Picked up this 1/3 of a bike pretty sure it's mostly original Santee stuff. I've done mostly Harleys up to this point rebuilt a few sets of carbs on Hondas and kawasaki but never done a chopper figure it's time to do a cool Honda chopper... gonna be in the market here soon for some Santee stuff any suggestions on keeping this thing pretty close to how it would have been in the 70's would be appreciated. parts for sale would also be appreciated currently looking for a motor ARD magneto and a Santee electric box. Thanks for checking it out

Nice is this one of CRFyous old bikes? ;)

Ha I doubt it

Motor carbs intake boots and a set of shitty pipes and the clamps have be scored.....we're burning on a cylinders now.....compression on all 4 cylinders is coming back at 90, not sure if that's good or not but it's consistent. I'll post photos tomorrow.

Alright pictures as promised. Haven't had a chance to put a little oil in the cylinders and try them again but as soon as I do I'll let you know what I come up with.

Ok guys so I redid my compression tests and did it the right way this time.....last time i only did like 3 kicks and i left the spark plugs in the other holes so it was difficult to kick over especially since its not in a bike or on a stand. I used the starter motor this time and got a brand new compression tester. #1 cylinder is 145 #2 150 #3 155 #4 140.

Also got my Suzuki sold so I have money now to get this thing moving. A buddy of mine has a pretty cool springer so im gonna scoop that up from him its gonna be a little tall for what i need but so ive got some deciding to do.

Well back at it, wrestling season is coming to a close and it's getting warmish out so onto the honda we go.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/20170214_202214_zpss6npbya3.jpg

Got the little heater out because it was a little cold, and got to working.

Took 1 photo but got a lot done, ordered neck bearing, picked up the front end from my buddy pete got the motor in, sissy bar sured up, seats mounted, sprocket aligned with the trans, carbs are apart and sitting in cleaning solution.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170214_224205_233_zpstbcz8hgl.jpg

He's got a hell of a lean but I dig it, no problems with ground clearance on this guy. Major things left to fabricate : magneto belt housing, top clamp for the springer and some bars.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170221_230443_655_zpsfxosjptm.jpg

Taillight plate mounts all finished up and ready for wiring.

Since the front end is so tall and about to get a little bit taller your feet wanna naturally go on top of the stator cover and points cover so I decided to put the controls up there

The peg gives me some grip but it was just a little to high for the break to work well so I'm gonna cut off the pedal and weld a plate with this little rubber pad on there.

shovelpan69
03-02-2017, 12:41 AM
We'll I'll start with the small stuff I finished.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/20170301_202504_zpskwmoor6q.jpg

Not putting a peg on this side because the stator cover does a fine job, so I bout some clear grip tape from a skateboard shop and put it on there the clutch pedal is on there too but it's a little hard to see.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170302_010150_427_zpscjkhulwj.jpg

Then it was on to the clutch this was the most difficult piece I've eve built trying to make everything fit and work how it should while not destroying the paint on this thing, but it's done and it works great.

jQ7dcDBhHfM

Then onto bars

The brace isn't welded in and there not bolted in in any way but once they are it's gonna be awesome. I really like the way they came out it's pretty much exactly what I was thinking and it only cost me 25 bucks at fastenal.

Finished welding the bars up. Drilled out the rockers to accept 11/16 bushings, and a 3/4 axel. Picked up the invader from my buddy Joe it had a broken spoke so I took the tire off and welded it on the inside and out then ground and sanded the inside smooth. Had a nice tire laying around so I pulled it off the rim and threw it on the new rim. Front street cycle supplied the grips (same grips I run on every bike I own). Got an electric box stuffed in there too. Super excited to have this thing off the lift and on the ground. It leans pretty hard and I'm not sure how well the kick stand is gonna work on anything but hard concrete, it's gonna blow right through dirt or hot asphalt. Might have to weld a big flat plate to the bottom of it.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/20170313_232722_zpso5uexxte.jpg

Picked up the box from JLeather thinking about filling it like this with just an on-off toggle switch. Ill drill two new holes to run the plug wires out of. Thought I had a good set of coils but upon further inspection they both had broken spark plug wires. If anyone's got a good set laying around they wanna sell let me know.

Luckily I've never had one that I've owned, sold and regretted, I fix up stock bikes and re sell me I try to hang onto anything cool that comes by me.

are you going to run the electrical in that little box? I may have some coils for you... i'll check in my honda parts bin as soon as the weather breaks. If i were you I would consider keeping coils and rectifier outside of the box, they are going to get hot

I believe I used to have a roller from the original owner as this one. SAME EXACT PAINT SCHEME. Same colors, molding was an amen savior frame set up for a smaller honda motor. Should have kept that bad boy. I do know it is still in KC MO. And ill have to look but I have copies of the bill of sale and original title and shit.

Fun stuff first, got the shifter arm all done and it works great could be a little more curvy for my likening but I don't have a torch so until I get it down to Joel's this is how it's gonna be

http://i.imgur.com/uLmi76t.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/QKBilox.jpg

I think I might call this bike the heim joint cuz I have 5 of them on here at this point. Any way since I went with 1" bars and I didn't have a throttle cable I figure I could use a Harley on bit the barrel didn't fit in the crabs so I had to use one of those universal throttle cables, had to cut the sheathing back so the barel could make it all the way around to the right place and then had to come up with a way to hold the cable in place.

http://i.imgur.com/OuvMAYs.jpg

Cut this off a set of Suzuki carbs I had and welded it to the top of ......whatever that's called.

http://i.imgur.com/qumQyeE.jpg

Throttle cable finished

On to the bad news I hadn't really looked into the exhaust at all until today and wondering what you guys think. The two outside ones are dry but the two inside are pretty wet and dirty. Joel says fuck it and I tend to agree so i guess I'm just wondering what would cause this bad seals? Blow by?

Wouldn't really worry about it until you get it going and the valves reseat themselves or if you need to replace them( if that's the problem) then the nice one are inexpensive and good quality. The other thing is with #2 and #3 cylinder, it may be due to the previous motor guy running pods and they are notorious for running really cold if you don't have them tuned right. Now that you have the breadbox on there I would just clean it up the best I could and then just run it now that all the carbs will have equal airflow to the cylinders

Every time I struggle with "oh should I buy a set or maybe get some brand new tubing" and I'm always like "an I'll save some money and just make them myself out of old pipes" then an entire bottle of argon, 4 cutting blades, amd 2 sanding disks later and I'm wishing I would have just had someone bend me up a set out if new pipe. But at any matter they're finished.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/dporter285/Mobile%20Uploads/20170319_211506_zpsmtnmk5mg.jpg

No bracing in this photo, I didn't take any photos of the bracket but it was late and I was tired and it looks like shit anyway. I welded a bolt facing upward on every pipe then made a slotted bracket for all those bolts to go through then put a nut on the Bolt holding it down tight to the bracket then bent up a 1/2" rod back to the passenger peg mount.

Small progress but progress none the less. Got the electrical box set up and got most of the wiring ready to be plugged in. Got this regulator rectifier from Joel and I think it's for a gold wing or something of that sort, couldn't figure out which wires goes to what so I just went ahead and ordered the solid state with the correct wire coloring.

Btw your new shop building looks very good!
For not getting your stuff stolen ,it could be a good solution to use some reinforcing steel behind the shop windows.
Don't know how bad it is in your area ,but better safe than sorry!

About your bike ,did you have lot of work to get it running like it does?
Or where the carbs from the same engine?
Cos it sounds and runs good when first started with the short exhaust pipes in your other ytube vid.

Yeah il probably have some sort of security system for sure, it's not a bad area at all but ya never know.

No I didn't have much work getting it running, the carbs that I got came off that motor, I pulled the carbs and soaked them in cleaning solution then set the air fuel mixture to 2 turns out, I think it's a little rich at this point but I'll readjust later. It sounds really good and it idles really nice but it takes a good 2 min of running with the choke on before it will idle on its own.

Got my first short distance trip in, rode down to my buddy Joel's house about an hour away and then cruised around while he took some photos. This thing is a blast to ride, got some kinks to work out but nothing to bad.
