View Full Version : XR250L Build

03-24-2016, 10:19 PM
I picked up a XR250L for a great price to build something fun for my woman (or is it just a second bike for me?). Not really sure what you'd call it: street tracker, tracker, brat, retro dirt bike? Doesn't really matter. Just want to make something cool for her that is light and easy to ride and won't cost a fortune to fix when she drops it. Here's what it looked like when I bought it (after I rode it through the mud and snow).

Here's the first mock up to get a general idea of where it is going.

She has decided she would like the bike to be all white with a brown seat so thats whats going to happen. The front fender is a sportster fender, the tank is a Honda CG125, the rear fender is a 6" flat fender. The current idea is to replace the current battery box with an ammo can and the headlight will be a hella 500ff driving light. Not sure if I want to pull the whole air box and switch to a pod filter or not. We will see.

Im going to need to cut out the subframe support here to make room for the lower seat hight that my lady requires

Here it is cut out

Cut the rear fender to length and mounted the tail light and this is how she sits now. the seat is just a temporary one till the real one shows up.

Today the speedo, headlight and new muffler came so hoping to get those on tomorrow and wrap up some of the other stuff.

Today I was able to get most of the battery box done, pull the air box and the stock muffler. I also pulled all the stock lighting and the stock speedo in prep for when the rest on my parts show up. I will admit I am not looking forward to trying to rewire this whole thing.

Wiring is the best part.

So I got a little more work done this past weekend.I decided to go ahead and pull the whole airbox and have a K&N pod filter heading my way in the mail. Got the xr only exhaust and the speedo on with a highly custom bracket. I might flip the bracket and bend the base back some for better visibility. Spent most of my time working on the battery box which was so exciting I neglected to take any photos. haha. then laid laid down some base paint that kinda gave me an idea of the final look and will hopefully keep the rust off. The turn signals for the rear I ordered were not at all what i wanted and only came with one so that got sent back. Still undecided on those. Heres some pics.

Coming along great. What kind of tank did you use?

Thanks. Its a CG125 tank I found on eBay. Came with silver Honda badges I'm gonna throw on when its done.

cool bike, I would call it a "scrambler", they are quite popular on sites like pipeburn, etc. Take a relatively modern dirt bike, make it look retro. I have a suzuki DR350 that I want to build similar (retro tank, fenders, seat,,,,). I also have a honda xl250 "dirt bobber" (hard tail), its a blast to ride, and super cheap to insure.

"Oh hey someone else is doing a xr250l build, oh wait it's my brother"

Gonna work on it more this weekend? Supposed to rain some. I'm almost done with my tank, I'm winning.

That fucker looks like it will be ready for battle.

Thanks everyone. Kinda stuck at this point waiting on some parts and some time to magically appear. As soon as I can I'll get back on this and finish it up. I can't wait to smash around on it.

heres the latest on the build. still not really close to being done but I'm hoping to at least get it to a ridable stage in the next week or so then finish it up a part at a time. still waiting on a headlight bracket for the hella light so the stock is what you see on there. the ammo can lid isn't painted cause i ran out of paint but I think i kinda like it. Let me know what you think.
