View Full Version : CB900C Street Tracker Build

So I have a homie that was trying to clear out his garage a couple of months ago and he showed me what kind of stuff he's clearing out. One major item is a 1980 CB900C. I tell him that thing would make a cool custom of some sort. He says I can have it for a couple hundred. I said no thanks, no time for a project. But the thing has been in the back of mind since then. Then another Homie shows me a link to a street tracker Dyna and I'm obsessed. Gotta have a bike that style, but I don't have giant bank to do that to my Dyna. So that CB comes back into my head, next thing you know I got this this junk in my garage:

Here's the Dyna that's inspiring me:

The plan is to first get this pile running, and mechanically sound. Get the electronics working. Then I'm gonna figure out how to get a sport bike front end on it. Then hike the back up a little on some good shocks. I dig the stock wheels, so I'm gonna powder coat them black, and put some sticky tires on them. Then I'm gonna get all the cosmetic bs done.
I actually think this oddball Honda with a 10 speed transmission and those four head pipes running out may even be cooler than the Dyna. Anyway, this will probably take me a couple of years to finish, but I'll keep this thread updated.

If I'm not mistaken you can mount GSXR forks on CB750's, which the 900 is a really big 750. Seen online shops offer to press the steering stems into GSXR trees too. Donno if that helps any but this is definitly different from your run of the mill cafes and bobbers everyone seems to want to do. Cant wait to see where it goes.

Gixxer front ends will fit, there's a 900C on the DOHC site a guy is doing with a complete front end from an 04 GSXR1000 but I'm not sure what it took to make it work. Maybe just changing the neck bearings? Looks nice, though.

Thanks, but it's not as nice as it looks. This is gonna be a long project. I've rebuilt the carbs already, but I have no idea what condition the engine is in. It has a ton of grease all over the engine to indicate that there were huge oil leaks before it was parked about 3 years ago. The suspension is shot, which is no big deal because I'm gonna put new shocks in the back and give it a new front end. I also have no idea what condition the electrical system is in. So before I can start making a sweet bike out of this thing, I have to do a ton of maintenance. Should be fairly straight forward though.

Can you tell where the oil leak(s) are coming from? Mine was leaking pretty bad from the little seal inside the tach drive, to the point that I'd get oil all over my pant leg and damn near the whole motor had a film of oil on it. It looked way worse than it really was and it's a pretty common spot for these engines to leak. Same for the seals on the valve cover bolts, too.

It's all over the engine, so without it running it's hard to tell. I'm working the brake issue this weekend, and hopefully I can get the carbs back on next week. Then I'll drop in a battery, get it started, and try to find the leak.
