Wanting to built a cafe style bike, swingarm, shocks, clubmans, yadda, yadda. Have a couple looking at one is a 1981 Suzuki GS550 the other is a 1980 Yamaha 850 Special. Just wondering which would be a better bike to go with? Thanks

Why build one when you can buy a cobbled together spray-paint mobile for a slim 3,000 these days?

However if you must, stay away from the Yamaha or any other "custom" Japan factory cruiser from the 80's. The stepped frames don’t lend themselves easily to "CAFE"

The best manufactures to get parts from are in order: best to horrible.

Honda
Kawasaki
Suzuki
Yamaha (they are in a league of horrible of their own.

Thanks for the info, looking for just a cheap thrills ride. Found some for under $800 dollars. No Honda's tho. Couple of Kawi's. Have to keep looking unless anyone has some leads on some bikes.

Well I found a 1979 KZ400 that I am going to call on today. Can get it for around 500 bucks. This might be the platform for my cafe style bike, what do you guys think?

Seriously?
Do your homework, pick a bike you like or can afford and do it.
