View Full Version : Calling all XS650 PMA swaps.

So I'll start off by saying I had a less than pleasant experience with the stator that came with my XSCharge PMA. The original stator was soldered poorly where the windings join the stranded wire to go to the reg/rec. So poorly in fact that they came apart after an hour of riding and almost got me hit in traffic when my bike died. MikesXS was cool about it and sent me a new stator after showing them the poor quality. While installing the new stator, due to more poorly soldered wires, one of the leads broke again at the solder point. This thing was soldered to about a quarter inch of the stranded wire and it just snapped off when I was routing the wire on install. So my question is, Have others had issues with these stators as well?

Looking at these things you can tell they are junk. Barely any insulation on the windings. Poor solder jobs. Loose winding wires. They're just junk. I ordered an electrosport Esg730 and I'm hoping for better quality.

Second thought, the tech guy at MikesXS said they have never had any issues with customers complaining about the quality of the stators. I find this hard to believe as they appear to be straight garbage.

Should have went with one from Hugh's Handbuilt.

ive read that some of the stators in these kits had poor windings and solder points. I built my pma before everyone started selling the whole kit and used a stator from I believe it was a 80's Honda vf500, a stator plate for a Yamaha banshee and got the adaptor plate and regulator from hughs hand built. shoot hughs an email and ask about theirs they are stand up dudes! I believe he is the pioneer of this whole pma thing

Shitsnack, I am pretty sure Hugh's supplies the same stator as XSCharge. I could be wrong, but looking at the pictures it appears to be the exact same.

Metalheart, I have the stator plate from the XSCharge kit and ordered an electrosport ESG730 which is the same size as the shit stator XSCharge supplied. I'm gonna bolt it on that plate and let her rip.

Got my kit from mikes years ago, no problems to date

I hate to come off like a dick in this post, but I have to be honest so everyone knows the truth. All of these "kits" are made with chinese junk parts. This includes Hugh's. All these people did was find the appropriate sized stators and other parts, and sourced them from China. I can do the exact same thing through ebay. I put Hugh's PMA Kit on and had multiple stators fail, and had a regulator rectifier fail that fried an ignition. Hugh was not supportive of this at all, and actually bashed me on instagram claiming that it was all due to poor wire connections. This guy preaches "USA Made," but pawns off this chinese shit as good. The only way that this kit can be made more reliable is to use an adapter plate, than source the stator and regulator/rectifier off of a Japanese bike. Don't fall for the hype like I did and have 3 stators fail in a row, 1 of which was bad out of the box. Hugh doesn't even know the appropriate way to test his own stators.

Which Jap bike components are proven?

The originals

XS650 forum has a post of Hugh back in 2011 that goes through putting the kit together based around parts from the YFZ350 Banshee quad. It has some details of what specs should be for the stator. LINK. (http://www.xs650.com/threads/how-to-permanent-magnet-alternator-swap-also-known-as-the-banshee-swap.5536/)
This is directly from that post and I have not looked into verifying it personally.

Here is the list of sourced Stators that should work. I've never had to buy a new one for any reason, they work just fine used off of ebay/CL. I stole this list from another source, be sure to double check bolt patterns and that a Stator has 3 Yellow wires coming out of it (mine had 3 black, but it works just the same, you just need a 3 Phase Stator)

BTW the ES part numbers in parenthesis are references to Electrosport web site www.electrosport.com part numbers. mrriggs was using there tables to cross reference other models.

Sorry to say Electrosport also peddles chinese junk. Bought 2 rec/reg units from there, both melted after a few hours running. Stock items still work. Sent my regs in for examination and "repair" and now the fuckers wont answer my mails.

I know this thread is 2 years old but if you're still out there Keystone, how did that esg730 work out for you ? I have a bad xscharge stator too. I waited way too long to install it tho and it's out of warranty.( Mikesxs doesn't list a stator by itself but they DO have rotors for sale, wonder how that came about, leftovers from breaking up kits to replace bad stators maybe ?) I managed to get 375 miles out of the unit. SS rec also failed. Don't know which went first. Have a new mosfet rec/reg to install.
