View Full Version : What rear shocks are on this bike?

Sorry for the crappy picture. I wasn't sure how to copy pictures from the Photodump (this Sportster is from the Photodump, Sportster section. I believe it's the 16th picture in the album).

Does anyone know what those rear shocks on the bike are? They look very skinny. Any info would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Those look like those odd strut-with-a-spring shock dealies. I want to say that they have them somewhere on the Dennis Kirk website, and I remember seeing them on an FXR in a fairly recent issue of American Iron, I think.

Note: Usually, I don't like to respond to a question thread unless I know EXACTLY what I'm talking about, but I know that I've seen these recently. I'll dig through my magazines and see if I can figure it out.

@CreepyJack13 - Thank you. I haven't seen that sort shock before and I'm interested in finding out what they are.

I looked at Dennis Kirk, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I did, however, find the issue of American Iron. It's from July '09, and the cover bike is what I was referring to. The bike isn't an FXR after all (I have FXR on the brain, sorry), but is a custom built bike by Donnie Smith. Unfortunately, neither the article nor the tech sheet in the article divulges the manufacturer's name, and Mr. Smith's website is a PITA to navigate.

Digging a little deeper into google, I did find that the original spring struts were made by Smith Bros. & Feltrow in the '60s, and I found a few photos of bikes with these shock strut things on the JJ. As an aside, I did remember them being the subject of discussion in a thread or two on the JJ a while back, but couldn't find the specific threads that I remember seeing. I wish my girlfriend was here. She's the "smart one" in our relationship.

No problem at all!! I should be working, but it's hot out.

Also, it looks like they're mounted upside down on that Sportster.

Ha!! I win!!!

Of course I searched for "Spring Struts" on the JJ, and this thread never came up:

Anyway, there you go. As Billdozer wrote in the JJ thread, "At least they're cheap."

Awesome! Thanks for finding me the info! For the life of me, I couldn't find anything about them. Too bad they're $500+.
If you're ever in the LBC let me know and I'll buy you a beer for your troubles.
