then leting them cure and tape them off then do the rim in duplicolor's bronze wheel paint similar to the wrap color. cant wait to get it done! where are you from?

Thanks for the compliments guys. The carbs were disassembled and soaked in carb dip for a week each. Every couple days I would take them out and scrub some shit off of them and then put them back in the carb dip. The tops I just polished on my buffing wheel. I'm NW of philly.

Super nice build! Really impressive. How are those RFY shocks? Have you modified them ("renovate"-isch) or just put them on as you got them? Maybe I'll order a pair for my GS450.

I liked the other bars better.. but I just don't care for clubmans personally..
bike looks great.. I have a 79 gs550 in my garage that a friend just bought.. we are going through it off and on.. it'll be a stock rebuild since it's his first bike.

The shock are just the way they came. They work better then I thought they would. I changed the bars again. They are aftermarket ducati bars that I had on my sv650.

How did you secure the tank at the rear? It looks like you removed the stock mount from the frame. I'd love some details on how you mounted the tank.
