View Full Version : 1973 Ironhead Chop "Diablo Azul"

Well, I'm the proud new owner of this 1973 Ironhead chop. I traded the worry free world of push button starting on my '87 Sportster. It's not exactly in tip top shape...it has an issue with the kick starter. It seems to have a stripped gear in there somewhere. I'm excited/nervous about having this old scoot!

love the look of the bike man, it'll be a fun bike. I have a '72 I'm building right now and can't wait to get it on the road again. From what I can tell these bikes tend to generate love/hate relationships, I know I hate mine already haha but I'd never give it up!

I did trade straight up. The guy wanted electric start (he said he couldn't handle the kickstart). I'm pretty damn excited. I can't wait to figure out what's up with the kicker.

It is...I got it from a guy in Slyacauga that bought it from some dude near Lake Martin. Do you know anything about the bike? The bike was built by a guy in Florida. It was in BSH magazine.

Thanks man...I might be PM'ing you once I tear into this thing this weekend. I'm sure I will run into questions.

Here's one: Where did you order your kickstart gear from? I guess that's my first step!

I would look @ ebay first, im sure custom chrome has it as well. On my 73 i needed to make a clutch compressor tool, some shims to lock the basket, and I used a Harmonic balencer puller to get to the gear.

bearpaws1973
11-09-2010, 2:22 PM
You can score one from drag specialties, or debrix. I like debrix.com personally, I've gotten a few parts from them for this build. If you are closer to cali go that route (they ship a little slow). Yeah hit me up, the hardest part is removing the old rivets, after that it's a breeze.

bearpaws1973
11-09-2010, 2:26 PM
I used a gear puller to keep the plate down on the springs. I think looking back I could of done it with a wall and my knee instead. You will also need a 1 1/2 in socket. Get yourself a ironhead sporty manual (get the hd one) and study it a couple times, I have a haynes too and it is bogus.

ridemore16
11-12-2010, 12:59 PM
Thanks...got the HD manual on the way. Working on cleaning it up while I wait on the kickstart gear to get here.

thanks man! I'm hoping to have her running on Saturday. Waiting on another gear that was stripped. I replaced the kicker gear (it had only 2 teeth left) but the gear it mated to was stripped as well. I also installed some different headlights...I'll take pics Saturday hopefully.

Really diggin the bike man, good score! What kind of frame or hardtail is that if you know?

ridemore16
11-19-2010, 7:46 PM
Mike - No clue man. There are no brand names on the controls. Not sure on the frame either...it's an original front loop that has been raked, stretched and hardtailed.

bearpaws1973
11-22-2010, 7:52 AM
Wow! Never seen that before! Kick ass being able to ride her. I finished wiring mine up, but me and a buddy got together on sunday to brew beer. I should be out for a ride on the Turd tonight. How did the rest of the repair to the kicker gear go, and how many kicks to fire her up?

ridemore16
11-22-2010, 1:41 PM
that was pretty much it on the repair. she started on the 3rd kick. put about 50 miles on her before the license plate/taillight bracket broke off. I've got another bracket, but am waiting on a new taillight to get here. sucks because the weather is so good I was planning on hitting the road this week!!!

bearpaws1973
11-22-2010, 2:44 PM
Yeah I gave up on plates that attach to the axel, I just weld em on now. (I lost 2 onthe xs650) even with thick metal they seem to sheer off. I definately jealous! I hope mine fires up tonight on the 3 kick!

It's pretty cool man. My first bike was a 73 ironhead. I loved it. Shit fell off every ride. Top end redone. changing spark plugs all the time, but when she ran i was in heaven. I would like to find that bike again. I remember coming home and the taillight would always be dangling off the side of the bike. I would wake up the neighbors reving it up at 2:00am. all the time. :cheersmate:

Here is a little update on my bike. The boys at Garage Co. Customs got the clutch sorted out with new plates, new cable and new lever. I HAD to get a new seat (the strip of leather on a pan was not cutting it). I went with another Rich Phillips seat.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l32/ridemore16/DSC_0745.jpg

Got some new Biltwell lo drag bars and it makes all the difference in the world in comfort. I think they make the front end look a lot better without bulky risers.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l32/ridemore16/DSC_0744.jpg

Also installed the new FMA shorty velocity stack and it makes having a right side shift bike possible! No more jeans getting sucked into the carb!

Just had a leather dash cover. Had it made at the same time as the seat. It was one of the things on the list to change with that bike.

given any thought to getting the top motor mount that relocates the coil between the cylinders?? youll be amazed how something like that will clean up that whole area and make it look less cluttered. thats the only thing that jumped out at me when i first saw it. sweet bike and congrats on the quick fix to a totally fucked gear

first off, I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR BIKE! secondly, i am building a 73 now from scratch... first bike... could i get a favor and see some close ups on your left side brake setup ( i have 79 disc wheels) with forward controls. i dont know where im going to put the master cylinder.

once again, i LOVE your fuckin bike

the master cylinder is mounted to the lower frame rail behind the battery box. The push-rod is not the best set-up in the world but it works.

Thanks for the compliments...I'm stoked on this bike!

Replaced the sissy bar with a 7 metal west adjustable fender strut. One of Dan's brass fenders is in the near future. I think this looks way better than that J&P jobber. Also got my pushrod o-rings replaced so hopefully no more oil spewage!!!

Yeah, I've seen those lights on a bike in town. I figure everyone will switch to those style so I'm keeping the big boys to be different!!! As far as the bag goes, I made it myself and have almost 30 hours in it so I'm going to roll with it for a little while

Nice! I just replace the the main kicker shaft on my 77 over the weekend cuz the guy who had it before was 300 lbs and trying to kick a locked up motor. Yeah, so it was bent as shit. But yeah, it wasn't to bad, i think the worse part was trying to compress the clutch spring to get it back on. (77 has the two bigass springs).
