Hey guys, bought a 2005 VLX600 3.5 years ago with roughly 2500 miles on it. First few years only mods were exhaust, velocity stack, new bars, and hardtail strut. oh and a box of parts i had hoped to install one day when i finally got to choppin.

A friend of mine welds for a living and used to teach at a welding school. Although I bought a MIG to learn on, he brought over his TIG/MIG and we got to choppin this last weekend.

This is my first project bike but I have been modifying cards for 15+ years so I am not a total noob to this stuff. Learning a lot as I go but having a a great time. Next up is to finish the battery tie down and electronics box, then mount the fender and seat, and bend up a sissy bar. I'll post pictures as I go. If you notice any issues come up that I may be missing, please feel free to point it out. Thanks!

got the sissy bar, battery box, and electronics tank finished up this weekend. Came up with one issue though, I have the Biltwell P-pad to match the solo seat but its going to look terrible when mounted to the rounded fender. Is it possible to reshape somehow?

Didn't get much done for a few weeks. One of my best friends wife's who was a great friend was killed in a motorcycle accident. It's been tough to get out to the garage to get into anything.

I did get everything painted (rattle can) this weekend and started wiring everything up. Got the bike started last night with no issues. Only thing left to do is assemble everything and wire up the tail/turn lights. Ive heard a lot of guys running the wire up the inside of the fender with the aluminum duct repair tape. Planning to give that a try. Here are some pics

Looks sick mate! The hardtailing gave it a tad more look since you dont have to use those ugly sidepanels anymore. How would the bike look like with the original suspension on but without the sidepanels, can you make it look as clean as a hardtail? Also what did you chop off of your ex-swinger cause it only shows the upper tubes cut on the images. Does the lower suspension linkage on the swinger bolt off or does all the "excess" pieces come off when cutting from the swingers upper tubes, a bit behind the cross on frame and the vertical tubes on frame which holds the passenger peg stands etc? Just asking because I'm thinking of getting one and if I decide to do so, I'm going to hardtail it.

Keep going man, you got a follower!

huviduc24
08-03-2016, 6:32 AM
I have seen a few that have made it look pretty clean with the strut on there. Just not really the look i was going for.

The cuts are pretty simple, they have been circled in red. the only one you cant see is the matching vertical tube on the other side. The odd piece in the middle that the strut bolts to was just cut as low as possible, capped off, and used to weld the all thread for bolting down the battery.

Cool, that's pretty much what I thought hardtailing would require. Helps a ton to have images like you have if I ever end up getting a VLX 600 and chopping it up, thanks a bunch. Next up would be the conversion from double to single backbone haha! May I ask how you removed the small "plates" covering up the frame behind the neck? You seem to have it open besides a coolant(?) filler in there, this bikes frame sure needs some fabbing if you want it to sit just perfect.

Eager to see more pics of the bike and everything you end up doing with it, keep us posted!

got it on the road for a test drive (around the neighborhood). Still have some kinks to work out

1. Right turn signal in the rear isnt working
2. Brake like doesnt change much when brake is pressed, thinking i have the brake and running like switched?
3. Throttle cable needs tightened
4. touch up a few spots of paint

Bike looks well sick now man! If you're still feeling the itch to tinker something I suggest you to get rid of as much stock silver/gray paint as you can. Polish the lower ends of your front end and maybe paint the front rotor's middle black while youre at it? Also a change of mirrors would do wonders! Keep us posted.

huviduc24
08-05-2016, 6:47 AM
thanks guys. I still have plenty of plans for the bike including ditching those mirrors, they are all kinda ugly though so i havent decided what i want to do yet. Also need to add some black accents and ditch some chrome so the fron/rear blend together a bit more. Seems like two halves of different bikes at the moment. Ill probably change the paint at some point too, just did the black for now so it doesnt rust to shit.

Installed some mini switches late in the summer and started work on mounting a peanut tank the other day. Currently have the bottom cut out and planning to start the fab work Thursday. Also planning to powder coat some front end parts shortly.

I'd also like to get rid of the speedo but don't want to be hassled in PA. Anyone get hassled when removing the speedo?

good job! it's the first time i see a spring seat looking good on a vlx.
for the speedo you can remove the stock one and use a small digital one for bikes, or it's the same of not running one for the cops?

please post as many pics as you can of the peanut mod, it's something i always wanted to do.

Thanks! the last picture it isn't actually mounted, just sitting there but looks pretty much the same when mounted. I will try to get pictures of how we do the tank. I've searched the internet high and low and only found one image of a tank modified for a VLX so ill be sure to post some for others. I might just rip the speedo off and say screw it, it hasnt been inspected in years anyway

how did you modify that tank to fit that double tube upper frame? I'm trying to think of ideas to do a different tank with out blowing a ton of money on a TJ brutal one first.

Still working on the tank but its mostly finished. The basic steps we are doing are as follows

1. Cut out the entire bottom and a square on the front and back to remove the tunnel
2. Cut and weld in sheet metal to replace the front and back
3. Drill and weld in site gauge if you want one
3. Cut bottom to fit, we made it a bit long and put a bend in it that follows the backbone so the tank appears to sit flush as if the backbone didn't have the bend in it
4. Drilled and welded bung on the bottom section between backbones
5. Mount however you see fit ( i am using a tab in the front and somesort of bracket underneath with a rubber bushing.)

hope that makes sense and ill post pictures once we are done....assuming it works out

Thanks Guys, i appreciate the feedback. Tank fab itself is actually finished and came out looking great. Due to where we mounted the bottom plate there was some (expected) warping so we pounded everything out pretty straight and im taking my first stab at body filler to smooth everything out. I will post some detailed pictures as soon as I get a coat of primer on it.

Thanks man, i really appreciate it! I do actually plan to do this at some point. The frame was repainted with a spray can so I can clean up the frame and respray whenever. I always have big plans then life gets in the way so I sprayed it so it didnt rust all to hell. I may go back and do that when i finish painting the tank one of these weekends

Finally painted the tank. Used rattle can paint from a local automotive paint supply store. My first attempt at a real paint job. The clear has a hardener in it so it should hopefully hold up to gas spills. Dont know shit about painting, the entire thing had a terrible orange peel once it cured, was super smooth when first painted. Had to wet sand and polish the shit out of it by hand

Thanks Man! I searched to the end of the internet and couldn't find any wheel covers currently still in production for the VLX600. I made some measurements and had Mooneyes custom cut them for me. Inside and outside need cut. To mount, I just drilled 3 holes in a perfect triangle, used some all thread and stainless acorn nuts.

Did a little work setting up a remote master cylinder....went with an 09 gold wing master cylinder because it had a sensor on it. Figured less wiring to the handlebars. May or my not use the sensor. Gonna have to rework a few things and obviously get hardware that isn’t from my bolt bucket. Seems like it should work though.

This is the plan for a mounting point at the moment. I don't have enough room under the tank and the only other optional spot is above the radiator where the horn is. Everything just seems to fit good here (cables wont be touching the motor once installed). Brake like will go up the fork and down the frame tube. Let me know if you see any potential issuess

quick question here guys, when i replace the levers I wont have a clutch switch anymore. I think i can rig one up using a switch on the bottom half of the cable (similar to rear brake setup).....but just so i understand correctly, all that switch does is stop me from starting the bike in gear while the kickstand is down right? If i loop it together it would allow me to start in gear and drop the bike like a dummy if i so desired?

RustInPeace
12-21-2017, 8:14 PM
Yup. If the bike is in first and you start it without holding down the clutch it'll lurch forward. You won't necessarily drop the bike though, but it can happen lol.

Killer bike, man. I might have to copy your sportbike mastercylinder setup. I was looking at Fabkevin's, but I don't want to pay $180 for something that simple.

Thanks man, that's what I thought....the brake sensor is like $5 bucks and I should be able to make a bracket to use it for the clutch pretty easy so I may throw it on there.

We will find out here shortly if this setup works and I can give you some details if you want. This is my first bike and complements mean a lot. Your bike is one of my favorites.

I guess what I meant to ask is did you fab the hardtail, or were the pieces bought prebent? It looks like you used the swingarm in there as well? I'm not familiar with these bikes. Ive built up older stuff, and they have a lot of aftermarket stuff.

Nope it was all straight tube, just made the cuts on the bends of the stock swing arm so it lined up. Added the cross bar and the vertical supports. Bottom of the swing arm stays stock.

New levers arrived, tapped them with 8mm for cable adjusters and installed. Everything works but need to make a few adjustments to one bracket. Dont mind the loose wiring, havent gotten to that yet. I did test the brake sensor though and it works as expected.

I'm currently using the old push throttle cable for the brake. I noticed it's thinner than the clutch cable. I imagine it's over engineering but do you think the throttle cable is strong enough for the brake?

It might be, but why risk it.l? Get a brake cable from a mini bike or something. It’s your brakes after all.

Build looks bitchin. Digging the whole thing.

Thanks man! Yeah I've been doing some reading and all brake and clutch cables are usually between 2mm - 3mm and the throttle is only 1.2-1.5 mm so it must be for a reason. I'll test the setup on my street with this one, if everything works well I think I'll get a custom one from motion pro so I can match my current cable size and not have to redo anything. Just need some warmer weather now.

Finally got around to mostly finishing the brake set up. Decided against ordering a custom cable because it was $110-$160, did a little research and found that the 99-07 clutch cable was a few inches longer and was thick enough for a brake. Ordered one on ebay for $20 with the clutch actuator arm, ground down the pin and pulled the clevis off to use it. Rebuilt the bracket to fit and threw in a spring to help push the cable back to starting position. Now I just need paint and a little welding....anyway, here it is.

thanks dude, really appreciate it!

the brake setup is going well, just busy with a lot of other things so its moving slow. I re-made the brackets and cleaned up the wiring. Everything is ready to get welded and painted in time for spring. There really inst any pressure on the bracket being welded to the frame to hold the master cylinder so I zip tied it up and was out for a ride the other day. Everything seemed to work just fine and didn't notice much of a difference over stock

Welded the master cylinder bracket to the frame and painted. Only thing left to do really is re-run the brake cable or buy a shorter one, replace reservoir with clear tubing, and paint smaller brackets black.

Had it out for a ride and didn't notice a difference in brake feel
