I am hoping this goes into the "there are no stupid questions category"

I am putting my 76 shovelhead motor back together and have a question. I have an hd service book but it is 78 1/2 and up

I have the cam spaced out with a .05 spacer. The cam gear sticks out .04 past the pinion gear.

The back of the cam gear is .025 from the tappet block, Is this too close? Is this normal?

What is going on here?

One has nothing to do with the other.... How much movement front to back does the cam have with the cover on?????

How about posting a pic of the cam and lifterblock...

Yes sir that's one great tool... It makes you wonder what kind of cam he's trying to use with that kind of lift?? With that kind of lift the lifter block is just the beginning of his problems...

That is nice tool to have.

It's not the lift I am talking about. The back of the cam gear is close to the front of the tappet block and I am just wondering how close it too close. I will see if I can look into the movement later.

It's a b grind

What about a pic... Just saying it's close isn't much help...

Thanks
I will take a pic later tonight when I get back home.

I can fit a .025 feeler gauge between the back of the cam gear and front of the lifter block.

Is that with all the correct shims in place??? Or with just the cam stuck in the hole??

That's not loaded right ...

Need to flip it over so the notch at the top of the thrust washer with ears faces the rear tappet block ...
